Why are Quotes important for the IAS Mains exam?

In this book, we have compiled quotes that are important from the UPSC
exam point of view. Quotes add a lot of value to your answers in the IAS
exam. Quotations can not only be used in Essay and Ethics papers but also
in other General Studies papers. This small book will help you in fetching
additional marks if you use these quotes properly.

You can use quotes for the introduction of essays. For example, you
can introduce an essay based on EDUCATION with the following
quote-
“If your plan is for one year, plant rice.
If your plan is for ten years, plant trees.
If your plan is for one hundred years, educate children. ”
-Confucius

In the same way, you can Conclude Education based essay with the
following quote-
"Teach to transform,
educate to empower and
learn to lead."

You have very limited time and space Ethics paper. So every word
matters. In such a case, you can paraphrase quotes and deliver more
content in a short space. For example, in questions related to
Kindness virtue, you can use the following quote-
"Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”
-Mark Twain

Quotes can also be used in other General studies papers. For

instance, to explain the importance of elections, you can mention
the following quote-
"The ballot is stronger than the bullet.”
- Abraham Lincoln

www.upscsupersimplified.com
5

For questions related to Fundamental Duties, you can use the

following quote-
There can be no daily democracy without daily citizenship.
-Ralph Nader

So try to memorize quotations and score more marks. However,

follow the following rules-

● Don’t use more than two quotes per essay. The use of many
quotes may show a lack of your own ideas and content.
● Never change the text of quotes. If you don’t remember exact
words, you can paraphrase the quote. But then do not mention
the name of the author/ thinker.

I appreciate the valuable feedback from readers for further

improvements. Please feel free to contact at gjsontake@gmail.com or
