6/1. Daily routine

I am a studetn, som y daily life is quite simple on an aerage weekday. My daily routine mostly
focuses on my classes and sutdy.

I am a heavy sleeper, so I must set the clock for a particular time. In fact when I wake up, I
need some time till I regain my senses and I am wide awake again. For some minutes I can’t
really focus on my actions, I just fiddle around.

In school days I have to get up at around half past 5. But it is also necessary that my parents
wake me up, because sometimes I can hardly hear the alarm clock ring. It has already
happened to us, the whole family overslept.

Then I go to the bathroom. I wash my face in cold running water so that I will be wide awake.
I cleen my teeth, comb my hair and begin to get dressed.

I have breakfast at about 6 o’clock. In generally my father gets breakfast ready. As a rule, he
gets up earlier than me and by the time I sit down the table he has prepared some sandwiches.
In our family we like having a big breakfast. We usually start with ham and eggs, or
scrambled eggs, or fried eggs, or sausages with bread or rolls. After the breakfast I like to
drink a mug of cold milk. My parents don’t allowed me to leave without breakfast. After the
breakfast my parents always dink coffee. My mum also makes a sandwich that I can take to
school.

We leave the house at quarter to 7, in order to avoid getting stuck in the rush-hour traffic.
Ususally my parents take me to the town by car. In the city center I and my sister get out of
the car, and then we have to take a bus, which takes us to school. We have to catch bus
number 11.

I arrive at school at around 7:15, so I often meet soem of my classmates in front of the school.
Lessons start at 8 o’clock. On an average day I usually have 7 or 8 lessons a day. They are 45
minutes lond with ten-minute breaks. Our lessons finish at about half past 3.

After school I have to catch a bus to go home. I arrive home at around 3:30, so I can have my
lunch quite late. I usually eat something that my mum cooked. I don’t want to eat in the
school canteen. The food there is often tasteless and cold. My mother does the cooking in our
family. She is an excellent cook. My favourite food is stuffed cabbage, but I also like tomato
soup and layered potatoes.

1
After my lunch I relax a little, and then I sit down tod o my homework and to prepare for my
lesssons for the next day. I study for 3 or 4 hours, I never finish studying until 9 or 10 in the
evening. During the afternoon I often chat with my friends about the homework, or we just
discuss what happened in the school.

At about 7 o’clock my family have dinner together, which is either the left-over from lunch or
some sandwiches. At dinner we discuss what happened during the day.
On some day if I have free time, I help to do the siches or help with some other housework
after dinner. However in generally after dinner, I have to continue studying.
In the evenings I like listening to music, playing computer games or chatting with my friends.
Besides this I spend some time using the Internet or I enjoy watching series, or football mach
on TV.
Finally I go to bet at 11 p.m. This is my daily routine with some minor changes. For example
on Fridays I go out with my friends. We go to a shopping center, watch a film in a cinema or
go to a pub.

Weekends, holidays:
At the weekends or during holiday I do not follow this routine. I feel more relaxed. At
weekend it is not necessary to get up early so I sleep as long as I can. At the weekends
without alarm clock I weak up around 8 o’clock.
Also I can do whatever I want in my free time. Of course I need to help my parents around the
house, but I have most of the time for my interest.
On Saturdays and Sundays my daily routine includes watching movies, playing computer
games, or hanging out with friends. I can go to the cinema or go to a concert with my friends.
After that we have lunch with my family and in the afternoon we visit relatives together. In
my opinion weekends are much better than weekdays.
However, when we have lots of tests next week, I get up in time also at weekend. After
getting up I preparing for the next week’s lesson till midday.

I think my life is always full of activities and duties so I never feel bored. Sometimes it’s too
much during the week. Many times I feel tired and exhausted. Therefore I would like to find
some ways to escape this daily routine. I sometimes feel that I need a break. For example I
would like to go to a gym and work out more. Unfortunately I can’t do that. I’m ususally so
tired that I don’t have energy or mood to work out.

Different places to eat

- whether you prefer eating in a restaurant or at home and why,

- describe your favourite place to eat out,
- whether fast food restaurants or traditional restaurants are more populat in your
country.

