(a) What is the distance between the two spheres?

2. (a) Two insulated charged copper spheres A and B have their centres
separated by a distance of 50 cm. What is the mutual force of electrostatic
repulsion if the charge on each is 6.5 × 10–7C?
The radii of A and B are negligible compared to the distance of
separation.
(b) What is the force of repulsion if each sphere is charged double the
above amount, and the distance between them is halved? 3
3. Suppose the spheres A and B in above question have identical sizes. A third
sphere of the same size but uncharged is brought in contact with the first,
then brought in contact with the second, and finally removed from both.
What is the new force of repulsion between A and B? 2

4. A system has two charges qA = 2.5 × 10–7 C and qB = – 2.5 × 10 C located
at points A = (0, 0, –15 cm) and B = (0, 0, +15 cm) respectively. What are
the total charge and electric dipole moment of the system? 2

field. Give the signs of the three charges. Which particle has the highest

6. Consider a uniform electric field E = 3×103 𝑖̂ NC–1. (a) What is the flux of
this field through a square of 10 cm on a side whose plane is parallel to
the yz plane? (b) What is the flux through the same square if the normal
to its plane makes a 60° angle with the x-axis? 2
7. Sketch the electric field lines for two-point charges q1 and q2 for q1 = q2
and q1 > q2 separated by a distance d. 1

10. (a) Define electric flux. Write its SI unit.


(b) A spherical rubber balloon carries a charge that is uniformly distributed
over its surface. As the balloon is blown up and increases in size, how does
the total electric flux come out of the surface change? Give reason. 2
11. Two identical point charges, q each, are kept 2 m apart in air. A third point
charge Q of unknown magnitude and sign is placed on the line joining the
charges such that the system remains in equilibrium. Find the position and
nature of Q. 2
12. Figure shows two large metal plates P1 and P2, tightly held against each
other and placed between two equal and unlike point charges perpendicular
to the line joining them. 2
(i) What will happen to the plates when they are released?

(ii) Draw the pattern of the electric field lines for the system.
13. A metallic spherical shell has an inner radius R1 and outer radius R2. A
charge Q is placed at the centre of the spherical cavity. What will be surface
charge density on (i) the inner surface, and (ii) the outer surface? 2

14. Four-point charges Q, q, Q and q are placed at the corners of a square of


side ‘a’. Find the resultant electric force on a charge Q. 2
15. Three-point charges q, – 4q and 2q are placed at the vertices of an
equilateral triangle ABC of side ‘l’. Obtain the expression for the
magnitude of the resultant electric force acting on the charge q. 2
16. Three identical dipoles are arranged as shown below. Find the net electric
field at point P. 2

17. Two charged conducting sphere of radii a and b are connected to each other
by a wire. Find the ratio of the electric fields at their surfaces. 3
18. A thin metallic spherical shell of radius R carries a charge Q on its surface.

outside the shell at a distance x from the centre as shown in the figure.

Find (i) force on the charges at the centre C of the shell and at point A.
(ii)the electric flux through the shell (iii) State the law used. 3
19. Two small identical electrical dipoles AB and CD each of dipole moment
p are kept at an angle of 1200 as shown in the figure. 3

(a) What is the resultant dipole moment of this combination? (b) If this
system is subjected to electric field E directed along +X direction, what
will be the magnitude and direction of the torque acting on this?
