KEYTERMS:
1.Globe : It is a true model(miniature form) of earth.
2. Axis: A needle fixed through the globe in a tilted manner. On earth it is an imaginary line
and it moves around its axis.
3.Equator : An imaginary line running on the globe divides it into two equal parts. The
northern part is known as Northern Hemisphere and southern part is called Southern
Hemisphere.
4.Parallel of Latitudes : All parallel circles from the equator upto the poles are called parallel
of latitudes.
5.LONGITUDES: The distance of a place east or west of a line from the North Pole to the
South Pole that passes through Greenwich.
6.GRID: A criss-cross network of latitudinal lines and longitudinal lines running on the globe.
7.INDIAN STANDARD TIME(IST):is the local time at the standard meridian (82 degrees 30’E)
taken as the standard time for the whole country.
Q2.What is a globe?
Ans. Globe is a true model(miniature form ) of the earth.
► They are parallels to each other. ► They are not parallel to each-other.
► They do not meet to each other. ► They meet to each other at poles as
they are semi-circle that converge at
the two poles. These imaginary lines
run from the North pole to the
South pole.
► The total number parallels of ► They are total 360 in number. In
latitudes including the equator are both the hemispheres eastern and
179, as the parallels of western, there are 179 meridians of
latitude are drawn at an interval of longitude from 0 to 180 degree.
one degree, there will be 89 Hence, it comes (179 + 179 + 0 +
parallels in the northern and the 180) = 360.
southern hemispheres each and
poles are two points only. Hence, it
comes (89+89+1) = 179.

Q6. Why does Torrid zone receive maximum amount of heat?
Ans. The mid-day sun is exactly overhead at least once a year on all latitudes in between the
Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. This area, therefore, receives the maximum
heat and is called the Torrid zone.
