THE SHRI RAM SCHOOL, MOULSARI

PRESENTS

SHRI MUN ‘ 24

31st JULY – 2nd AUGUST

DIPLOMACY: A DOUBLE EDGED SWORD
WHAT IS SHRI MUN?
Welcome to the 2nd edition of interschool ShriMUN!
Shri MUN, has consistently been one of our most highly
anticipated annual events, growing in both scale and
participation each year. Students from all grades
enthusiastically take part, and this experience never fails
to bring out the best in them—be it through
impassioned speeches, innovative crisis resolutions or
impressive paperwork—all crafted within the demanding
three-day, high-pressure conference environment.

Shri MUN as a platform gives students the

chance to come together, articulate ideas and
learn from each other. It has helped students
emerge as problem solvers, thinkers, and
leaders. We at The Shri Ram School,
Moulsari aim to provide an opportunity for
deliberation and diplomacy which helps
young delegates take a step towards becoming
world leaders.

Our wide range of committees gives participants the

chance to put themselves in the shoes of current leaders,
to change history as well as define the future and
diplomacy in International Relations. The theme of
ShriMUN 2024 is Diplomacy: A Double Edged Sword.

We want to ensure that every student has the

opportunity to be a part of something bigger
than themselves and work together along with
their fellow delegates to solve the most pressing
global issues. We look forward to a conference
filled with enriching debate, critical thinking,
and negotiation; all with the idea of a better
future in mind.
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The idea of diplomacy being a double-edged sword is counterintuitive. In an ideal

world, governed by international law, diplomacy should be a weapon that is wielded to
resolve even the most intricate of conflicts, and address even the most complex issues
confronting humanity. It was enshrined in the principles of the United Nations as the
factor necessary to maintain peace, but one may now argue that it is becoming the
very thing threatening this peace. Have we been failed by diplomacy and diplomatic
endeavours? Is the work of the United Nations promising a truly sustainable future?
Can geopolitics really be simplified to a binary problem?

At the 2nd edition of ShriMUN, we urge students to pose these questions to the adults
who have acted as the custodians of the world that they will inherit. We aim to place
students in the world of diplomats, to experience the intricacies of global politics, and
realise for themselves the inner workings of the sub-organizations of the UN. Model
UN, I believe, is the stepping stone for students to gain such an insight, and those who
engage with its workings, understand its limitations, but realise its indispensability, are
quite bluntly, the only hope for us. But most importantly, they ask themselves, Is
diplomacy just a double-edged sword? Or is this issue more complex and requires a
deeper engagement which we hope the delegates will immerse themselves into.

COORDINATOR’S MESSAGE

"Diplomacy is the art of letting someone have your way." - Daniele Vare

With great anticipation and enthusiasm, I extend a warm welcome to each one of you to the second
edition of our Inter-School Model United Nations (MUN) conference. This year, our conference
theme, "Diplomacy, a Double-Edged Sword," invites us to delve deeper into the intricacies of
international relations and the power of dialogue in resolving global challenges.

In a world marked by complexity and uncertainty, diplomacy stands as a crucial tool for navigating
the intricate web of international affairs. At its core, diplomacy embodies the art of negotiation,
compromise, and dialogue in seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts and fostering cooperation
among nations. It is indeed a double-edged sword, capable of both bridging divides and
perpetuating tensions. Throughout history, we have witnessed the transformative impact of
diplomacy in addressing some of the most pressing issues facing humanity. One notable example is
the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, where intense diplomatic negotiations between the United States
and the Soviet Union helped avert a catastrophic nuclear confrontation and paved the way for arms
control agreements in the subsequent years. In a world increasingly characterized by
interconnectedness and interdependence, dialogue serves as a catalyst for building bridges, fostering
mutual understanding, and finding common ground amidst divergent interests.

As delegates of this MUN conference, you have the unique opportunity to step into the shoes of
diplomats and statesmen, grappling with complex issues and negotiating solutions in the spirit of
collaboration and cooperation. I encourage each of you to approach this conference with an open
mind, a spirit of diplomacy, and a commitment to seeking innovative solutions to the challenges we
face. Together, let us harness the power of dialogue to chart a course towards a more peaceful,
prosperous, and sustainable world for present and future generations. I look forward to engaging in
fruitful deliberations and witnessing the transformative impact of your diplomatic efforts.

