SECTION I (50 marks)
Answer all the questions in the spaces provided in this section
1. The roof of a ware house is in the shape of a triangular prism as shown below

Calculate the angle between faces RSTU and PQRS (3 marks)

2. Given that 𝑦 = 2 cos(3𝑥 − 30°), state the amplitude, period and phase angle. (3 marks)

3. The cash price of a television set is Ksh. 36,000. Compound interest of 3.4366% per month is
charged on the balance when the television set is bought on hire purchase terms by paying a
deposit of Ksh. 8,000 and the instalments cleared in 12 months. Calculate the amount of each
instalment to the nearest shilling. (3 marks)

4. Simplify (1 + √3)(1 − √3) and hence evaluate 1+ to 3 significant figures given

8. Solve for 𝜃 in 0 ≤ 𝜃 ≤ 360°, cos 3 𝜃 = −0.7660 (3 marks)

9. Find all the integral values of x which satisfy the inequality. (3 marks)

10. A circle passing through point (−3, −1) has it center at (4,3). Determine the equation of the
circle in the form 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 = 0, where a,b and c are constants. (3 marks)

11. Calculate the standard deviation of the following data; 2,5,7,11,13,14 (3 marks)

12. Vector 𝑞̃ has a magnitude of 7 and is parallel to vector 𝑝̃. Given that 𝑝̃ = 3𝑖̃ − 𝑗̃ + 2 𝑘̃ ,
express 𝑞̃ in terms of i, j and k. (3 marks)

13. Maize and millet costs Sh. 45 and Sh. 56 per kilogram respectively. Calculate the ratio in
which they were mixed if a profit of20% was made by selling the mixture at 66 per kilogram.
(4 marks)

14. The height of two students were measured as 172.4 cm and 177.7cm. Determine the least
possible difference in the height of the two students. (3 marks)

15. Two bags A and B each contain a mixture of red and blue balls. Bag A contains 9 red balls
and 11 blue balls while bag B contains 15 red balls while and 10 blue balls. A bag is selected
at random and a ball is picked at random from it.
a) Draw a probability tree diagram to illustrate this information. (1 mark)

b) Find the probability that the ball picked is blue. (2 marks)

16. The sides of a triangular stool were measured as 8 cm, 10cm, and 15cm. Calculate its area
correct to 2 decimal plates. (3 marks)

17. Two equal circles with centre O and Q and radii 8cm intersect at point A and B as shown
below.

Given that the distance between O and Q is 12 cm and that line AB meets OQ at X. Find the
a) Length of chord AB. (2 marks)

b) Area of shaded region. (6 marks)

c) Reflex angle AOB (2 marks)

18. In the figure below QOT is a diameter. ∠𝑄𝑇𝑃 = 48°. ∠𝑇𝑄𝑅 = 76° and ∠𝑆𝑅𝑇 = 37°

Calculate:
a) ∠𝑅𝑂𝑄 (2 marks)

b) ∠𝑆𝑈𝑇 (4 marks)

c) Obtuse angle ROT (2 marks)

d) Angle PST (2 marks)

19. A student has a probability of 3 of waking up on time. If he wakes up on time there is a

probability of 10 that he will catch the bus and be on time to school. If he oversleeps there is

a probability of 5 that he will catch the bus. If he catches the bus the probability that he will

reach school on time is 8, if he misses the bus there is only a probability of that he will be

on time for school. Using the tree diagram or otherwise
(a) Determine.
i. The probability that he catches the bus and reach in school on time (3 marks)

ii. The probability that he is late for the school. (2 marks)

iii. The probability that he oversleeps and is on time for school. (2 marks)

(b) Science club is made up of 6 boys and 8 girls. The club has three officials. Find the
probability that the club officials has more boys than girls (3 marks)

Mrs. Musau earned a basic salary of Ksh. 18 600 per month and allowances amounting to

Calculate:
a) Total taxable income in k£ p.a (2 marks)

b) (i) The tax payable in Kenya shillings per month without relief (4 marks)

(ii) The tax payable in Kenya shillings per month after relief (2 marks)

c) Mrs. Musau’s net monthly income (2 marks)

21. The ends of the roof of a workshop are segment of a circle of radius 10 m. The roof is 20 m
long. The angle of the centre is 1200 as shown in the figure below.

a) Calculate:
i. The area of one end of the roof. (4 marks)

ii. The area of the curve surface of the roof. (2 marks)

b) What would be cost to the nearest shilling of covering the two ends and the curved
surface with galvanized iron sheet costing Sh.80 per square meter? (4 marks)

22. Three quantities P, Q and R are such that P varies directly as the square of Q and inversely as
the square root of R.
(a) Given that 𝑃 = 20 when 𝑄 = 5 and 𝑅 = 9,
i. Write the equation connecting P, Q and R (3 marks)

ii. Find P when 𝑄 = 7 and 𝑅 = 25 (2 marks)

(b) If Q increases by 20% and R decreases by 36%, find the percentage increase in P.

24. The product of the first three consecutive terms of a geometric progression is 729. If the first
term is a and the common ratio is r,
a) Express r in terms of a. (2 marks)

b) Given that the sum of the three terms above is 39, find the value of the a and r, hence
write down two possible sequences each up to the 4th term. (5 marks)

c) The sum of the first n terms of the sequence is 3279. Find n. (3 marks)
