Circuit/System Description
The electronic brake control module (EBCM) supplies a 5 V reference and provides a low reference to the steering angle sensor. The EBCM
monitors the signal circuit and the three phase circuits to determine the steering wheel position. The EBCM receives a analog signal and
two digital signal inputs from the steering angle sensor. The analog signal is 2.5 V when the steering wheel is centered or within a few
degrees of the straight ahead position. The analog signal is used to track the first 225° of rotation in either direction. The EBCM
dynamically interprets the relationship between the Phase A and Phase B digital inputs, and determines the position of the steering wheel
and the direction of the steering wheel rotation.
Conditions for Running the DTC
The ignition is ON.
Ignition voltage is greater than 9 V.
C0710 0F
The steering wheel angle sensor detects an impossibly fast steering angle movement.
Diagnostic Aids
During diagnosis, park the vehicle on a level surface.
The snapshot function on the scan tool can help find an intermittent DTC.
Verify the steering wheel and steering wheel angle sensor is installed correctly.
The vehicle should not pull in either direction while driving straight on a level surface.
Verify the steering shaft coupling to the steering gear is properly installed and aligned.
Find out from the customer the conditions under which the DTC was set. This information will help to duplicate the failure.
During high humidity conditions, condensation from the HVAC system may cause this DTC. If this DTC is reoccurring or set as a
history code, inspect the steering angle sensor connector for water intrusion or corrosion.
Confirm that all tires are of the proper size and that all are matching brands. Check and adjust all tires to the stated cold air pressure
as identified on the tire placard. If a mis-sized or non-matching brand tire is present, inform the customer that in order for the vehicle
stability enhanced system to function normally, tires need to be a uniform size and rolling diameter.
To correct a fretting condition disconnect the suspect connector and add Nyogel lubricant 760G (dielectric grease) to both sides of
the connector terminals. Then reconnect the connector and wipe away any excess lubricant. This will correct the additional terminal
contact resistance due to the terminal fretting corrosion.

Circuit/System Verification
NOTE: If the condition is intermittent or cannot be duplicated, disconnect the connectors and add Nyogel lubricant 760G. This
procedure will correct the high resistance condition due to terminal fretting corrosion.
1. Ignition ON.
2. Verify the scan tool Steering Wheel Position parameter corresponds to the actual steering wheel position as the steering wheel is
turned through its entire range of motion.
If the parameter does not correspond with the steering wheel position or the reading is erratic
Refer to Circuit/System Testing below.
3. Verify the scan tool Digital SWPS Phase A parameter cycles between Low and High as the steering wheel is centered and then
turned through its entire range of motion.
If the parameter does not cycle between Low and High as the steering wheel is turned
Refer to Circuit/System Testing below.
If the parameter cycles between Low and High as the steering wheel is turned
4. Verify the scan tool Digital SWPS Phase B parameter cycles between Low and High as the steering wheel is centered and then
turned through its entire range of motion.
If the parameter does not cycle between Low and High as the steering wheel is turned
Refer to Circuit/System Testing below.
If the parameter cycles between Low and High as the steering wheel is turned
5. All OK.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the steering angle sensor. It may take up to 2 minutes
for all vehicle systems to power down.
2. Test for less than 20 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.
If 20 Ω or greater
If less than 20 Ω
3. Ignition ON.
4. Test for 4.8-5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
If less than 4.8 V
If infinite resistance
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the EBCM, ignition ON.
2. Test for less than 1 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 1 and ground
If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
If less than 1 V, replace the EBCM.
If between 4.8-5.2 V
5. Test for 4.8-5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 1 and the signal circuit terminal 6.
If less than 4.8 V
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the EBCM, ignition ON.
2. Test for less than 1 V between the signal circuit and ground.
If greater than 1 V, repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
If less than 1 V, replace the EBCM.
If between 4.8-5.2 V
If infinite resistance
NOTE: When measuring voltage at the steering angle sensor harness connector, the voltage values are based on a battery
charge of 12.5 V and the steering wheel is in the center position.
10. Test for 6.8-11.7 V between the signal circuit terminals listed below and ground with the steering wheel in the center position.
Terminal 3
Terminal 4
Terminal 5
If infinite resistance
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the EBCM, ignition ON.
2. Test for less than 1 V between the signal circuit and ground.
If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
If less than 1 V, replace the EBCM.
If between 6.8-11.7 V