SECRETARY
GENERAL’S
MESSAGE
Greetings Delegates, Representatives and Visionaries,

I look upon MUN as a game, a game which you wouldn’t know how good you’re at until you’ve played it
yourself. A game of strategy, knowledge, and dialogue. A game you improve at, the more you play. The
adrenaline rush one feels while playing becomes addicting, making you want to play more and more. This
is how diplomats are made.

I, Harshiet Nanda, am proud to announce the second edition of interschool ShriMUN from 31st July,
2024 - 2nd August, 2024. We, at The Shri Ram School, Moulsari understand the importance of MUN in
the 21st century. Hence, we host ShriMUN in hopes to establish a conference that underscores the
importance of being an informed citizen. This provides each delegate a stage to display their oratory,
diplomatic and research skills. At the end of the day, no matter how loud you are or how smart one may
be, the best delegate is always someone who is able to effectively communicate with the rest of the
committee.

This year the theme of ShriMUN is Diplomacy: A Double-Edged Sword. Diplomacy has been seen as a
solution to worldly problems since before the United Nations and the League of Nations were established.
Diplomacy is the very reason why we’re able to co-exist in this world. The negotiations, peaceful relations
and this cooperative system, nothing would exist without it. Yet, we tend to overlook the major flaws in
this ideology. Diplomatic stances of world powers remain a key reason for ongoing war. The inability of
nations to take quick actions, make decisions, and speak up remains the cause bloodshed, inequality, and
destruction. Diplomacy disregards what is morally correct and incorrect, rather it makes decisions based
on commercial benefit. Hence, we would like to shed some light upon this “Double-Edged Sword”.

Throughout the years, I have always encouraged people to try MUN, and this time is no different. That is
why I hope to see many first timers this year at ShriMUN. The variety in committees’ choice allows each
delegate to pick a committee which helps them to truly showcase their skill. This year at ShriMUN we
look forward to take trip not only around the world, but also into the future in hopes of solving problems
faced by society.

Quoting Jurgen Klopp, “When you agree on a common idea and work towards it together, you can create
something special.“ So let the game begin.

Harshiet Nanda, Secretary General ShriMUN 2024

MESSAGE FROM THE
SECRETARIAT
Dear delegates and esteemed faculty members,

We are proud to invite you all to the 2nd Edition of inter-school ShriMUN. This
conference is our school’s most action-packed flagship event. We offer a platform for
delegates to portray their mettle of debating and deliberate on problems around the
world and issues within India. At ShriMUN this year, we are providing delegates across
the world, a forum to excel in the field of debate and diplomacy. The theme for this
year’s conference is “Diplomacy, a double-edged sword”, which stands self-explanatory
with respect to the state of geopolitics in contemporary times.

Diplomacy works differently in theory and practice. Diplomacy is essentially a political

activity and to be well resourced and skilful, are major ingredients of power. Its chief
purpose is to enable states to secure the objectives of their foreign policies without
resorting to force, propaganda, or law. It is able to achieve this mainly by
communication. Together with balance of power, which it both reflects and reinforces,
diplomacy is the most important institution of our society of states.

From 31st July to 2nd August, we hope to provide a high-octane conference at the Shri
Ram School, which centres around conflict resolution and delegates engage in dialogue
for a fruitful experience. Diplomacy, debate, extensive research, strategizing, arguments,
stipulation, negotiation, and allegations are only the tip of the iceberg for ShriMUN
2024. Whether it is working towards India becoming a developed nation by 2047 or
working on pure creativity and diplomacy skills by going in 2030 and finding
environment related solutions to current world problems or going back in history to
find solutions for the crisis in Kashmir- all of them will give you an inquisitive bent of
mind about the dynamics of world scenario.

We look forward to seeing you as delegates in ShriMUN 2024, representing your

countries, dealing with on-the-spot sitch, combatting issues, and endeavoring to find
solutions to the challenges that the world is facing. See you soon!

closely with its 193 member states and other stakeholders to galvanize worldwide
commitments and supports them to achieve SDGs. The UN’s 2030 agenda is universal,
transformative and rights based. From widespread ignorance, the UN has generated
global understanding. The discussion of this agenda seeks to prove the power of
