1. General

1.1. Work Included

A. This Section specifies the requirements necessary to furnish and install:


1) Cable trays.
2) Ladder racks.

B. This Specification is primarily written around requirements for 60Hz facilities


and applies to all projects as written, unless noted otherwise for 50 Hz
facilities.

1.4. Quality Assurance, References and Regulatory Requirements

A. In the event of a conflict between the Specifications and/or Drawings and


the local or regional regulatory rules/codes/standards, in addition to the
applicable codes and/or standards, the requirements of the more stringent
shall prevail.

B. Standards, Listing, Labeling and Marking


1) For 60 Hz regions the following applies:
a. Electrical components and/or systems shall be listed and labeled by
a nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL) such as: UL, ETL,
CSA, or FM; shall be labeled and/or listed as part of a UL-labeled
assembly, or shall be evaluated by a third party acceptable to the
authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) as suitable for the use intended.
All labels shall be applied at the manufacturer’s factory or facility prior
to shipment.
b. Conform to the following Standards:
i. ASTM A123/A123M-2009 – Standard Specification for Zinc (Hot-
Dip Galvanized) Coatings on Iron and Steel Products.
ii. ASTM A 633/A 633M-2001 (R2006) – Standard Specification for
Normalized High-Strength Low-Allow Structural Steel Plates.
iii. ASTM A 653/A 653M REV A-2009 – Standard Specification for
Steel Sheet, Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) or Zinc-Iron Alloy-Coated
(Galvannealed) by the Hot-Dip Process.
iv. NECA NEIS 105-2007 – Standard for Installing Metal Cable
Trays.
v. NEMA VE 1-2009 – Metal Cable Tray Systems.
vi. NEMA VE 2-2006 – Cable Tray Installation Guidelines.
2) For 50 Hz regions the following applies:
a. BS 10111.
b. BS 10130.
c. BS 10025.
d. Product finish where used for outdoor installations: Hot dipped
galvanized to BS 729, DIN EN ISO 1461,

plates. Use in corrosive areas.
d. Lirad (additional supplier for Israel only).
e. OBO Betterman (additional supplier for Israel only).
f. B Line (additional supplier for Israel only).
2) Ladder Racks
a. Tolmega (formally Tolartois) (Baby Hercule, Hercule and Super
Hercule, with bolt-on rungs).
b. Rico.
c. Wiba.
d. Schneider – Mita GRP (Polyester Class 2) ladder and GRP
accessories. Use 316 SS steel bolts, nuts and washers and coupling
plates. Use in corrosive areas.

2.2. General

A. Cable Trays, Ladder Racks, and Cable Basket Trays


1) For 60 Hz regions the following applies:
a. Cable Trays (Ladder Type)
i. Tray: NEMA VE 1; Class 12C.
ii. Material and Finish of Tray, Fittings, and Accessories: steel, hot-
dipped galvanized in accordance with ASTM A653/A 653M
before fabrication & after fabrication in accordance with ASTM
A123 to prevent corrosion. Aluminum and stainless steel alloys
are inherently corrosion-resistant and no finish coating is
required.
iii. Inside Width: as indicated on Drawing.
iv. Inside Depth: 4 inches or as indicated on the Drawings.
v. Straight Section Rung Spacing: 6 inches on center or solid or
ventilated bottom as indicated on the Drawings.
vi. Inside Radii of Fittings: 12 inches or as indicated on the
Drawings.
vii. Accessories and Fittings: manufacturer’s standard clamps,
brackets, splice plates, reducer plates, blind ends, barrier strips,
connectors, and grounding/earthing straps.
viii. Covers: flanged, solid flush-cover, where indicated on the
Drawings.
ix. Support Span: Conform to Manufacturer’s specifications. If not
available use NEMA VE 1 Table 3-1 splicing plates and
connectors sized same as connecting tray.
2) For 50 Hz regions the following applies:
a. Cable Trays (Perforated Bottom-Type)
i. Tray: medium-duty pattern per clause 1.4.B.2.
(a) GRP Tray: solid or slotted Standard duty.
ii. Material and Finish of Tray, Fittings, and Accessories: steel,
galvanized as per clause 1.4.B.2.d and 1.4.B.2.e, unless
otherwise indicated on Drawings.
(a) GRP: Polyester NFR (halogen free) resin
iii. Inside Width: 50 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm, 220 mm,
300 mm, 400 mm, 450 mm, or 600 mm as indicated on the
Drawings.

