A10. Hatching
Section B – Identification and Classification
A1.(a) Pupa
A1.(b) Pupa or Chrysalis stage
A1.(c) Metamorphosis refers to the complete transformation
that occurs during the butterfly lifecycle, which
involves clear stages with major changes in form
and function.
A2.
 Larve stage of rhino beetle: 6 - 12 months.
Larva stage of ladybug: 2 - 4 weeks.
Rhino beetle larva lives in soil and decaying wood.
Ladybug larva are found on plants.

Rhino beetle feeds on decaying plant matter.

Ladybug larva feeds on tiny insects.

Adult rhino beetles are large with horn like structures and feed
on nectar and fruits. Adults ladybugs are smaller and brightly
coloured and feed on garden pests.

REPRODUCTION
Answer: The stages of the frog lifecycle are as follows:-

1) Egg – The eggs are laid in water in large clusters called spawn.
2) Tadpole – The tadpole resembles a small fish with a tail.
3) Tadpole with legs – The tadpole starts to develop legs in this stage.
4) Froglet – The tail becomes short and the legs become long in the froglet
stage. It loses its gills and the lungs start to form.
5) Adult frog – The adult frog has fully developed legs and no tail.
Answer:

The tadpole is aquatic with a long tail and gills for underwater breathing,
while the adult frog has lungs for breathing air and limbs for jumping and
swimming.

The tadpole mainly consumes algae (tiny water plants), whereas the adult
frog eats insects.
Answer:

Factors such as water quality, temperature, availability of food, and

presence of predators can affect the survival and growth of frog eggs and
tadpoles. For example, polluted water can slow down egg development, and
a lack of food can slow the growth of tadpoles.
Answer: The frog population would likely decrease due to the
contamination.

Chemicals could harm the eggs, prevent proper development of tadpoles,

and reduce the survival rate of adult frogs. Contaminated water can lead to
deformities (imperfection in stages of their life cycle) and increased death
rates.
Answer:

Understanding the life cycle of frogs can help in identifying critical stages
that causes risk to environmental threats. Conservation efforts can then
focus on protecting breeding sites, ensuring clean water sources, and
providing habitats that support all life stages of frogs.
Answer:

Amphibians are important for maintaining ecological balance. They control

insect populations, serve as prey for various predators, and their presence
indicates a healthy environment.
Sample Answer: The frog's life cycle includes a tadpole stage, which is
aquatic, allowing it to make full use of pond habitats rich in food and
relatively safe from predators.

As it matures into a frog, it becomes terrestrial, accessing a different set of

resources and avoiding aquatic predators.
Sample Answer: If a butterfly's habitat is destroyed, the larvae may lack
access to host plants needed for development, leading to decreased
survival rates and reduction in population.
Sample Answer: Both butterflies and frogs undergo metamorphosis, but
butterflies have a four-stage life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, adult), while frogs
have three stages (egg, tadpole, adult).

Butterflies' metamorphosis involves a complete transformation, whereas

frogs gradually develop adult features. These differences influence their
nature roles, such as pollination help by butterflies and pest control help
by frogs.
