Ultimately, we all know that what we acquire will never make us happy. Who we become
determines our happiness; it is the only lasting aspect of life. I believe deep inside each of us is
an inner hunger for something more — something deeper, richer, and lasting. Each of us has an
inner certainty that, no matter how great our lives already are, there is yet another level — one
of passion, gratitude, connection, joy, and success.

W
e are all practical psychologists. We all have the ability to decipher what’s r eally going
on in a situation — both with ourselves and with those we care about. The challenge
is that we haven’t been taught how to access those skills to effectively create the
changes in ourselves and in our lives that we desire.
The Three Elements of Practical Psychology represent a series of refinements that will help
you to u nderstand the nature of human beings and in turn be able to predict how and why
we do what we do. The more you can understand about what’s naturally going on with people,
the more compassion, c onnection, and positive influence you can have as a parent, a leader, a
professional, a loving partner, or a friend.
In order to become effective practical psychologists, there are three questions we must
answer:
1 What stops us from moving forward? Taking action? Being our best?
3 Why do we do what we do? What are the ultimate drives behind all human action?

The answer is fear. Fear can destroy our psychology and immobilize us from taking action. All
of us experience fear in some context during our lives: fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of
success (i.e., how can I handle the pressure and continue to deliver at a high level), fear of love
(or losing love), fear of being alone, or fear of the unknown. In fact, most of us feel a combination
of the these fears over the course of our lives. Fear is hard-wired into every human being –
nothing we do this weekend or in our lifetimes will take fear away. The secret is learning how
to use fear instead of letting fear use you!
While we all experience countless variations, there are two primary fears that all human
beings share:

What controls our lives are the meanings we associate to the things in our lives, which are
shaped by our own personal psychology and our world view (the beliefs and values that we’ve
created). For example, two people may experience the same event, where one person thinks,
“God is punishing me. I might as well die,” and s omeone else on the other hand thinks, “God is
challenging me. This is the greatest gift I’ve ever received.” The perceptual difference not only
affects the quality of each person’s life, but what action they will take next.
Once meaning is established, each individual will have a pattern of emotions that they
associate to this meaning as their natural way of coping. For example, if one person feels that
someone has verbally abused or humiliated them, they may strike back with physical violence.
Someone else might believe it is important to save face by p
retending the attack had no impact
whatsoever. And yet another person may respond to the same situation by trying to hide and
protect themselves and work to avoid this person or the situation at all costs. The variance in
meanings and emotions people can generate is virtually unlimited.
All meanings are driven by our individual patterns of emotions. We all have p
atterns of
emotions. For example, we all know people we like to be around because they always seem
happy. We also know people who seem to be continuously frustrated, sad, or angry.
All of us have a variety of emotions we consistently experience, and these emotions are driven by
three forces that mold the meanings we take from those emotions: the three primary patterns of
emotion called the Triad.
Human needs psychology provides an answer to the age-old question, “Why do human beings
do the things they do?” How is it that one person will sacrifice his own life for another, while
another person will murder a stranger for sheer pleasure? What creates a Nelson Mandela or
a Charles Manson? A Jeffrey Dahmer or a John F. Kennedy? A Unabomber or a Martin Luther
King?
No matter who you are in the world, or what you do, there’s a common force that’s driving and
shaping all our emotions and actions. It determines the quality of our lives, and ultimately, our
destinies.
The universal force is human need. Regardless of who we are — our backgrounds, our profes-
sions, our religion, race, or creed — we are all driven, day after day, to fulfill primal needs that
have been encoded into our nervous systems over centuries. Although each of us is a unique
and special soul, we’re all wired in very much the same way.
There are six human needs — fundamental drives within each one of us — that compel us for-
ward in a quest to experience a life of meaning. There is no conscious effort n

Everybody needs to feel special and Humans need to feel connected with someone
important in some way. People will seek or something — a person, an ideal, a value,

People find ways to meet these needs in positive, negative, or neutral ways, but every person
finds a way to meet them in some way.
Any activity, action, or emotion that fulfills at least three needs at a high level becomes, in effect,
an addiction. Likewise, people have positive, negative, and neutral addictions.
There is always a way to fulfill a need; the skill lies in finding a sustainable way to fulfill it,
and in a way that gives you more pleasure than pain.
All human beings are consistently seeking to meet the 6 Human Needs, but we all tend to value
two more than the rest. For example, someone who values certainty will live a radically different
life than someone values uncertainty/variety. Similarly, someone who focuses on significance will
interact with others very differently than someone whose number one need is for connection/
love. When you know which needs you value most, you can better understand the choices you
make, as well as your emotional patterns.