iv. Inside Depth: 25 mm (75, 100, 150 and 220 mm), 100 mm (300,
450, and 600 mm).
v. Radii of Fittings: 600 mm minimum horizontal bends and 200 mm
minimum vertical bends, or as indicated on the Drawings.
vi. Accessories and Fittings: Manufacturer's standard clamps,
hangers, brackets, splice plates, reducer plates, blind ends,
barrier strips, connectors, and grounding straps.
(a) GRP: accessories shall be GRP complete with 316 SS bolts,
nuts, washers and coupling plates.
vii. Covers: flanged, solid cover or as indicated on the Drawings.
b. Ladder Racks
i. Rack: , heavy-duty pattern per clause 1.4.B.2..
(a) GRP: Heavy duty
ii. Material and Finish of Rack, Fittings, and Accessories: steel,
galvanized as per clause 1.4.B.2.d and 1.4.B.2.e, unless
indicated otherwise on the Drawings.
(a) GRP: Polyester Class 2
iii. Inside Width: 150 mm, 200 mm, 300 mm, 450 mm, 600 mm,
750 mm, 900 mm, or 1,200 mm as indicated on the Drawings.
iv. Inside Depth: 75 mm (Baby Hercule), 100 mm (Hercule) and
140 mm (Super Hercule).
(a) GRP: as available
v. Straight Section Rung Spacing: 200 or 400 mm on center.
(a) GRP: as available
vi. Inside Radii of Fittings: 600 mm.
vii. Accessories and Fittings: manufacturer's standard clamps,
hangers, brackets, splice plates, reducer plates, blind ends,
barrier strips, connectors, and grounding straps.
(a) GRP: accessories shall be GRP complete with 316 SS bolts,
nuts, washers and coupling plates.
c. Cable Basket Trays.
i. Material and Finish of Tray, Fittings, and Accessories: Zinc
Bichromate or steel, galvanized as per clause 1.4.B.2.d and
1.4.B.2.e, or as indicated on Drawings.
ii. Inside Width: 50 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm, 300 mm, 400
mm, 500 mm, or 600 mm as indicated on the Drawings.
iii. Inside Depth: 40mm or 60mm as indicated on the Drawings.
iv. Radii of Fittings: 600 mm minimum horizontal bends and 200 mm
minimum vertical bends, or as indicated on the Drawings.
v. Accessories and Fittings: Manufacturer's standard clamps,
hangers, brackets, splice plates, reducer plates, blind ends,
barrier strips, connectors, and grounding straps.
vi. Where basket is permitted: inside computer rooms only (above
and below raised metal floor).

B. Tray Identification and Warning Signage

3. Execution

3.1. Installation

A. Supports
1) Follow the requirements of Section 26_05_29_00(16070).

B. General
1) For 60 Hz regions the following applies:
a. Install in conformance with NEMA VE 1 and VE 2 requirements.
2) For 50 Hz regions the following applies:
a. Installation: in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

C. Where possible, at least 12 inches (300 mm) working space shall be


reserved between stacked racks/trays and above the top tray/rack to
facilitate cable installation. The minimum allowable distance shall be 8
inches (200 mm) to provide adequate ventilation of loaded cables. When
racks/trays are stacked, the power rack/tray shall be at bottom unless
indicated otherwise on the Drawings.

D. Cut standard straight sections to length in field.

E. Deburr and file all rough cable tray edges and any cut sections.

F. All galvanized steel cable tray/rack, support steelwork, and brackets cut or
shaped on site shall be adequately treated with two coats of cold galvanizer.

G. Only manufacturer's fabricated tees, horizontal bends, and reducers shall be


used. Vertical bends may be achieved using change-of-level splice plates.
Site-fabricated tees, bends, etc., shall only be used with the agreement of
the Contractor.

H. Rack / Tray Segregation:


1) For 60 Hz regions the following applies:
a. None specified.
2) For 50 Hz regions the following applies:
a. Cables shall be routed on separate ladder rack and tray systems
grouped as follows:

3. Provide the following minimum separation distances between
pathways for copper communications cables and power wiring of
400 volts or less:
a. Open or 300 mm from electric motors, fluorescent
Nonmetal light fixtures, and unshielded power lines

I. Expansion Connectors
1) For 60 Hz regions the following applies:
a. Use expansion connectors where indicated in NEMA VE 1, or where
cable tray crosses building expansion or seismic joints.
2) For 50 Hz regions the following applies:
a. Use expansion connectors at building expansion joints and every
50 meters in a straight run. Set expansion joint gap at 7 mm.

J. Bonding Continuity
1) Provide bonding continuity between cable tray/rack sections and fittings
in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and Section
26_05_26_00(16060).
2) Where cable tray/rack sections are not physically connected to each
other, a 6 AWG (16 mm2) copper earth strap shall be provided connected
between both sides to maintain electrical continuity.

K. Fire Barriers

1) Provide removable fire barrier pillows at fire barrier penetration per
Section 07_84_00_00(07840).
2) Install fire barrier warning signs at fire barrier penetrations per Section
26_05_53_00(16075).

L. Under Raised Metal Floor


1) For 60 Hz regions the following applies:
a. None specified.
2) For 50 Hz regions the following applies:
a. Cable tray/ladder shall be of the 75 mm inside depth unless
otherwise indicated on the drawings.
b. Basket tray shall be of the 40 mm inside depth unless otherwise
indicated by the drawings.

M. The cable tray installation shall be inspected and accepted by the A/E prior
to installation of any cable. Upon completion of tray installation and prior to
installation of cable, notify A/E and Contractor that the tray installation is
complete and ready for inspection. Obtain written acceptance from A/E prior
to installation of cable.
