PET CITY LITERATURE STUDY

Methodology : RELATION SIGNIFICANCE OF COMPANION ANIMALS OVER THE AGES

The importance of the human-animal bond has been documented throughout history, across
cultures, and by recent research. However, the bond we share with our pets has been
underappreciated in the field of mental health. In recent years, researchers have demonstrated the
benefits of the human-animal bond and promoted the use of therapeutic programs.

Ancient people valued the bond between humans and animals. The animal was worshiped by
indigenous peoples. According to a 2,500-year-old Chinese legend, Buddha summoned 12
creatures under the Bodhi tree, taught them their strengths and weaknesses, and sent them out into
the world to guide people. In ancient Chinese belief, all humans are born with essential animal
characteristics, which are associated with their date of birth. Archaeological evidence shows that
humans domesticated wolves and wild cats 14,000 years ago.Their intelligence, intuition, and
loyalty are highly valued. They were equal partners in hunting and fishing.

Animals were considered sacred.Animal burials in ancient Greece and Rome demonstrated the
importance of animals as human companions. These animals were buried with their human
companions along with blankets and food.Egypt's animal cemeteries are animal burials that are
almost as solemn as human burials. In ancient texts, dogs are mentioned as guides to the afterlife,
and cats as a protective force against the sun.In later years, as civilization progressed, dogs and
cats became so valued that they even had servants of their own.Pet dogs were popular as
comforters.Animals were bred to form unique breeds that symbolizes royalty.Only wealthy people
owned pets.

ANIMAL WELFARE THE PROBLEMS FACED BY THE ANIMALS

Animal welfare refers to the welfare of individual animals. This well-being is based on the
animal's needs, adaptability, and stress. Health is an important component of happiness, but
happiness is a much broader concept than just health.
HOMELESSNESS
Animal welfare can be defined as:
● Needs-based - Animals' needs to maintain health and well-being are essential to their
welfare.
● Adaptation-based – physical and psychological aspects of adaptation to the environment.
● Stress-induced – Frequent and prolonged stress affects the health of animals.
● Emotion-based - Feelings of safety and comfort determine animal welfare.
ABUSE
If an animal's behavior shows aggression, fear, or lack of social behavior, the animal is not in a
happy state.Happiness can also be determined by your actions.Significant changes in the behavior
of animals have been observed as they try to adapt to their environment. In fact, behavior is the first
means of assessing an animal's ability to adapt to a situation or environment.Animal welfare aim to
provide all the basic needs for the well-being of animals.

Needs for Animal Welfare

STARVATION
Needs recognizes that animals are sentient and represent an important part of the ecosystem, and
that animal welfare is important, especially when used as food, animal experiments or as pet.It is
based on the recognition that it should be taken into consideration. For many years, animal habitats
have been occupied by urban settlements, resulting in a "pet overpopulation." There are two main
factors that affecting the overpopulation of pets.Breeding and owners who can no longer keep their
pets.Millions of dogs and cats are euthanized in animal shelters each year because there are more
pets than responsible homes. To control overpopulation, animals are spayed or neutered at rescue
centers and veterinary clinics. DISEASES

SHELTER ANIMALS RECORDED EUTHANIZED ANNUALLY Do animals need us ?

Animals have the right not to be used by humans or to be considered property. Their rights mean
they must be given a good life and a dignified death. Although animals have the right to live freely
without human intervention, some animals prefer to live with humans.

There are many questions regarding animal welfare. Some of these are common among people
who have owned pets. Most people don't know the rest because they have no experience with
animals. Some of these problems are the result of historical traditions that have been safely
practiced for centuries. These activities include bullfighting, dogfighting, and cockfighting. At the
other end of the spectrum are issues where modern agricultural techniques conflict with current
animal welfare theory. Examples of this include sow housing, pig parasites and health problems on
modern organic farms, battery layers and some broiler farms, some broiler houses, salmonella
problems on modern free-range poultry farms, and dairy cows. Examples include welfare. In other
words, welfare issues exist for every species that humans seek to manage. This article concludes
that questions about animal welfare may never end. The more you try to solve it, the more problems
you may create. This does not mean that we have to ignore these problems and tolerate cruelty, but
sometimes happiness means changing ourselves, changing our way of life, abandoning the

traditions that tortured and killed many animals.

