8-WHEELER DETC TOWER CAR

(DUAL ENGINE)- ELECTRICAL BASICS

Sai Rama Krishna

JE/TRD/VEH/KZJ
ELECTRICAL BASICS OF 8WHEELER DETC (DUAL ENGINE)

• This is applicable to the following Tower Cars :

 BEML DETC- MLY

 BEML DETC – RDM
 BSL DETC – KZJ
 BSL DETC – DKJ
 PLW – JMKT
 ICF – VKB

It is important for us to know the relay terminology and its functioning. This will be helpful during the troubleshooting
of DETC Tcars.

In Cab 1 control cubicle , we find nearly 40 contactors. It is confusing and hard to remember . So, this will be handy
and useful for understanding the system.

CONTACTOR ON/OFF
• What is CONTACTOR ON/OFF ?

A contactor when in energized condition(contacts will move inside), is ON condition. When the same contactor is in
de-energized or not energized(contacts will be outside/released), it is OFF position.
ON (black contacts inside) OFF(contacts released)
• Engine is not cranking (no sound) or Engine is not holding

Check the following contactors and its condition(ON/OFF) to confirm the actual cause .
• R21/R22 - Low hydraulic oil level
• R41/R42 – Low Lube oil Pressure
• R51/R52 – Engine Over Speed
• R61/R62 – Low coolant level
• R71/R72- Hydraulic oil flow
• Air lock issue
• If any of the contactor is in OFF position, then that could be the possible reason.
• If the contactors are in normal position then following checks needs to be done:
1. If engine nor cranking – Starter Motor and Mangnetic switch to be checked
2. If engine cranking but not holding – air lock needs to be removed

In addition to this check FC21/FC22, if it in ON condition , trip to the engine is still persisting and the above
mentioned parameters of the engine needs to be checked.
MOTOR SWITCH GROUP CIRCUIT
• It is adviced to inspect the motor switch group panel and identify all the parts in it.
• Motor Switch group consists of the following :
1. Reverser Unit – For engaging the tower car in FWD/REV direction
2. Line Contactors – L1 ,L2, L3 and L4
3. Motor Over Load Relays
• It also has a control terminal block where all the control cables are connected.
• Refer the previous drawing and identify the positions of cables with ferrules 1,2,
102,103,104,105,106,107,108,109,115,116,117. Note that these cables are Positive(+).
• Cable with Ferrule number 320 is Negative(-).

At this point you need not know the entire circuit, but it is important to know the basics of relays and motor
switch group that are mentioned in this document.
