Problem1: Drill String Design Example

Find the cheapest grade of 5” drill string that can be used to reach a True Vertical Depth of
13,000 ft. The BHA should include 25 drill collars 6 1/4” x 2 13/16” (82.6 lb/ft) each 30 ft
long.

Assume the following:

MW = 12 ppg
MOP = 100,000 lbs

Tension
Length of slips = 12”
Drill Pipes
Design factors = 1.125 (collapse)
Wp
= 85% (tension)

For slip Factor Fcp Fcp

Coefficient of Friction= 0.08

Compression
K=4.00
Drill Collars Wc

Problem 2: Length of Drillcollars for a given Weight on Bit (WOB)

The rate of penetration for 12 1/4” bit will be achieved when 30,000lbs WOB is applied.
If the bit is used in 10 ppg mud:

i. Calculate the weight in air of 12000 ft of 5” Grade E drillpipe with 19.5 lb/ft
ii. Calculate the weight of drill pipe in 10 ppg mud.
iii. Calculate the number of 6 1/4” x 2 13/16” drillcollar (30ft/joint) that would be
required to provide 30,000lbs WOB and keep the drillpipe in tension in 10 ppg mud.

Problem 3: d and dc Exponent

During drilling the 12 " hole section of a well the drilling data was obtained and given below.
i. Using d and dc exponent concept, check if and in what depth there is an overpressured
zone.
ii. Calculate the formation pressure at 10,000 ft based on Eaton’s equation.
Normal formation pressure = 0.465 psi/ft; overburden gradient =1.0 psi/ft; normal mud
weight for this area of 9.5 ppg.

DEPTH (ft.) ROP (ft./hr) RPM WOB (lbs) MUD WEIGHT PPG
9,500.00 150 120 40,000 9.5
9,600.00 100 125 40,000 9.5
9,700.00 70 130 45,000 9.5
9,800.00 80 130 42,000 9.5
9,900.00 60 100 40,000 10
10,000.00 37 120 40,000 10

Problem 4: Leak - Off Test

A leakoff test was carried out just below a 13 3/8" casing shoe at 8000 ft. TVD using 10.0 ppg
mud. The results of the tests are shown below. What is the maximum allowable mudweight
for the 12 1/4" hole section ?
BBLS PUMPED SURFACE PRESSURE (psi)
1 400
1.5 670
2 880
2.5 1100
3 1350
3.5 1600
4 1800
4.5 1900
5 1920

Problem 5: Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD)

The circulating pressure losses in the annulus of the previous well is 500 psi when drilling at
8500ft with 10 ppg mud, calculate the ECD of the mud at 8500ft.
