Personal and Oral Hygiene

• Routine care usually provided before breakfast


• Other factors affect hygiene needs: perspiration, elimination,
vomiting, drainage, bed rest and activity
• Routine care includes cleaning incontinent clients, assisting with face
and hand washing, assisting with oral hygiene and combing hair
• Promote client independence
Providing Care at the Bedside

1. Wash hands.
2. Gather equipment (towel, face cloth, personal hygiene equipment).
3. Explain procedure and provide privacy. (introduce yourself)
4. Offer the bedpan/urinal/toilet.
5. Wash hands.
6. Check the bed brakes and lower bedrail nearest you. Never leave the
bedside with the rail down.
7. Provide oral hygiene.
8. Assist with shaving.
Providing Care at the Bedside

� 9. remove top linen and cover with bath blanket


� 10. Fill wash basin with water
� 11. Put client in fowlers position or assist to sit at bedside
� 12. help them undress
� 13. have client wash easy-to-reach body parts

Providing Care at the Bedside

17. Assist with washing face. (if need be)


– Wash around the eyes with water. Do not use soap. Start with far eye first. Wipe
from inner to outer part of eye with corner of mitt. Change to a clean part of mitt
with other eye.
– Inquire about soap on face.
18. Assist with hand washing, chest and back (if need be).
19. Assist with peri care and rectal care.
20. Clean garments, hair care, make bed
21. Raise side rails, return bed to the lowest position and clean up
Hair Care

• Ask client about grooming preferences


• Towel across shoulders or over pillowcase
• Ask client to remove eye wear
• Part hair into two sections, Start at scalp and brush to ends of hair
• Brush slowly
• Do not tug or pull
Washing Hair

 Usually done weekly in LTC facilities


 Sitting up, lying in bed (face cloth over eyes)
 Brush hair first. Use minimal shampoo and cream rinse
 Check to see if medicated shampoo is required (gloves)
 Always testing water temp (should be 40.5 degrees)
 Hand over forehead when rinsing (protect eyes)
 If hair is done in salon, protect with cap during baths
 Hair care in a bag
Shaving

• ALWAYS check care plan to make sure client can tolerate shaving
• Explain procedure
• Wash hands
• Gather equipment/Set up on over-bed table (do not pass razors between clients)
• Position client, towel over chest
• Wash face, do not dry
• Wet wash cloth, wring it out and apply to face for a few minutes (to
soften facial hair)
• Put on gloves
Shaving continue

 Apply shaving cream with shaving brush or hands


 Hold skin taut with one hand
 Shave in direction of hair growth (short strokes around chin and lips)
 Rinse razor often and shake off excess (never rinse an electronic razor
in water)
 Apply direct pressure to any bleeding areas
 Wash off remaining cream and dry with towel
 Aftershave lotion
Electric Razor

• Put on gloves
• Ensure face is dry
• Do not use shaving cream
• Hold skin taut with one hand
• Turn on razor
• Place razor over hair growth. Move in circular pattern.
• Wash hands
Post Procedure Actions

• Provide comfort and safety


• Place call bell within reach
• Return bed to lowest position and put up rails as per care plan
• Clean and return equipment
• Wipe off over-bed table
• Follow policy re discarding soiled lined
• Wash hands
• Report any nicks or bleeding
Application of Attends/brief

• Variety of incontinence products


• Choose appropriate size
• Position client in bed in supine position
• Place attends under client
• Apply attends and ensure secure fit to avoid leakage

Care of Clients Using Attends

• Try to avoid skin irritation and breakdown (can lead to infection)


• Be aware of the client’s feelings of vulnerability (odours,
embarrassment)
• Products vary in terms of ability to absorb
• Provide skin care and dry well
• Assess for redness or breakdown
Tub Baths –

• Do not leave weak or unsteady clients unattended in the tub or


shower
• Explain procedure
• Wash hands
• Collect equipment (wash cloths, towels, soap, clean garments,
grooming items, footwear, gloves)
• Ensure tub has been cleaned
• Place bath chair in position
• Assist client to chair
Tub Baths –

• Fill tub (ensure temp is approx 40.5)


• Help client undress
• Assist to tub and use grab bars if needed
• Assist with washing (no longer than 20min)
• Provide safety, comfort and privacy
• Clean tub as per policy (wearing gloves)
Complete Care

1. ALWAYS WASH HANDS.


2. Collect equipment.
3. Explain to client and provide privacy.
4. Toilet.
5.Begin with face, neck, arms, torso. Wash, rinse and dry. Apply
deodorant and lotion as needed.
6. Provide peri care (front to back), apply attends as needed.
7. Dress patient.
8. Hearing aids, glasses, dentures if worn.
9. Ensure client is safe and clean up.
