Quarter 1 : Week 6

“Multiplies mentally proper fractions with Denominators up to 10. “

This module was developed for learners to understand and hone the important learning skill of
M5NS-Ig-91: Multiplies mentally proper fractions with Denominators up to 10 integrated with
S5FE-IIIa-1: Describe the motion of an object by Tracing and measuring its change in Position
(distance travelled) over a Period of time.

After learning this self-learning module, the learners are expected to achieve the following
objectives:
• Multiplies mentally proper fractions with Denominators up to 10 integrated by describing the
motion of an object by Tracing and measuring its change in Position (distance travelled) over a
Period of time.

Read the story below:

Shane is driving 2 hours going to her work using her motorcycle. In the first hour she travels ½
km and in the second hour she travels ¾ km. What is the total km did Shane travels for 2 hours?
In solving problems involving multiplying mentally proper fractions with Denominators up to 10
, study the 4 steps to solve proper fractions with Denominators up to 10.

Step 1: Find the Given

First hour = ½ km
Second hour = ¾ km
Step 2: Multiply the Numerators
1×3 = 3
Step 3: Multiply the denominators
2×4 = 8
Step 4: Express the answer in lowest term if needed.

Quarter 2 : Week 9
“Finds the missing term in a pair of equivalent ratios”

This module was developed for learners to understand and hone the important learning skill of
M5NS-Iii-126: Finds the missing term in a pair of equivalent ratios integrated with S5MT-Ih-i-
4: Design a product out of local, recyclable solid and/ or liquid materials in making useful
products.

After learning this self-learning module, the learners are expected to achieve the following
objectives:
• Finds the missing term in a pair of equivalent ratios from a product out of local, recyclable
solid and/ or liquid materials in making useful products.

Explore and Discover!

Read the given situation below.

Students are asked to design a pencil holder using recyclable materials found in their local area.
They are given the following ratios of materials:
• Ratio of paper to metal: 6:?
• Ratio of cardboard to plastic: 8:12
Find the missing terms in each ratio to ensure they use the right proportions of materials.

When finding the missing term in a pair of equivalent ratios, it’s important to remember that
there are various methods to determine the unknown value. You can either multiply or divide to
complete the equivalent ratio.
In ratios, the order or sequence is considered. The amount mentioned before the word to is
always the numerator or the first element in a ratio. The amount after the word to is always the
denominator or the second element in a ratio.
In solving problems involving finding the missing term in a pair of equivalent ratios, study the
steps below:
Step 1: Do the cross multiplication of known values. Start by cross multiplying the numerator
and denominator that you know.
3/5 = ?/10 3×10=30

Step 2: Divide the product by the remaining known value. In this case,
Divide 30 by the remaining term of 5. The answer, 6 , is the unknown term.
30÷5=6

Step 3: Check your answer by doing the cross multiplication. If the results are equal, you know
your answer is correct.
3/5 = 6/10 (3×10=30) ; (5×6=30)
Since the products are the same, then the answer is correct. The missing term in the ratio is
indeed, 6.
