A When I came back to the flat I was sharing with Mark, a college friend, it was already past midnight. I had spent the
weekend in my hometown with my parents and I was feeling quite relaxed. I quietly unlocked the door and went into the
flat. (1)___ I nearly fell over Mark’s sports bag, which he’d carelessly left in the middle of the hall. His shoes and tennis stuff
were lying all around the floor. I took off my coat and went to the kitchen to have some tea. It was the same old story

Angry, I dashed to the living room, which I’d carefully tidied on Friday before leaving the place. The awful smell of cigarette

wasn’t any better than the kitchen. (3)___ He hadn’t even emptied the ashtray, which was full of cigarette ends and gave
off a terrible smell.