Food is a very important need in life. You must eat something but you can decide what you
want to eat. Many people cook and eat a meal at home Others choose to go to a restaurant.
They feel that preparing food is a waste of time. In my opinion, both of them havo some
advantages and disadvantages.

2
If you eat out, you can save a lot of time and energy. You don’t have to go anywhere to buy
the ingredients such as vegetables, spices, rice, meat or fish. You don’t have to spend time
preparing the dishes or washing up after a big family lunch. Everything is ready for you so
you can simply order the meals that you like. Restaurants offer delicious meals and you can
choose from a variety of menus including foreign ones. Usually you couldn’t prepare these
foods at home on your own. Moreover, restaurants have a peaceful atmosphere with nice
bacground music. They offer good service.

On the other hand, eating in a restaurat is not alway a nice experience. You prepare food with
great care at home and choose fresh ingredients but some restaurants don’t buy fresh stuff. It
may happen that the owners want to make more profit so they buy low quality ingredients.
Another possible risk is if the dishes, cutlery, cups and bottles are not properly cleaned.
Eating out usually costs a lot of money, especially for a whole family.

Considering all these facts I prefer to eat at home. I like home cooked food. In my opinion, it
is healthier than eating out. I have smaller portions and I eat more fruit, vegetables and low-
fat products at home. Although on some special occasions like birthdays or New Year we go
to a restaurant. We have a favourite place to eat out, it is a small family run restaurant, called
Green Tree. I go to this restaurant with my family. They serve delicious Hungarian food,
some Italian dishes like spaghetti and lasagne, and they sometimes have special menus. The
range of dishes and the prices are reasonable (ésszerű, méltányos). This restaurat has a nice
parking area and they also have an open area with a garden. The interior and the decoration of
the building are attractive. They have light colours, paintings ont he wall and a nice
arrangement of furniture.

I often go to fast food restaurants especially when I have time only for a quick meal. I think
fast food restaurants are popular. Many children and teenagers are keen on hanging out in fast
food restaurants. Often whole families go there to sit down and order a full meal. They are
popular because you can usually find one near your home. In addition, fast food is cheaper so
it is a good choice if you are looking for a quick, inexpensive meal. In spite of all these
(mindezek ellenére), I don’t think it is a good idea to visit these places regularly. Fast food
meals contain fried, salty foods full of saturated fat. Nowadays there are some healthy options
available on fast food menus.

To sum up, both eating at home and eating out in a traditional or in a fast food restaurat have
good and bad things about them. They satisfy different needs. I suppose your choice depends
on what you are looking for when you want to eat.

6/4. Ételek, kedvenc ételek

Different types of food
Fő szempontok:
- healthy and unhealthy food,
- advantages and risks of eating healthy or junk food,
- your eating habits.

It is important to have a healthy diet. This means that we have to make sure we get the right
kinds of foods and drinks. A well balanced diet should contain three main groups of food. The
first group is carbohydrates. We can find them is foods like bread, potatoes and rice. These
foods give us energy. The next group is proteins which are usually found in milk, meat and

3
fish. They are essential for the human body because they help to build new cells and repair
old ones. The third group includes fats which give us energy but not as quickly as
carbohydrates. We can’t stay totally away from eating fattening foods such as fast food, pizza
but is’s a good idea to reduce the amount of fat that we eat.

Besides these foods we need vitamins and minerals. We need to pay attention to what we eat
and should find a balance. We should eat a variety of foods from the basic food groups: plenty
of grain products, fruits and vegetables, less meat, fewer dairy products, and only a small
amount of sweets and fat.

Unfortunately these days it is not always easy to eat healthy food. Mass-produced
(tömegtermék) food is often full of chemicals, preservatives [prizörvativsz] (tartósítószer),
artificial colours (mesterséges színezék), and artificial flavours (mesterséges ízfokozó).
Another problem is that people are busy and don’t have time to cook their own food.
Therefore they choose partially prepared food or ready-to-cook food that we can also call junk
food. This way people save time because it doesn’t take hours to prepare lunch. In fact junk
food is often tasty and delicious. What’s more it doesn’t cost a lot of money. However, junk
food contains a lot of sugar and salt. So eating a lot of it is may cause serious health problems
such as obesity [óbisziti] (elhízás), diabetes, and heart disease.

