BAROQUE ARCHITECTURE IN SPAIN

The Baroque was an artistic style which emerged in Italy at the en of the 16th century and
developed during the 17th and beggining of the 18th century and varied from country to
country.

In Catholic Countries: The Church Aimed to use art to streghten People faith.

In Protestant Countries: Religión was less influential.

Characteristics of BARROQUE ARCHITECTURE:

They aimed to reflect the sense of movement In the buildings

It hay curved features such as curves lines on façades, salomonic columns, recesses and
protusions and oval floor plans. Fragmented features such as split pediments. The buildings
were in open spaces and Decorative features such as organics motifs, garlands and medallions.

TYPES OF BUILDINGS:

Churches and other religious buildings

Palaces

Gardens and squares.

HOW IS IT IN SPAIN?

The main characteristics of this style in Spain are the use of humble materials, very simple plan
layout, but very dynamic and volumetric facades and altars. It was a more ornamental than
structural architecture

FAMOUS BUILDINGS IN SPAIN

The Royal Palace of Madrid was ordered to built in 1735-1764(Spanish: Palacio Real de Madrid)
is the official residence of the Spanish royal family at the city of Madrid, although now used
only for state ceremonies. The palace has 135,000 m2 of floor space and contains 3,418
rooms. It is the largest functioning royal palace and the largest by floor area in Europe (I dont
know why I cant put a photo)

The Cathedral Church of Saint Mary in Murcia (Spanish: Iglesia Catedral de Santa María en
Murcia), commonly called the Cathedral of Murcia, is a Catholic church in the city
of Murcia, Spain. It is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cartagena.(Departured
1931)

FAMOUS SCULPTORS IN SPAIN

Gregorio Fernández (Sarria, Lugo, April 1576 – Valladolid, January 22, 1636) was a Spanish
Baroque sculptor, the greatest exponent of the Castilian school of sculpture. Heir to the
expressiveness of Alonso Berruguete and Juan de Juni, he was able to combine these
influences with the classicism of Pompeyo Leoni and Juan de Arfe, so that his art
progressively freed itself from the prevailing Mannerism of his time until it became one of
the paradigms of the Baroque Spanish.

Alonso Cano Almansa (Granada, February 19, 1601-ibidem, September 3, 1667) was a
Spanish Baroque painter, sculptor and architect.
