Note:
If you use paper other than the specified paper, the paper detector may not work correctly.

Cover open detector

This is a microswitch that monitors the printer cover. When the detector senses a cover open
during printing, the ERROR LED flashes, and printing stops. When the detector senses a cover
open while the printer is in standby mode, the printer goes offline. The printer recovers when
the cover is closed.

Note:
Whether the cover is open or not does not affect the status reported by the paper detector.

Chapter 2
Handling
This chapter describes handling and packing for the TM‐T20.

Safety Precautions on Handling

CAUTION:
❏ Do not pull the paper out when the roll paper cover is closed.

❏ Because the thermal elements of the print head and driver IC are easy to break, do
not touch them with any metal objects.

❏ Since the areas around the print head become very hot during and just after
printing, do not touch them.

❏ Do not open the roll paper cover when printing, or the mechanism may get
damaged.

❏ Do not touch the surface of the print head because dust and dirt can stick to the
surface and damage the elements.

❏ Thermal paper containing Na+, K+, and Cl– ions can harm the print head thermal
elements. Therefore, be sure to use only the specified paper.

❏ Label paper cannot be used.

Chapter 3
Troubleshooting
This chapter explains how to repair and handle problems that may occur with the TM‐T20.

Deal with any problems and perform repairs according to the repair processes described here.

Repair Process

Outline of Repair
Before preparing the product, confirm the user’s environment (the printer settings). After repair,
confirm that you have restored these same settings in the product, and then return it to the user.
When you repair the product, follow the repair flowchart below.

Repair Flow
Check the printer status before and after repair, as shown in the following flowchart. The
operations to confirm the current status of the printer are explained in the following sections. If
problems are found, follow the instructions in “Diagnosing Failures” to troubleshoot based on
the symptom, change parts, or perform adjustments and settings, if necessary.

Chapter 4
Disassembly and Assembly
This chapter describes assembly and disassembly procedures for the TM‐T20.

Notes for Disassembly and Assembly

Always observe the following precautions when disassembling and assembling the product.

CAUTION:
❏ Always remove the power supply unit from the printer before working. Power flows to
the internal circuit boards even if you turn the printer off with the power switch. You
may damage the printer if you work while the power supply is still attached.

❏ Remove all peripheral equipment connected to the printer before starting work.

❏ Connect or disconnect the flexible flat cable (FFC) straight into or out of the
connector to prevent problems that may result in a malfunction.

❏ Wear a grounded wrist band when handling the internal circuit boards to prevent
damage from static electricity.

❏ When removing an internal circuit board, place it on an anti-static rubber sheet or

similar surface to prevent damage from static electricity.

❏ Be careful not to subject the circuit boards to shock or vibration, because this may
damage them.

❏ To prevent contamination that may result in a malfunction, do not touch the circuit
board or cable terminals with your hands.

❏ Hold circuit boards only by their edges.

❏ Do not touch the connector pins of the FFC.

Quickest Disassembly Route

The following flowcharts show the quickest route for disassembling each major component.

Remove all the parts/units on the way to the target part.

For assembly, reverse the steps.

“Assembly Points” headings indicate points where you need to pay special attention when
assembling. Be sure to follow the instructions given in the places where adjustment is required.

Removing the Thermal Print Head Assembly

CAUTION
❏ Note that the thermal head becomes very hot during operation. Be sure to wait
about 10 minutes after turning printer power off before beginning the following
procedure.

❏ When performing this procedure, be sure to use a grounded wrist band or take other
measures to protect against electrostatic charge. Failure to do so can result in
damage to the thermal head.

❏ Never touch the thermal element (the area that looks like it is marked with a thin
black line) of the thermal head with your hands. Doing so can damage the heating
element.

❏ Whenever there is dirt or any other foreign matter on the thermal head, clean it off
with a cotton swab moistened with alcohol.

Adjustment / Check
This chapter describes the adjustment items and the adjusting and checking procedures.

Note:
Before carrying out an adjustment, refer to “Adjustments for Each Part/Unit” on page 5‐2 and check
the required adjustment items and their procedures.

During the adjustment, make sure to check and follow the cautions indicated in the descriptions of each
adjustment item. If failed to do so, it may result in errors or damages in the product operations or
functions.

How to Carry Out the Adjustments

When repairing/removing a part or unit listed in “Parts/Units for which Adjustments are
Needed” on page 5‐2, make sure to refer to “Adjustments for Each Part/Unit” on page 5‐2 and
carry out all the necessary operations in the correct order.

Maintenance
This chapter provides information on how to maintain the TM‐T20 in its optimum operating
condition.

Cleaning

CAUTION:
Never clean the product with alcohol, benzine, thinner, or other such solvents. Doing so
may damage or break the parts made of plastic and rubber. However you can clean
the thermal print head with alcohol.

Cleaning the Printer Case

Be sure to turn off the printer, and wipe the dirt off the printer case with a dry cloth or a damp
cloth.

Cleaning the Print Head

To keep good print quality, it is necessary to clean the print head regularly (approximately every
3 months). Perform the cleaning of the print head as follows:

CAUTION:
When cleaning the print head or the frame on the side of the print head, do not touch it
immediately after printing because it may be very hot. Wait for a while until the
temperature goes down.

Do not damage the print head by touching it with any metal objects.

1. Power off the printer.

2. Open the roll paper cover.

Rev. A Maintenance 6-1

3. Remove any dirt on the thermal element of the print head with a cotton swab slightly
moistened with an alcohol solvent (ethanol or isopropyl alcohol).

Notes:
• Depending on the roll paper used, paper dust may stick to the platen roller and paper detector. To
remove the paper dust, clean the platen roller and paper detector with a cotton swab moistened
with water.

• Be sure to turn on the printer after alcohol solvent or water is completely dried off.