I try to eat healthy therefore I follow some rules. For example I have breakfast every morning
because it gives me energy and helps me think. I drink plenty of water, tea or green tea,
sometimes fruit juice. I also eat vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, carrots, and
tomatoes. I try to choose some fresh fruit every day. Babanas, peaches and strawberries are
my favourites. When I eat meat I rather have fish or white meat such as chicken or turkey
instead of red meat such as beef. I try to limit sweets and fizzy drinks that contain a lot of
sugar. I must admit that I love fast food, for example hamburger and French fries but I only
eat them three or four times a month. I hope that if I continue a balanced diet, it will help me
to live a healthy life.

Typical Hungarian dishes

Fő szempontok:
- the characteristics of traditional Hungarian food,
- some typical meals from Hungary,
- foods people normally eat on big holidays,
- an everyday meal from Hungary and how to prepare it.

Hungarian cuisine [kuzin] (konyha) is well-known and we are proud of our national dishes.
First of all, Hungarian food is often spicy because of the use of hot paprika powder. Other
typical ingredients in Hungarian food are onions, potatoes, cream, thick sour cream, garlic,
black pepper and a variety of herbs (fűszernövény) including parsley [parszli] (petrezselyem)
and celery [szalari] (zeller). In my opinion, Hungarian people don’t eat in a healthy way
because Hungarian food contains too much meat (mostly pork or beef), bread, noodles, a lot
of fat and spices instead of fresh vegetables and fruit.

There are quite a lot of Hungarian national dishes such as stuffed cabbage, meat stew, paprika
chicken with sour cream and dumpling, goulash soup, fish soup, Újházy chicken soup,
Hortobágyi stuffed pancakes. These traditional Hungarian dishes are based on meats, seasonal

4
vegetables, dairy [dejri] (tejtermék) products and they are often served with small dumplings
(gombóc). Other commonly served side dishes are noodles, potatoes, and rice. Hungarians
also prepare many different kinds of sausages. Other typical elements of Hungarian cuisine
are some pastries (cukrászsüti) and cakes for example strudel filled with apples, cherries, and
poppy seed, stuffed pancakes or Dobos Cake which is a kind of sponge cake filled with
chololate butter cream, with a thin layer of caramel on the top. Hungary is also famous for its
wines, above all the sweet wines of the Tokay region or the red wines of Villány.

On special occasions people eat traditional Hungarian specialities. For example, at Christmas
many families prepare fish soup or some other fish dishes, roast goose or roast turkey as well
as stuffed cabbage. Other common Christmas food is a kind of pastry roll (bejgli) filled with
walnut or poppy seed. On New Year’s Eve Hungarian people usually cook Vienna sausage,
and lentil [lentl] (lencse) soup. Easter meals also have a few specialties such as cooked
smoked ham with hard-boiled eggs, horseradish (torma) and Easter bread.

One of my favourite Hungarian dishes is stuffed green peppers (töltött paprika). Its basic
ingredients are rice, green peppers, onion, butter, minced meat (darált hús), egg, salt and
pepper, and tomato sauce. First you need to boil some rice in a little water. Then you havo to
fry the chopped onion in butter and mix it with meat, rice, egg, salt, and pepper. After that you
have to cut off the top of the peppers, lift out the seeds and fill the peppers with the meat
mixture. After boiling the tomato sauce you can add the stuffed peppers, cover the pan and
cook it for about an hour. It is not very comlicated to prepare this dish but it is very delicious.
It is only one of my favourites. In general I can say that I love most Hungarian foods because
they are tasty and mouth-watering (ínycsiklandó). In my opinion, nothing compares to a well-
prepared Hungarian dish.

Dishes for special occasions

Fő szempontok:
- the importance of food on special occasions,
- what food is associated with Christmas,
- what special foods you eat on other holidays.

The year is filled with special events, national and religious holidays. In addition, we all have
important moments and memorable days in our lives. We call these special occasions. Food is
an important part of these occasions. We often celebrate significant days with special foods,
such as birthday and wedding cakes or some traditional dishes. In Hungary people eat
Hungarian specialities on special occasions.

