2 Understanding the demographic characteristics and life style of rural community

Dhodanni is a village in coonoor ,nilgiris district Tamil Nadu. Dhodanni is situated nearby to
villages ketti palada and Dhenallai. Coonoor is a famous hill station that is 17 kms from
Dhodanni ,Tamil Nadu ,India.It is probably the second most popular hill station in the
nilgiris.The hill station stands in the height of 1839 metres and known for its picnic spots and
picheresque surroundings.

The Nilgiris because of its natural charm and pleasant climate was a place of special attraction
for the Europeans. In 1818,Mr.Whish and Kinderley, who were assistants to the collector of
Coimbatore, discovered the place near Rengaswamy peak. The Name ‘Niligiris’ means Blue hills
(Neelam-Blue and Giri-Hill or Mountains) the first mention of this name has been found in the
Silappadikaram. There is a belief that the people living in the plains at the foot of the
hills ,should have given the name the name the Nilgiris ,in view of the violet blossoms of
“kurinji’ flower enveloping the hill ranges periodically. The earliest reference to the political
history of the Nilgiris, according to W.Francis relates to Ganga dynasty of mysore.

The Nilgiris is situated at an evaluation of 900 to 2636 meters above MSL. Its latitudinal and
longitudinal dimentions being 130KM (Lattitude :10-38WP11-49N) by 185KM (Longitude:76.0
E to 77.15 E).The Nilgiris is bounded on North by Karnataka state on the east by Coimbatore
District, South by Coimbatore District and kerala state and as the west by kerala state. In Nilgiris
District the topography is rolling and steep about 60% of the cultivable land falls under the
slopes ranging from 16 to 35%.

The Nilgiris Districts comprises of six Taluks viz udhagamandalam, kundah, coonoor, kotagiri
and Gudalur and pandalur. These taluks are divided into four panchayat union viz,
udhagamandalam, coonoor, Kotagiri and gudalur besides two municipalities, wellington
cantonment and Aruvankadu township, The District consist of 88 Revenue villages and 15
Revenue firkas. there are three revisional Divisional in the this district ,Udhagai, coonoor and
gudalur.there are 35 village panchayat and 11 town panchayat in this district.
Nilgiris is the one of the oldest mountain ranges,located at the tri-juction of Tamil Nadu, kerala
and Karnataka .Nilgiris is a part of the western Ghats ooty the “Queen of Hill station”. Coonoor
19 kms from ooty and Kothagiri 31 kms from ooty are the three Hill station

According to the 2011 census the nilgiris District had a population of 7,35,394 with a sex ratio of
1042 .females for every 1000 males much above the national average of 929 female 59.24% of
population lived in urban areas .A total of 66,799 people were under the age of six 33,643 males
and females.Nilgiris District ranked first in a comprehensive economic index ranking District in
the Tamil Nadu .Tea and Coffee plantation have been important to its economy.

At the time of 2011 census 48.55% of the population spoke tamil ,Malayalam 16.96% Badaga
16.65%,kannada 6.66% ,telugu 3.63%,urdu 1.59,Irula 1.07% and 0.95% Pania as their First
language .Tamil Nadu (OBC under central Government).The badagas of Nilgiris were original
treated as hill tribes .The Badagas were described as “primitive Tribe”by the British
Government .Badaga language is closely related to the Kannada language with heavy influence
from Tamil language .The Dravidian ethnic group existed here even before the 18th Centuary .the
Toda village is located 15 kilometers away from Ooty.

The Badagas are an ethno linguistic community living in Tamil Nadu , India .throughout the
district the Badagas live in nearly 400 villages ,called Hattis .The Badagas speak a language
called Badaga .The Badagas celebrating the festival of Hethe Habha. The Badagas are classified
as backward class in Tamil Nadu through constitutional order.

The 1901 census classified them as tribes and the 1911census denoted Badagas as Hindu animist
tribals having a tribal mother tonges .In 1913 ,they were classified as important primitive tribes
of southern India .The Badaganadu are a Brahmin community that mainly resides in
Karnataka .The Badaga OBC community population of around 2,50,000 peoples speaks the
Badaga Languages which is similar to kannada .Though the primary occupation of the Badagas
is aagriculture there are among their community schoolmasters,clerks,public works
contractors,Forest guards ,tailors gardeners.

Today except for some 3,000 - 4000 Christians ,The Badaga community consists of about
1,50,000 Hindus (2003) ,of whom a small minority are Lingayats . all use white cloth as dress
code ,use walking stick and leaf made umbrella. Woman wear a white cloth covering body
(Mundu), and white under cloth (Thundu) tied around her chest tightly wrapped square across
the breast and reaching to knees with two cloth – belts .Festival every year thousands of people
from the Badagas community in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu participate in the biggest
festival Hethai Amman the pay their respect to Goddess Hethai Amman

Language
Tamil is the official languages of udhagamandalam. Followed by Malayalam, badaga,
kannada, telugu and urudu languages .other smaller languages include toda,paniya, irula, kota,
and kurumba. Tulu is also spoken by a small section of the population.
