Student: No, not really. Of course, I would be anxious ____ money if I didn’t have
very much, but I believe that too much money can be bad _____ you.
Student: Well, there are lots of stories in the media about people who have won lots
of money in the lottery and realized that they are not happier as a result. I

I. Warm up 2 minutes
IELTS Grammar often used questions where you have to choose the correct
4
preposition to go with the noun, verb or adjective. There can also be questions
where the preposition is given in the sentence, but instead you have to choose the
correct noun, verb or adjective. Another tricky thing to remember is that some
nouns and verbs are the same, but may take different prepositions or the verb may
take no preposition (Eg. a need for, to need).
Verb + preposition
about
• "About" usually indicates the object of our thoughts or conversation, etc. We can chat /
dream / talk / think / worry / complain about something or someone.
at
5
• "At" often refers to the object of observation: gaze / look / peer / stare / aim / point / shout
/ yell at something or someone.
for
• We can do something for someone else or for a cause, act or speak for someone, pay / hunt
/ look / search / appeal / wait for something or someone.
to
• We use to with verbs such as give, hand, send, write, to indicate the person or thing that
receives or experiences the object of the verb. E.g. Have you talked to anyone who has done
this course?

II. Prepositions 3 minutes
Adjective + preposition
at
• We use adjective + at to talk about things that we do well or badly: She was
always brilliant at drawing.
of
• We also commonly use of as a preposition after different adjectives, e.g. afraid 6
of, generous of, proud of, scared of
by
• Adjectives that end ‘-ed’ describe emotions – they tell us how people feel about
something. We can use by after “-ed” adjectives to say how something or someone
makes us feel.

Noun + preposition
There is no clear-cut rule that determines which prepositions connect to which nouns.
The only way to do this is by seeing them used in everyday writing and speech.
Below we will look at examples of the most common prepositions that pair with nouns.
