1. As we move away from the equator, the size of the latitudes ..............
2. The poles fall in the ............. zone.
3. To locate a point, we need to know its latitude as well as ...........
4. The British Royal Observatory is located in ...........
5. A hemisphere is one ............. of a sphere.

What is the Equator?

Answer: An imaginary line running from east to west on the globe that divides it into two
equal parts. This line is known as the Equator.

What is prime meridian?

Answer: The prime meridian is an imaginary line of longitude that runs through Greenwich,
England, and has a value of 0 degrees.

What is a globe ?
Ans: A globe is a three-dimensional model of the Earth that is spherical or ball-shaped. It is a
miniature version of the Earth that provides a three-dimensional view of the Earth by
showing distances, areas, and directions.

Name different types of globes.

Answer: The different types of globes are:
• Big globes, which are not easy to carry.
• Small pocket globes.
• Globes are like balloons that can be inflated and handy and easy to carry.

What is an axis of the earth?

Ans: The Earth's axis is an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole,
through the centre of the Earth, and around which the Earth rotates once every 24 hours.

What do you mean by parallels of latitude?

Ans: Parallels of latitude is an imaginary circles that run east to west across the Earth and
measure distance north or south of the equator.

What do you mean by longitude?

Ans: Longitude is a geographic coordinate that measures the distance east or west of the
prime meridian on Earth's surface.

What are the important parallels of Latitudes?

Ans: The important parallels of latitudes are :
i. Tropic of cancer ( ) in the northern hemisphere.
ii. Tropic of Capricorn ( ) in the southern hemisphere.
iii. Artic circle ( ) in the north of equator.
iv. Antarctic circle ( )in the south of equator.

How does Prime Meridian divide the Earth?

Answer: The prime meridian divides the earth into two equal halves, the Eastern Hemisphere
and the Western Hemispheres.

How does equator divide the Earth?

Answer: The equator divides the earth into two equal halves, the northern Hemisphere and
the southern Hemisphere.

What are the important features of latitudes?

Answer: Some important features of latitudes are:

i. They are drawn between the poles.

ii. These circles run parallel to the equator and never meet each other.
iii. 0° Latitude is the equator, which is the longest latitude.
iv. They are 181 in number.
v. Latitudes are not equal in size.
vi. The value of each latitude is followed by either the word north or south. Generally,
the letter ‘N’ or ‘S’ indicates this.

What are the features of longitudes?

Answer: The features of longitudes are:

i. They are drawn to join the poles.

ii. They are semi circles and the distance between them decreases steadily and becomes
zero at the poles, where all the meridians meet.

iii. All meridians are of equal length.

iv. 0° meridian is called the Prime Meridian.
v. They are 360 in number.
vi. The letter E for the east and W for the west follows the longitude of a place.

What are heat zones?

Ans: Heat zones are the different zones of the earth, where the sun's rays fall differently, thus
causing different climate patterns. These zones are called the Torrid Zone, the two Temperate
Zones, and the two Frigid Zones.

What is a Torrid zone?

Ans: A torrid zone is the hottest region of the Earth located between the Tropic of Cancer and
the Tropic of Capricorn. This area receives the maximum amount of heat and therefore it is
called a torrid zone.

What is a Temperate zone?

Ans: A temperate zone is a region with mild temperatures located between the polar and
subtropical regions of the Earth.

What is a Frigid zone?

Ans: A frigid zone is a very cold region of Earth that is located between the Arctic Circle and
the North Pole in the Northern Hemisphere, and between the Antarctic Circle and the South
Pole in the Southern Hemisphere.

What is a grid? Or What is geographical grid?

Ans: A grid is a network of imaginary horizontal and vertical lines drawn on a map or globe
to help find the exact location of a place on Earth. The horizontal lines are called latitudes
and the vertical lines are called longitudes. This system is called a grid or grid system.

What is the full form of GMT?

Ans: Greenwich Mean Time. It is located in London.

What is IST?
Ans: IST is the Indian Standard Time ( ), it is the only time zone observed
throughout India.

What is the time difference between IST and GMT?

Ans: 5 hours and 30 minutes. So it will be 7:30pm in India when it is 2pm in London.

Why do we have Indian standard time?

Ans: India has Indian Standard Time (IST) because the country is large and has a significant
east-west extent. Without a standard time, different regions of India would have different
times, which could lead to confusion and problems.

Why is it necessary to have a standard time for a country?

Ans: It necessary to have a standard time for a country because time varies with longitude,
and if different places on different meridians follow their own local time, it can lead to
confusion and chaos.