While all seven areas of life are important, there is a hierarchy that creates peak performance and fulfillment.
For example, if you don’t master your body — your capacity to maximize your health, energy and vitality — all
the money, career success, or contribution in the world will be worthless. You can’t experience an extraordi-
nary quality of life without the vehicle that’s going to help you create it. Or, if you spend your time trying to
solve all your relationship problems, but you haven’t even mastered your emotions, it’s a recipe for disaster.
Without mastering meaning and emotion, you will always be at the mercy of life’s challenges. Having a firm
grasp of your emotions frees you to be proactive rather than reactive to changes you face. Similarly, you must
determine how you focus and spend your time in order to create a successful career. Once you’ve discov-
ered how to add value in your work/career/mission, you can create a plan to grow your wealth. Spiritual
growth and your capacity to celebrate and contribute is at the top because you can’t enjoy the fruits of your
labor until you’ve sowed the right seeds.
This is not to say that a person can’t work on their finances and transform their body at the same time. Rather,

o matter how extreme, miraculous, challenging, or complex a goal is in any area of life,
most of them are obtainable with the right strategy and effort. A person can climb Mount
Everest, lift 400 lbs, stay awake for 72 hours straight, or lose 30 lbs in 30 days and
experience great victory. The true measure of success, however, is not in the initial attainment
of a goal; rather, it lies with the ability for the change to be sustainable across time, context,
and circumstance. To create sustainable success and fulfillment, it requires a psychology and
mindset that is based on an ongoing commitment to three principles:
Remember, the immutable law of life: 80% of success in life is psychology and 20% is
mechanics. What is the 80% that will get you through the challenges, obstacles, and difficult

his program is about energy: the vital force within each of us that allows us to maximize
our capacity as human beings. At the same time, when we get out of balance, and
our energy is depleted, we experience all kinds of problems such as stress, fatigue,
depression, and disease. Balanced body chemistry and maintaining a proper ratio between
acid and alkaline foods in your diet are of vital importance to maintaining your health. In fact,
too much acidity in the body’s tissues is the cause of many types of health changes ranging from
lethargy and fatigue, to obesity, and ultimately to much bigger health challenges and disease.
One of the highest priorities of your body is to make sure that the alkalinity throughout
your body remains at a level supporting cellular life. At a fundamental level, the regulatory
mechanisms such as breathing, circulation, digestion, and hormonal production balance the pH
level in the body by removing acid residues from body tissues. If the pH deviates too far to the
acidic or the alkaline side, cells become poisoned by their own toxic waste and die.
THE PH SCALE:
This is a measure of how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The initials pH stand for
“Potential of Hydrogen.” Acids have pH values under 7, and alkalis have pH values
over 7. If a substance has a pH value of 7, it is neutral-neither acidic or alkaline.

Different tissues of the body need to maintain different levels of pH to sustain life.
The blood and most tissues should be slightly alkaline, whereas urine, saliva, and
the digestive tract should be slightly acidic. In fact, the blood can only support very
minor fluctuations in its pH level and still sustain life. Most important, however, is the
body’s alkaline reserve: an excess of alkali (comprised of elements such as sodium
bicarbonate) that is stored until it’s needed to neutralize excess acid in the body. If
the body becomes too acidic, or depletes its alkaline reserves, then the cells begin to
weaken and break down, and body functions become compromised.

he term “aerobic” means, literally, “with oxygen” and refers to moderate exercise
sustained over a period of time. Your aerobic system gives you your endurance, and it
encompasses the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and aerobic muscles. If you condition your
metabolism to operate aerobically, and supply it with proper diet and exercise, you burn fat as
your primary fuel.
“Anaerobic,” on the other hand, means “without oxygen,” and refers to exercises that produce
short bursts of power. Anaerobic exercise burns glycogen as its primary fuel, while causing the

The body’s chemical response to a workout, not the workout itself, determines whether or
not it is aerobic or anaerobic. The level of intensity — one’s heart rate — is a major factor in
