5. PROCEDURE

5.1 Plant and Equipment

The following plant and equipment will be required:
 Portable Sprayer
 Water Tanker
 Water Tank

5.2 Materials
The following materials will be required. For curing compound material below one or equivalent one can be
used:
Curing, sealing and protective membrane for concrete

 Hessian Clothes
 Polyethylene Sheet

5.3 Generic Curing Works

All surfaces of structural concrete shall be protected from loss of moisture by the implementation of a suitable
curing process immediately after compaction works. Freshly placed concrete will be protected from premature
drying and excessive cold or hot temperatures.

1.1.1.Curing Periods

Curing duration will be followed depends on concrete type as explained below;

 Concrete (only Portland Cement) : Minimum of seven(7) days after casting of which the first
five(5) days should be a moist curing system
 Concrete (using GGBS and PFA): Minimum of ten(10) days after casting of which the first
seven(7) days should be a moist curing system.

5.3.2 Curing Methods

Concrete curing methods can be summarized as below;

a) Moist Curing
For moist curing, concrete surface should be kept continuously wet by covering with cool
water. Water-fog sprays can be used for this purpose. Concrete surface will be covered
with specified absorptive cover such as Hessian Clothes and will be kept continuously
wet. 4-inch overlap will be arranged for absorptive covers to maintain full coverage of
concrete surfaces and edges. Particular care shall be taken by Contractor to prevent
thermal shock at the concrete surface due to intermittent application of large quantities of
water.

b) Moisture – Retaining Cover Curing

Concrete surface should be covered with moisture-retaining cover (0.125mm impermeable
polyethylene sheeting) for curing concrete. It will be placed in widest practicable width with sides
and ends lapped at least 3 inches and sealed by waterproof tape or adhesive. During curing
period if any holes or tears appear on the concrete surface due to using cover material or
waterproof tape, they will be repaired and rectified immediately.

c) Approved Curing Compound

Before anything else, using of approved curing compound (Masterkure181 or equivalent) is
subject to review and acceptance by Engineer. Membrane curing compounds have to be used
that will not affect surfaces to be covered with finish materials applied directly to concrete. Curing
compound will be applied as soon as final finishing operations are complete (within 2 hours and
after surface water sheen has disappeared). Manufacturer Technical Data sheets (as attached)
and manufacturer instructions are basic to apply curing compound material. Concrete surface
preparation and application will be in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

d) Combining Methods (a+b+c)

Curing formed or unformed surfaces will be followed by applying the appropriate above methods
or by combining of them. Exception for final cure concrete surfaces to receive finish flooring
should be cured moisture-retaining cover, unless otherwise directed by Engineer. In addition that
exposed external concrete surfaces up to the underside of baseplates (to cover the grout) shall be
primed with a low viscosity primer and coated with 2 coats of a light grey colored epoxy paint with
a minimum thickness of 125 microns per coat.

5.3.3.Site Curing Basics

ONYX GENERAL CONTRACTING CO LLC
Curing shall be conducted so that at no time during the prescribed period will the concrete lack moisture
and temperature control to permit full development of its potential strength and durability, so curing shall
commence immediately after final setting of concrete.
Designated crew or team (both shifts, day and night) shall be allocated for the purpose of water curing and
curing control which shall be continued as per relevant Specification and Method Statement.
As soon as the concrete has stiffened surface should be covered with Hessian clothes. Hessians should
be maintained continuously wet during required curing period and if necessary should be covered with
polythene sheet to prevent any hydration. If it is required wind barriers can be used around fresh concrete
to prevent strong wind, so in parallel fast surface hydration can be under controlled.
Water tankers and/or adequate water tanks shall be provided to site and adequately fitted with hoses to
reach all required areas of the work. Water tanker shall be assigned regularly to supply the water tanks on
site with sweet water. If approved curing compound will be used, suitable spray equipment should be
ready at site.
Concrete elements shall be protected from damage by use of measures appropriate to the location, size
and shape of element. Vertical and horizontal surfaces are both should be protected during the curing
period against heavy construction traffic, impact and abrasion, imposed loads such as crane or concrete
truck mixers.
