MODULE 8: PONDERING CAUSE AND EFFECT

Hello Learners! Developing cause and effect is very

important because it will help you understand characters’
behaviour. This will also help you develop your
communication and thinking skills.

LEARNING TARGETS
In this module, you are expected to identify cause
and effect in the stories read or listened to

VOCABULARY BUILDER

Cause
A cause is something that makes something else
happen. It is the reason for the effect.

Effect
An effect is the result of the cause. It happens
because of the cause.

WARMING UP
Directions: Match each effect to its cause. Write your
answer inside the box.
EFFECT

1
CAUSE EFFECT

Stacy tickled Philip’s nose.

Jenny called Clayton.

Anne threw a ball to Lucky.

Clayton hit a home run.

It started to get dark outside.

The elevator broke.

LEARNING ABOUT IT

Cause and effect are connected events.

A cause is the first event and the effect is
the second event, or resulting action, that
happens after the cause.

Cause answers the question, “Why did

this happen?”

Effect answers the question, “What

happened?”

2
CAUSE EFFECT

It rained. The road is wet.

It fell in the mud. My clothes are dirty.

You can check whether a cause and effect go

together. Put them together with the word “so”:
It rained, so the road is wet.

You can also use the word “because”. With

because, the effect goes first in the sentence.
The road is wet because it rained.

Try this out!

Write these effects after its cause.
His hands were cold.
He got dizzy.
He had to pay a fee.

effect of the boy’s actions.
The Boy Who Cried Wolf
By Aesop

Once upon a time, in a beautiful village near lush

rolling hills, there was a boy who watched over the village’s
sheep. Being alone up in the hills was very boring. To liven
up his day, the boy thought it would be fun to scare the
villagers and scream, “Wolf, wolf!” The villagers grabbed
whatever they could, and ran up the hill to scare off the
wolf.
When they reached the top, they realized they had
been tricked by the mischievous boy. He laughed and
laughed until the villagers angrily walked back down the
hill. Even the sheep were not amused. The boy continued
to call wolf, and the villagers warned him that the next time
they would no longer believe him. The boy shrugged off the
warning and laid down for a nap.
One lazy afternoon, the boy heard a terrible sound.
Before he could even prepare himself, a wolf appeared
right before him, and was chasing all the village’s sheep!
The boy screamed, “Wolf, wolf!”, but having lied so many
times, the people of the village just ignored him. With no
one to help him fend off the wolf, the sheep all ran away,
and the boy was left crying on the hill.