One of the most important celebrations is Christmas. At Christmas many families prepare fish
soup or some other fish dishes. Goose is also quite popular. Roast goose is often stuffed with
apples and prune (szilva) or sweet chestnuts (édes gesztenye). It is also traditional to eat roast
turkey stuffed with chestnut. Many families prepare stuffed cabbage too. There ara some
common Hungarian Christmas treats and cookies too. One of them is walnut (dió) or poppy
seed (mák) roll which is called ’beigli’. It is a kind or sweet bread filled usually with poppy
seed but is can be filled with walnut too. One of the most famous Hungarian Christmas sweets
is a candy called ’szaloncukor’ that is often hung on the Christmas treee as decoration. It is
made of fondant; it is covered in chocolate and wrapped in shiny colourful paper. Then, there
are the cookies which are made with honey and spices. They are similar to gingerbread.
(mézeskalács) They have different shapes and they are decorated with white or colourful
icing.

5
New Year’s Eve is another time of the year that is associated with some traditional food. If
you want to have a great new year, you should start it with a lucky meal. Traditionally, eating
pork on New Year’s Day is supposed to bring good luck. People also cook lentil soup because
lentils symbolize money and wealth. Hungarians avoid eating chicken and fish on New Year’s
Day, because chickens can ’scratch’ away your luck and fish can swim away with your luck.

Easter meals also have a few specialties. People who follow Christian traditions eat fish on
Good Friday. On Easter Sunday meat dishes are served such as cooked smoked ham with
hard-boiled eggs, horseradish (torma) and Easter bread. Of course chocolate Easter eggs are
also a part of the Easter diet.

In Hungary, foods are closely linked to other celebrations as well. On birthdays, name days
families or friends often get together and have a big meal. I can’t imagine a party without
food either, because parties always include food and beverages. Food also has a social
function at banquets, family meals, and funerals. There are many occasions when eating
together helps us form and maintain relationship with others.

Different meals of the day

Fő szempontok:
- how many meals Hungarian people have each day,
- what people typically eat for these meals,
- when and where you usually eat your meals,
- what you generally have for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

In Hungary people generally eat three times a day. The main meals are breakfast, lunch and
supper. Some people, especially those who live in the country, usually have a large breakfast.
It typically consists of fresh bread or a toast with butter, cheese, eggs, cold cuts, ham, bacon
or sausages and vegetables such as green peppers, tomatoes, radish, or cucumber. People
prefer hot drinks for breakfast. Adults usually drink tea or coffee; children drink tea, milk or
cocoa. Some people eat a lighter breakfast for example a cup of milk, tea or coffee and some
kind of pastry or rolls with honey or jam or cereals.

Lunch is the main meal of the day. It consists of several courses. Sometimes appetizers are
served, then soup. The main dish following the soup is usually a meat dish with cabbage,
potatoes or noodles. Salad is rarely served as a main dish, people rather eat it as a side dish
with the meat dishes. Most Hungarian meals end with something sweet. Popular sweets
include pancakes, dumplings, or a dessert like a cake, puddig or strudel. Traditionally all the
family has lunch together at home at the weekends. On weekdays many children have lunch
in school cafeterias, while working people eat either in a canteen, or in a restaurant or fast-
food restaurant.

Some people and children eat a light meal in the afternoon. It may be a bun (zsemle), a small
sandwich and some cold drink or some fruit and biscuit. Dinner is a less important meal than
lunch. Generally this is a one-course meal. Sometimes people eat leftovers (maradék) from
the noon meal or some soup with bread. In some families dinner is similar to breakfast.
Usually it is a sandwich or a plate of cold meats, cheese, vegetables and eggs. Before each
meal, hungarian people wish their friends or relatives a good appetite, at the end of a meal,
they express thanks to their host who wishes them good health.

