Location of the blade control handle

This diagnostic code is associated with the implement control handle position sensor (X-axis) for the tilt left and tilt
right commands to the ECM.

The position sensor is a PWM sensor that operates at a frequency of approximately 500 hertz. The sensor has an
operating duty cycle range of 3.5 percent to 96.5 percent.

This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads the signal from the X-axis (tilt left/tilt right) position sensor as
being above normal.

Pull-up Voltage

For sensor circuits, the ECM continuously outputs a "pull-up voltage" on the circuit for the sensor signal wire. The
ECM uses the pull-up voltage in order to hold the sensor signal "high" until the sensor forces the signal "low". This
results in a "cleaner", more stable sensor signal. When the ECM detects the presence of a voltage that is above a
threshold on the signal circuit, the ECM will generate a FMI 03 diagnostic code for the involved sensor.

For troubleshooting, when the sensor is disconnected from the machine harness, the presence of pull-up voltage at the
sensor harness connector will indicate that the wires from the sensor connector to the ECM are OK. The absence of
pull-up voltage at the sensor harness connector will indicate a possible open in the signal wire. If the voltage at the
sensor harness connector is higher than the pull-up voltage, the signal wire may be shorted to a +battery source in the
harness.

The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:

• The sensor power supply is open.

• The return circuit is open.

• The signal circuit is open or the sensor is disconnected.

• The signal circuit is shorted to a +battery source.

• The sensor has failed.

• The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.

Note: Ensure that CID 1079 FMI 03 is on hold.

Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear
the diagnostic codes when problem has been corrected.

System Response:

The diagnostic code will cause the blade control handle to stop functioning. The implements will be disabled while
the diagnostic code is active.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE DUTY CYCLE OF THE SENSOR SIGNAL

A. Turn the key switch and the disconnect switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

B. Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) (if available) to check the duty cycle of the position sensor. Go
to the "STATUS" and observe the percentage value that is given for the X-axis (tilt left/right) position sensor.

C. If ET is not available, use a multimeter that is capable of measuring a duty cycle in order to check the duty
cycle signal of the position sensor. At the connected ECM connectors, insert a 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe in
the back of signal contact J2-42 (wire H711-GN) and contact J1-56 (wire J765-BU).

D. With the blade control handle in the center position, record the duty cycle percentage value. Slowly move the
handle to the left and slowly move the handle to the right. Record the high and the low duty cycle values.

With the handle in the center position, the duty cycle should be approximately 50 percent. The high value should be
approximately 95 percent and the low value should be approximately 5 percent. The values should have increased or
decreased in a steady manner through the duty cycle range as the handle is moved to the left and to the right.

Results:

• OK - The duty cycle values are in the correct range and the increment and decrement of the signal is stable.
The position sensor operation is correct. Proceed to Test Step 5.

• NOT OK - The duty cycle values are not in the correct range or the increment and decrement of the duty cycle
is not stable. Proceed to Test Step 2.

Test Step 2. CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT THE SENSOR

A. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

B. Disconnect the 6 contact connector for the sensor from the machine harness.

C. At the machine harness connector for the sensor, measure the voltage between contact 1 (wire 709-OR) and
contact 2 (wire J765-BU).

Expected Result:

The voltage is approximately 10 DCV.

Results:

• OK - The voltage is approximately 10 DCV. Proceed to Test Step 3.

• NOT OK - The voltage measurement is NOT 10 DCV.

Repair: There may be an open in the machine harness or the implement drive train fuse may be open. Check
the fuse. Ensure that the fuse is not open. If the fuse is open, replace the fuse. Clear all diagnostic codes and
check to see if the diagnostic code is still active. If the code is still active, there is an open in the solenoid
supply circuit of the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

STOP

Test Step 3. CHECK FOR AN OPEN IN THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT

A. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the ON position.

B. At the machine harness connector for the sensor, measure the voltage from contact 3 (wire H711-GN) to
contact 2 (wire J765-BU).

Expected Result:

If the signal circuit and the return circuit for the position sensor are correct, the ECM pull-up voltage should be
indicated on the voltage measurement. The value of this voltage can vary. The pull-up voltage should measure
between 5.0 VDC and 15.0 VDC. A measurement of much less than 5.0 VDC indicates an open in the circuit. A
measurement of more than 15.0 VDC indicates a short to a +battery source in the circuit.

Results:

• OK - The pull-up voltage is present within the correct range. This indicates that the signal circuit and the return
circuit are correct. Proceed to 5.

• NOT OK - Very little or no voltage is measured. There is an open or a bad connection in the return circuit or in
the signal circuit of the sensor circuit.

Repair: There is an open or a bad connection in the signal circuit or in the return circuit. Refer to the complete
machine Electrical System Schematic. Check all harness connectors that are in the position sensor circuit for
corroded, loose or broken contacts. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

• NOT OK - A voltage that is higher than the correct range for pull-up voltage is measured. This indicates a
short to a +battery source in the machine harness. Proceed to Test Step 4

Test Step 4. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT

A. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position.

B. The 6 contact connector for the position sensor remains disconnected from the machine harness.

C. Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.

D. At the J1 and J2 machine harness connectors for the ECM, measure the resistance of the sensor signal contact
J2-42 (wire H711-GN) to all other J1 and J2 contacts.

Expected Result:

Each resistance measurement should be greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

• OK - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms.

Repair: The position sensor has failed. Replace blade control handle base. After replacement, calibrate the two
position sensors for blade tilt left/right and blade raise/lower. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Calibration". Verify
that the new handle base has corrected the problem.

STOP

• NOT OK - The resistance measures less than 5000 ohms.

Repair: There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between the signal circuit and the circuit with the
low resistance measurement. Repair the harness or replace the harness.

STOP

Test Step 5. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE

A. Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the any harness connectors that are disconnected.

B. Reconnect all harness connectors.

C. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

D. Clear all inactive diagnostic codes.

E. Operate the machine.

F. Determine if the CID 1079 FMI 03 is active.

Expected Result:

The CID 1079 FMI 03 is active.

Results:

• YES - The CID 1079 FMI 03 is active. The problem has not been corrected. The ECM may have failed.

Repair: Check the sensor circuit again. Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool, if
available, in order to perform a "Wiggle Test" on the machine wiring harness. The wiggle test can detect
momentary or intermittent shorts or opens in the machine wiring harness.If the cause of the problem is not
found, the ECM may be faulty. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership's Technical
Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If
the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control
Module (ECM) - Replace".

• NO - The CID 1079 FMI 03 is not active. The problem does not exist at this time.

Repair: The initial diagnostic code was probably cause by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the
harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.
