GRAMMAR, VOCABULARY, COMPREHENSION

2. Read the passage and answer in complete sentences.

An extract from the short story Nutmeg and Snowstorm

Janet sucked the end of her pencil and thought about what
she was going to write. How could she describe “My Pet”
when she didn't have one? Dogs, cats, mice, hamsters and
tortoises were not allowed in the flats, and there wasn't much
to say about a couple of stick insects who used to live in a
shoebox with holes punched in the lid. Their names had been
Zombie and Squash, but they didn't last very long, poor creatures, and even Janet hadn't felt like
arranging a proper funeral for them. They had ended up in one of the wheelie-bins at the back of
the flats, still in their box, and that was that.
Janet put her hand up. “Please , Miss, I haven't got a pet.” Miss Penfol pushed her glasses up her
nose and sighed.
“Never mind, dear,” she said at last. “Imagine a pet. Tell us about a pet you would like to have if
you could have one.”
Janet bent her head. Now she knew exactly what to put. She began at once, worried that the bell
would go before she could write about Nutmeg.
Last summer, we went on vacation to a farm. On the farm there was a pony called Nutmeg. She
was quite small. She was brown with a white bit on her nose. On our last day, Mr. Welling, the
farmer, let me sit on Nutmeg and ride her. We walked all around a big field. I gave Nutmeg some
sugar before we went home. I wish I could ride on Nutmeg's back again. I miss her. Mom says
we can go to the farm again this year. I hope I can ride Nutmeg again. I wish I had a pony of my
own. If I had a pony, I would look after it very well and brush its coat every day.
On her way home from school, Janet thought about Nutmeg. Once, she'd asked her mother:
“Why do I never dream about Nutmeg, mum? I always think about her just before I go to sleep.”
“Maybe you do dream about her,” Mum said. “Maybe it's just that you can't remember the dream
when you wake up.”
What was the point of dreaming, Janet thought, if you couldn't remember anything in the
morning?
She decided to start daydreaming instead, and that was much better. If she concentrated very
hard, it was easy to imagine exactly what it would feel like to ride Nutmeg around the field again;

what it would be like to be so high up that you could look down at Mr. Welling's bald patch;
what the wind would sound like whistling around your ears. Janet had never told anyone, but
secretly she pretended that Nutmeg was stabled in her closet doors and fed her imaginary sugar
lumps. Sometimes she brushed the sleeves of her winter coat with a pretend brush and played at
grooming.
At Christmas, Janet's grandmother had given her a small china horse. “You're pony-mad,” she
said, “so thought you'd like this. Isn't it beautiful?”
“Yes,” Janet had said, and the horse was beautiful, even though it wasn't a bit like Nutmeg.
