CHAPTER 2 GLOBE: LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE

HANDOUT
KEYTERMS:
1.Globe : It is a true model(miniature form) of earth.

2. Axis: A needle fixed through the globe in a tilted manner. On earth it is an imaginary line
and it moves around its axis.

3.Equator : An imaginary line running on the globe divides it into two equal parts. The
northern part is known as Northern Hemisphere and southern part is called Southern
Hemisphere.

4.Parallel of Latitudes : All parallel circles from the equator upto the poles are called parallel
of latitudes.

5.LONGITUDES: The distance of a place east or west of a line from the North Pole to the
South Pole that passes through Greenwich.

6.GRID: A criss-cross network of latitudinal lines and longitudinal lines running on the globe.

7.INDIAN STANDARD TIME(IST):is the local time at the standard meridian (82 degrees 30’E)
taken as the standard time for the whole country.

Answer the following questions:

Q1.What is the true shape of the earth?
Ans. Our planet earth is not a sphere. It is slightly flattened at the North and the South Poles
and bulge in the middle. The true shape of the earth is a Geoid.

Q2.What is a globe?
Ans. Globe is a true model(miniature form ) of the earth.

Q3. What is the latitudinal value of the following?

a. TROPIC OF CANCER : (23 ½ degrees N)
b. TROPIC OF CAPRICORN : (23 ½ degrees S)
c. ARCTIC CIRCLE : (66 ½ degrees N )
d. ANTARCTIC CIRCLE: (66 ½ degrees S)
e. EQUATOR: (0 degrees)
Q4. Explain the three heat zones of the Earth with the help of diagram.
a. Torrid zone: Mid-day sun is exactly overhead at least once a year on all latitudes in
between Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. This area receives maximum heat and is
called torrid zone.
b. Temperate zone: Mid-day sun never shines overhead on any latitude beyond the Tropic
of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The angle of the sun’s rays goes on decreasing
towards the poles. These regions have moderate temperatures.
c. Frigid zone: Areas lying between Arctic Circle and the North Pole in the Northern
Hemisphere and the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole in the Southern Hemisphere,
are very cold. Sun does not rise much above the horizon. Sun rays are always slanting
providing less heat.

Q 5. Differentiate between parallels of latitudes and meridians of longitudes.

Ans.
Parallels of latitudes Meridians of longitudes
► They run from east to west. ► They run from north to south.

► They are complete circles. ► They are semi-circle.

► They are parallels to each other. ► They are not parallel to each-other.

► They do not meet to each other. ► They meet to each other at poles as
they are semi-circle that converge at
the two poles. These imaginary lines
run from the North pole to the
South pole.
► The total number parallels of ► They are total 360 in number. In
latitudes including the equator are both the hemispheres eastern and
179, as the parallels of western, there are 179 meridians of
latitude are drawn at an interval of longitude from 0 to 180 degree.
one degree, there will be 89 Hence, it comes (179 + 179 + 0 +
parallels in the northern and the 180) = 360.
southern hemispheres each and
poles are two points only. Hence, it
comes (89+89+1) = 179.
Example: Equator Example: Prime Meridian
Q6. Why does Torrid zone receive maximum amount of heat?
Ans. The mid-day sun is exactly overhead at least once a year on all latitudes in between the
Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. This area, therefore, receives the maximum
heat and is called the Torrid zone.

Q7. Why is it 5.30 p.m. in India and 12.00 noon in London?

Ans. The earth rotates 360 degrees in about 24 hours which means15 degrees an hour or 1
degree in four minutes. India is located east of Greenwich at 82 degrees30’E is 5 hours and
30 minutes ahead of GM. So 15 degree east of Greenwich is 15 x 4=60 minutes.

Q.8.Write the full form of

b.GMT: Greenwich MeanTime