6
Own meals of the day
I have breakfast at about 6 o’clock.
My mother usually put some sandwiches at school. She put som butter, cold cuts and cheese
in it.
Then I eat when I arrive home in the early afternoon. I usually eat something that my mum
cooked. I have lunch quite late, at about 3 o’clock but I don’t want to eat in the school
canteen. The food there is often tasteless and cold. My mum cooks delicious food. I usually
have pork or chicken with pasta, rice or potatoes. Sometimes we have stew (pörkölt). But my
favourite food is spaghetti with cheese and pizza. For dessert I like to eat ice-cream or
pancakes. Later in the evening I eat only a light dinner before going to bed.

6/6. Gyakori betegségek, sérülések, baleset

Illnesses and health
Fő szempontok:
- common diseases in your country,
- how often you are ill,
- the last time when you were ill and what your symptoms were,
- what you do to keep healthy.

There are some quite common illnesses nowadays. In winter and spring for example a lot of
people suffer from the flu or catch a cold They have symptoms such as sore throat, headache,
fever, nausea [nózie] (hányinger), and vomiting (hányás). In summer and autumn a lot of
people suffer from allergies. They have a runny nose, scratchy throat, itchy and watery eyes
(viszkedő, könnyező szemek) and they sneeze (tüsszög) a lot. Other frequent illnesses include
stomach problems, bronchitis, ear ache or pneumonia. Adults often have a stressful life which
can lead to insomnia, headaches, depression or backache.

There are som other diseases which are more common among children. For example it is
typical to get chicken pox as a child. The signs of chicken pox are rashes and blisters which
are very itchy. Usually, if you’ve had chicken pox as a child, you don’t get them again.
Children may also get mumps or measles (kanyaró) but these are not so common.

Both children and adults get hurt easily. They can cut their finger, get bruised (zúzódás),
sprain (rándulás) their ankle or break their leg. Therefore it’s useful to know how to give first
aid, how to treat a wound or how to make a bandage.

I’m usually quite healthy. I try to keep fit, I have a healthy diet and I take vitamins. I’ve never
been seriously ill and I haven’t been sick for a long time. Of course I sometimes have a few
aches and pains or catch a cold like everyone else. When I catch a cold, I always have a
headache, maybe fever, a bad cough, a runny nose and I feel weak and dizzy (szédül). The last
time when I had a heavy cold was about 6 months ago. I had the usual symptoms: a blocked
and runny nose and sore throat. For a few days I felt poorly but soon I was over the worst of it
and I got well again.

7
When I am ill I always see my GP for a check-up. The doctor usually asks me about my
complaints, takes my pulse, temperature or blood pressure, examines my throat and listens to
lung sounds. Then he gives me a prescription which I take to the chemist’s. To be honest I
don’t really like medicine, expecially antibiotics. So if it is possible I only take vitamins, or
painkillers. If I have flu for examplle, I just stay in bed for some days, keep warm, drink a lot
of tea with lemon and take some vitamins and fruits.

I personally think that if you want to stay healthy, you should live a healthy life. You have to
eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, limit oil and fat in your diet and drink penty of liquids every
day. If you have a healthy lifestyle you can prevent different diseases. If you have a strong
immune system and a healthy diet you won’t get ill easily.

Dangerous addictions and their bad effects

Fő szempontok
- what the most dangerous addictions are these days,
- why drugs, cigarettes and alcohol are harmful,
- some common but less dangerous addictions
- what could be done to stop people from damaging their health

Many people have some kind of addictions. They are formed quite easily but it is very hard to
get rid of them. Many people who want to change aren’t able to do so, no matter how hard
they try. Smoking, drinking, drugs, gambling, overeating are all examples of addictions.
These addictions are incredibly harmful.

I think taking drugs is the most dangerous addiction. Young people try drugs out of curiosity.
Their role models such as famous pop stars, actors and actresses also take drugs and set a bad
example. Drugs are extremely addictive (függőséget okozó). If you start using them you get
into an incredibly difficult situation. I think it is almost impossible to give up drugs without
professional help. If someone takes drugs they will have a very weak immune system and
have a lot of serious mental and health problems.

Drinking is maybe as dangerous as taking drugs. As far as I know, alcohol is as addictive as

drugs and cigarettes. Drinking is particularly harmful for young people. Drinking alcohol
regularly can lead to liver decease [diszíz] (halál), heart attack and other fatal diseases as well.
I think it is alarming that younger and younger people start drinking alcohol.

