Oil & Gas Systems: Product Information

Vessel Internal Electrostatic Coalescer (VIEC)

Hamworthy is actively developing new and innovative products to make oil and water separation more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally safe. Our Vessel Internal Electrostatic Coalescer (VIEC ) is the natural choice to

The VIEC Concept

VIEC solves the problems often associated with emulsion and capacity limits in separators. It enhances the speed and efficiency of the separation process by forcing small water droplets to merge and form larger, faster sedimenting drops. Until the development of VIEC, electrostatic coalescer technology had been unavailable for use in inlet separators.

improve the separation and quality of produced oil and water. Customer advantages Increased ability to separate heavy oils and high viscosity oils Improved produced water quality Cost reduction in reduced heating requirements and less emulsion breaker consumption Improved process control Environmental advantages Less chemical consumption Less harmful emissions Improved efficiency of the produced water plant Less pollution through the produced water discharge Improved interface control reducing the risk of harmful discharges of oil in water Features Installed oil range API 12-50 Suitable for retrofit during a revision stop Only low voltage installation Fully insulated electrodes that withstand 100% water or gas

The VIEC Effect

Experience from several offshore installations, with oils ranging from 12-50 API, have shown that VIEC greatly improves both the oil and produced water quality. Extensive testing shows that oil in water in most cases is reduced and that the oil droplets in the water phase increase in size. This normally improves the performance of the downstream water treatment plant.

Increased production
By installing VIEC in the separator, the water droplets will coalesce and increase in size. According to Stokes law, the settling velocity will increase by the square of the droplet size, meaning that the required retention time for the oil and water separation will be dramatically reduced. This means that in many cases, in an existing separator, production can be increased by as much as 50%. In a new separator, the same effect may enable you to design a much smaller separator.
