Burrhus Frederic Skinner was born in a small town
called Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, on March 20, 1904
and died on August 18, 1990 after suffering from
leukemia at Cambridge Hospital, United States.

Burrhus Frederic Skinner, better known as B.F.

Skinner, was an American psychologist and behavioral
scientist. He is known for his major contributions in the
development of the theory of operant behavior, which
is a basic concept in behavioristic psychology.
In this theory, the main focus is on input in the form of
stimulus and output in the form of response.

According to Behavioristic theory, what happens between

the stimulus and response is considered less important to
pay attention to because it cannot be observed and
measured. What can be observed is only stimulus and
response. Therefore, everything provided by the teacher
(stimulus) and what is produced by students (response)
must be observable and measurable.
Reinforcement Extinction Generalization Discrimination

Reinforcement is a key
concept in Skinner's
theory which states
that the consequences Extinction can occur
of a behavior can when an action that is Discrimination can
strengthen or increase usually followed by Generalization can occur if someone

namely positive
reinforcement and
negative
reinforcement.
Positive reinforcement increases the frequency of
1 responses because it is followed by a supporting
stimulus (reward).

Negative reinforcement increases the frequency of the

2 response because the noxious (unpleasant) stimulus is
subsequently removed
Punishment is a result that reduces the possibility of certain behavior
occurring. Some responses can be thwarted by punishment.
According to Skinner, this punishment occurs when a response
weakens (its frequency decreases or even disappears) because the
unpleasant stimulus is still present.
The theory developed by Skinner certainly
has weaknesses and strengths, one of the
weaknesses is that Skinner's theory tends
to ignore mental and emotional aspects in
learning.
