American Superstitions

Name :
A superstition is a belief that has no real rational basis. Despite this many people in the past have believed some of them. even if you dont, you might have heard of some of these:

Breaking a mirror equals bad luck

If you break a mirror you may be told that you will now have seven years of bad luck. This superstition may have something to do with a medieval belief that mirrors are a reflection of the soul. By breaking a mirror you are harming the soul. In order to counter the bad luck you should take the broken mirror and bury it in the moonlight.

Knocking on wood twice will reverse bad luck

In some ancient cultures there was a belief that gods lived in trees. When people wanted to worship or ask these gods for anything they would tough the bark of the tree gently. When they had been granted their desire people would knock lightly on the bark of the tree. Some Christians also practice this as they may be saying thank you to Jesus who died on a cross which was made from wood.

Firday the 13th is a day of bad luck

When there is a Friday the 13th, many people think that the day is going to be bad. The number 13 itself is considered as unlucky. Many buildings do not even have a 13th floor. Although it is a theory many people believe that this may have to do with the fact that Judas was the 13th guest at the last supper. Jesus was crucified on a Friday. By putting both together it is considered as unlucky.

Black cats are bad luck

In the Middle Ages it was a common belief that witches kept black cats as companions and familiars. There was also a common belief that black cats can turn into witches or demons. This is the origin of this superstition. In many other countries though black cats are actually seen as good luck.
