Staying Professional in the UK


Office etiquette varies a lot among different companies, meaning that how employees are supposed to behave at a
given time often comes down to where exactly they work and what specific situation they are in. Nevertheless,
each country has its own general ideas of what is appropriate in a business setting, and these create common
themes. Taking the UK as an example, let’s look at some of the basics of office etiquette.

A good business depends on its staff members getting along, so having a good relationship with your co-workers is
always a good idea. Greet your colleagues and make some friendly conversation in the morning to start the work
day on a positive note. You could also ask them a little about themselves from time to time to show that you’re
taking an interest. Stay away from personal topics, such as religion or politics, though. Instead, try to focus on
lighter, more neutral topics to avoid any awkward or uncomfortable moments at work.

Space is also a key part of workplace relationships in the UK. Personal space is the amount of space each person
requires to feel comfortable in a situation. In the UK, people like to have lots of personal space, so don’t stand too
close to a colleague while speaking to them. Make sure there is one or two metres between you and the other
person. This way, you help them feel relaxed, which will make people enjoy working with you.

Shared space is equally important. This refers to the common areas of the workplace which everyone uses; for
example, the kitchen or the break room. In the UK, looking after these areas is considered a shared responsibility.
Be respectful and considerate about how you use these areas, and remember to clean up after yourself, as other
people will have to use those same facilities when you have finished with them.

Timekeeping is another key aspect of workplace etiquette. Avoid turning up to meetings late or submitting work
after a deadline. Making other people wait for you shows that you don’t respect their time, and as a result they feel
that you don’t respect them. In the UK, people consider timekeeping to be an important part of workplace etiquette,
so stay on top of your work and keep ahead of schedule. You’ll make yourself much easier to work with, and your
colleagues will thank you for it.

While etiquette may vary from place to place, respect the name of the game, no matter where you work. Be
respectful of those around you, and don’t do anything that you wouldn’t like your co-workers to do. This attitude is
the key to making sure that you’ll see very positive results not only at work, but wherever life takes you.
