Solar Eclipses

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, blocking some
or all of the Sun’s light. This happens only during a New Moon, when the Sun, Moon and
Earth are aligned in a straight line or close to it. There are three types of solar eclipses: total,
annular and partial.

Penumbra

Total Solar Eclipse:

In a total solar eclipse, Corona Chromosphere
the Moon completely
obscures the Sun
and the solar corona
becomes visible. This
type of eclipse is only
visible from a specific
area on Earth where the
Moon's shadow falls.

Annular Solar Eclipse: An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is further away from
Earth and does not completely cover the Sun. This results in a ring-like appearance, with the
outer edges of the Sun visible as a ring or ‘annulus’.

Partial Solar Eclipse: In a partial solar eclipse, only a part of the Sun is obscured by the
Moon. This is visible from a larger geographic area than a total eclipse.

From left to right, the images below show a total solar eclipse, annular solar eclipse and a
partial solar eclipse.

How to see a Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse is very rare and many people look forward to seeing it when it occurs.
However, it is dangerous to look directly at the Sun because it can harm your eyes, and
possibly cause blindness. To observe an eclipse, people wear special ‘eclipse glasses’.
Sunglasses do not offer enough protection and should not be used to view an eclipse.
Another option is to create a solar viewer with paper, aluminium foil, glue and scissors.
Answer the following questions:
1. Define what is a solar eclipse.

2. Complete the table below with the three types of solar eclipse, their definitions and
draw a diagram to illustrate each type.

3. Colour and label the diagram below.

4. Solve each calculation and then find your answer in the key. This reveals the letter that
goes in the box above the calculation. Solve them all to reveal a message. The first one
has been done for you.