Smoking is very harmful, yet, nowadays many teenagers get addicted to it. Often friends or
classmates push each other into smoking. Maybe they start the habit because their friends also
smoke, or because they see smoking as a sign of maturity [maturöti] (érettség). It can be very
difficult to give it up. I think most people smoke cigarettes simply out of habit not because
they like the taste of it. Maybe they feel good while they are smoking. However, nicotine can
make them apprehensive [eprihenszív] (nyugtalan), tired, nervous, and moody (rosszkedvű) as
well. Smoking has many bad effects: it causes heart disease and heart attacks, increases your
blood pressure and you can have asthma or even lung cancer.

There are other things that can be addictive such as chocolate, tea and coffee. Drinking coffee
is harmful too, but it’s also helpful for some people who have low blood pressure. Of course
these products can be unhealthy but in general I would say that these addictions are less
serious and dangerous.

8
There is one addiction I actually can’t stand. I hate when people smoke next to me, into my
face. I get really upset when I see a pregnant woman or a mum with a very small child
smoking a cigarette. I think it’s just awful.

I’m not sure what could be done to help people with addictions. I think laws or regulations are
ineffective. There are some bans (tilalom) but they don’t make people give up smoking and
drinking. The problem is that the production of cigarettes and alcoholic drinks is a very
profitable business. I’m not so sure about drugs. In my opinion, drug dealing should be
strictly punished. If someone uses drugs, they should receive compulsory treatment or
something like that. Maybe it would be a good idea that could work.

Healthy lifestyle
Fő szempontok
- things people can do to keep healthy,
- what part diet plays in staying healthy,
- if physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle,
- if Hungarian people have a healthy lifestyle.

Nowadays more and more people try to have a healthy lifestyle. In my opinion it means not
only physical health but also mental health. So, health lifestyle is not only about a good diet
and exercising. It’s also important how you spend your time, how well you sleep, how you get
on with people, and also what kind ot attitude you have.

I think the first step to living healthy is to have a good attitude. It’s much better if you are an
optimist, have a positive attitude to things and set goals in life. You should try to make the
right decisions for yourself. Healthy relationships are also a very important part of health. If
you have strong relationships you will have more chance of a long, healthy, and happy life.

A healthy lifestyle means eating healthy and nutritious food. You should eat some grains
(gabonaféle), fruit, vegetables, dairy products, lean meats (sovány hús), and helathy oils and
fats. A good diet consists of a healthy drinking diet. A healthy person should drink about 2
liter of water a day. A good diet can help a person live a long healthy life. Another thing
anyone can do is take multivitamins. There are vitamins and minerals which can improve your
immune system and protect you from many common illnesses. On the other hand, eating the
wrong food, or simply over-eating, may lead to obesity and other health promlems such as
diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

However, a healthy diet alone is not enoug. If you want to stay healthy you should do sports
or fitness activities. They help to keep in shape and keep away from illnesses. You should do
some exercise every day even if just for an hour. You can go on walks, do push-ups and sit
ups at home or do some stretching. Exercising can improve your mood, release stress,
strengthen your body and prevent disease.

Sleeping well is another part of healthy life. Sleep has many benefits. It can help to revitalize
your body, improve your memory, reduce your stress level and it can lower blood pressure. In
contrast, if you do not have enough sleep, you cannot concentrate well the next day and the
quality of your work will get worse. Also, you may feel moody and more irritable.

In my opinion, Hungarian people don’t really have a healthy lifestyle. First of all, traditional
Hungarian dishes are definitely not for people on a diet. Our dishes are a bit too heavy and

9
fatty. We can always hear in the news that fat is not good for us. Also, nowadays in Hungary
there are many foods, that we can buy already cooked and simply put in a microwave. They
are not healthy either. Some people think fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats are much
more expensive therefore they often buy cheap and unhealthy food.
As I have said daily exercise is also vital. In my opinion, most Hungarian people are not keen
on doing sport. It’s true that schools have introduced physical education every day. Yet, I
think only a minority (kisebbség) of students do sport actively. Most of them spend hours in
front of the television or computer and don’t get enough exercise.
