September Hat
________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Sizes: Fits head circumference of 54–56 (56–58) cm [21¼–22 (22–22¾) inches]
Gauge: 12 sts x 38 rows = 10 x 10 cm [4 x 4 inches] in brioche stitch with one strand of each yarn on 4,5 mm
[US7] needles, measured while lightly pushing the swatch out to the sides (slightly stretched)
Needles: Circular needles: 4.5 mm [US7] / 40 cm [16 inches]
Double-pointed needles: 4.5 mm [US7] (unless the Magic Loop technique is used)
Materials: 50 (50) g Sunday by Sandnes Garn (50 g = 235 m [257 yds]) held together with 50 (50) g Tynn Silk
Mohair by Sandnes Garn (25 g = 212 m [232 yds]), optionally a thin elastic thread (knitting-in elastic).
Note: one strand of Sunday and two strands of Tynn Silk Mohair are held together throughout the pattern
and the given yardage amounts are the total yardage needed.
PATTERN
The September Hat is worked from the brim to the top in the round on circular needles in brioche stitch.
Stitches are cast on using the Italian cast-on method to create a neat edge. The crown is shaped with
decreases. Note that the hat is worked holding one strand of Sunday and two strands of Tynn Silk
Mohair throughout (you can substitute for another yarn that gives the correct gauge).
When working brioche stitch in the round on circular needles, the brioche stitches will alternate every
other round, so they are worked in brioche-knit every other round, while the opposite rounds are worked
in brioche-purl. Videos of the techniques used in the pattern can be found on www.petiteknit.com.
With the correct gauge, the hat is 23 (23) cm [9 (9) inches] wide, when lying flat and lightly pressed to
the sides.
Hat
Cast on 56 (56) sts on 4.5 mm [US7] / 40 cm [16 inches] circular needles using the Italian cast-on
method. Do not join to knit in the round just yet. To stabilize the sts, work 2 rows back and forth where
the knit sts are knitted and the purl sts are slipped purl-wise with the yarn held at the front (a video of
this can be found on www.petiteknit.com). I recommend working these 2 rows tightly, especially if you
are knitting the smaller size.
2
Join to knit in the round on the circular needles, making sure that the cast on edge is not twisted. The
first stitch of the round is a knit stitch. Place a marker for the beginning of the round.
Decreases
Now work decreases to shape the crown of the hat. Change to 4.5 mm [US7] double-pointed needles
(or switch to using the Magic Loop technique) when there are no longer enough sts to reach all the
circumference of the circular needle comfortably.
Divide the work into sections by placing a stitch marker every 14th (14th) stitch all the way around (a
total of 4 stitch markers are placed).
Work decreases on a brioche knit (brk) round (i.e. a Round 2). Work as follows:
*R dec, work in brioche as established to 4 sts before marker, L dec, sl1yo*
Work from * to * to end of round (i.e. a total of 4 times). The number of sts has been decreased by 16
sts and there are 40 (40) sts left on the needle.
Work a round of decreases as described above. There are now 24 (24) sts left on the needle.
Break the yarn and pull the end through the remaining 12 (12) sts on the needles. Tighten and weave
in the end securely on the WS of the hat.
3
Folded brim
The cast-on edge of the hat can be folded up to form a 10-12 (10-12) cm [4-4¾ (4-4¾) inches] wide
brim.
Brioche stitch stretches with wear and over time, so I recommend threading a thin elastic thread (it is
also called knitting-in elastic and it is as thin as sewing thread and transparent) through the Italian cast-
on edge all the way around, and around the point where the brim folds over (see video on
www.petiteknit.com) to help the hat keep its shape with wear.
