STRATEGIES
The conon Gudeines for Watershed Derelopment provide for a unifom strategy in the implementation
of all area developnent prograrnmes. The main features of this strategy are 1. To increase in employment avenues.
Area dereiopment programmes to be implemented excusively on watershed basis. 2. To increase product1ve assets to lessen the effect of drought.
Progtarnme actirities to be confined to the identified watershed of about 500 hectares and to be executed on
projtct basis sparning a penod of four to ive years. 3. To increase the fertility of land and productivity of labour.
4. To introduce telief operations in terms of irtigation projects.
Watershed project to be, as far as possible, co-teminus with village boundary.

THE PROJECT
The Drought P'rone Arcas Program (DPAP) in Indiawas funded by both the central and state
governments, with contributions varying depending on thespecific project and location. The
duration of DPAP projects typically spanned several years, with periodic evaluations and
adjustments.

" Initiallr, DPAP operated in 627 blocks across 96 disteicts in 13 states untill 1994 95.
" Followung reconmcndationsby the Prof CHHanumanntha RaoCommittee, the programme expanded toincclude 384 new blocks and
trausterred some blocks trom DPAP to nother programme called DROUGHT DEVELOPMENTPROGRAMME (DDP).
Now, DPAP covers 972 blocksin 183 districts acrOSs 16 states.
