Preface
Vehicle electrics and electronics are becoming more and more important in the modern motor vehicle. In addition
to the generally heightened safety requirements, customers are making ever increasing demands in terms of comfort
and convenience. Today, many functions are inconceivable without electronics. This is reflected in the significant
increase in the number of electronic modules in comparison to older vehicles.
In order to further increase their functionality and functional reliability, these systems are linked together via
comprehensive data bus systems. Individual system faults can influence several systems and consequently can be
very difficult to locate using conventional diagnostic methods.
In order to meet these increased requirements, the WDS (Worldwide Diagnostic System) has been superseded by
the new IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System) after six years of service.
The two-day IDS training course provides the user with an overview of the hardware, including the hardware of
the PTU (Portable Test Unit) CF-19 series, of FordEtis IDS and of the IDS Standard functions.
Completion of the eLearning program "Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS)" (TC101 1 021C) is a prerequisite for
the study of this Student Information.
This Student Information is based on the FordEtis IDS software version 1.714 and the IDS Standard software
50.00.200.
NOTE: The diagnostics software used is subject to continuous development. Depending on the software version
available, there could therefore be differences between the test procedures described in this brochure and the IDS
screenshots. Refer to Lesson 1 of the Student Information CG 8231/S for more detailed information about the PTU
CF-18 series.
Please remember that our training literature has been prepared for FORD TRAINING PURPOSES only. Repairs
and adjustments MUST always be carried out according to the instructions and specifications in the workshop
literature. Please make full use of the training offered by Ford Technical Training Courses to gain extensive
knowledge of both theory and practice.

The red and black terminal probe leads are needed for
measurements using the digital multimeter and

The connectors to the VMM are identical for both
terminal probe leads. The PTU indicates the correct
connection when setting up the digital
multimeter/oscilloscope. If the cables are connected
incorrectly, this is detected by the PTU/VMM and the
correct connection is indicated again.

Carrying case
The carrying case holds the VMM and all the testing
accessories. It contains separate compartments in which
the accessories can be tidily stored.
4. What should you bear in mind when updating the VCM driver software?
a. The VCM must be sent to the manufacturer to update the driver software.
b. The driver software is checked by the PTU every time the VCM is connected, and updated if required.
c. The driver software is updated automatically when the VCM is connected to the VMM.
d. The driver software is transmitted to the VCM by the docking station on a wireless basis. Updating takes
place automatically when required.
PTU
Before initial start-up, the PTU must be fully assembled:
1. Insert the battery.
– Do not touch the electrical contacts with your
fingers.
2. Attach the carrying handle.
3. Attach the stylus to the screen frame by means of
the securing cord.
4. Insert the USB hub into the USB port on the
left-hand side of the PTU housing and fasten using
the screw.
For further information on assembly, please refer to
"Panasonic operating instructions CF-19 series".
IDS cabinet
The cabinet can be suspended on a wall or mounted on
a workbench or on the WDS trolley.
The following criteria should be taken into account when
choosing where to set up the unit:
• good accessibility for all users,
• availability of mains and network connections
(wired/wireless),
• device manufacturer's safety instructions (no damp
rooms, potentially explosive areas, etc.),
• statutory occupational safety authority regulations
(minimum width of escape routes, etc.).
Two plug sockets are required for connection to the
mains supply.
Once a suitable location has been found, the IDS cabinet
must be assembled:
1. Install the DVD drive.
2. Install the power supply units for the DVD drive and
docking station/PTU, route the power supply cable
in accordance with the specifications, switch on the
DVD drive.
3. Attach the docking station to the support using six
screws.
4. Connect both power supply cables.
For detailed information on assembly, please refer to
the accompanying assembly instructions.

"Guided Diagnostics" is available for vehicles from
approximately model year 1999. In contrast to "Full

in any order. Diagnostics steps that are not required can
be omitted.
Vehicle identification is performed automatically (see The vehicle identified is then displayed and must be

1. The IDS provides vehicle-dependent "Full Diagnostics" or "Guided Diagnostics". What is the special
feature of "Full Diagnostics"?
a. With "Full Diagnostics", the user can skip test steps that do not correspond to the fault symptom.
b. With "Full Diagnostics", the user can perform individual diagnostic steps in any order and skip them if
necessary.
c. "Full Diagnostics" guides the user through all test steps in a predetermined, fixed sequence.
d. With "Full Diagnostics", existing faults can be skipped.
3. How are sessions that have been started but not completed ended correctly?
a. Clicking on the "End session" button and then "Complete" saves all current data and thus keeps it available
for later continuation of diagnosis.
b. Clicking on the "End session" button and then "Hold" saves all current data and thus keeps it available for
later continuation of diagnosis.
c. Clicking on the "End session" button and then "Delete" ends the current session and keeps it available for
continuation at a later date, if required.
d. Switching off the PTU stores all diagnostic data and keeps it available following a restart.
5. If a session is stored under "Complete", all movie recordings are also stored.