Euthanasia of pets is usually done by injecting a lethal drug. Your veterinarian may first administer a
sedative to help the animal relax. The injection is usually painless, but your dog may feel a slight
sting. After the effects start, you may feel dizzy temporarily, but there is no pain at all. Your pet will
lose consciousness within seconds and will no longer feel pain or suffering.

Covid-19 and the condition of animals in india: Interest in purchasing/permanently adopting a pet among non-pet owners during the
coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2021, with a forecast for 2022 and 2023
Case A: Why abandoning pets increased during covid ?

The emergence of coronavirus (COVID-19) has led to major changes in the protection and
welfare of animals around the world. Many incidents of harassment and abuse of animals of various
nature have been reported in India recently. The biggest impacts on animals during the virus
outbreak are starvation and cruelty to stray animals, abandonment of pets due to people's
misunderstandings, unconditional abandonment of animals in pet shops, veterinary facilities and
pet food shortages. It's insufficient.

Pet abandonment is a huge problem that has arisen during this pandemic.According to People for
Animals (PFA), around 15-20 pets are abandoned every day in Delhi alone.Despite evidence that
animals do not spread the coronavirus, pets are being recklessly abandoned across India and
abroad. In some cases, dogs, cats and tigers have tested positive for the virus. The situation is
made worse by pet owners' fear and neglect.Household elders may want to abandon their pets for
fear of infection.

There are other cruel incidents where animals are brutally beaten with hard objects such as
sticks. Although these offenses are punishable under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals Act 1960, a number of incidents of a similar nature have been reported. PETA is calling for
necessary action to be taken on this issue. Advertisements providing misleading and false
information that caused people to abandon their pets have been criticized by authorities including https://www.statista.com/statistics/1236734/interest-in-buying-or-adopting-a-pet-among-non-pet-owners-in-the-united-states/

FALINE:
● Cats are also called domestic cats or domestic cats. TYPES OF CATS :
● It is a carnivorous mammal that belongs to the cat family and has a smaller body than a
normal dog.
● Cats have been domesticated (domesticated) for about 10,000 years.
● These are derived from the African wild animal Felis Silvestris libyen, and he is one of the
most popular pets in the world.
● Cats were probably originally bred to eat mice, and this is still their main purpose on farms
around the world.
● Then they were retained because they were friendly and good company.

Size – Domestic cats have smaller skulls and shorter bones than European wildcats.
● Length – 46 cm (18 inches) from head to torso. https://petdirect.co.nz/blog/all-about-cat-fur-types-patterns

STANDARDS ACCORDING TO TSS:

Introduction

● In general, dog kennels should be built in a location with well-drained soil, adequate
protection from cold winds in winter, and the possibility of cool breezes in summer.
● Having a few large shade trees around the kennel is a real must.If possible, you should avoid
building a kennel that will disturb your neighbors by barking at night.
● This type of dog house consists of two main parts. There is an area where the dogs live and a
work room where food is prepared and dogs are washed and groomed.

Kennel Layout

● The floor plan in Figure.1 shows a very simple kennel with four departments. It's nice to have
a small kennel this size near your home to house a sick pet or raise a few puppies.
● It Includes stove, two washing tubs, table and food containers as shown on the drawings.
Each compartment opens into a dedicated cement yard and these yards all open onto a
large lawn yard to the rear .
● These compartments are 5 feet by 5 feet and are spacious enough for dogs of all breeds up
to setters.fig.2 represents a very convenient arrangement for private or commercial dog
kennels •
● The number of compartments that can be built is unlimited. If you have dogs of different
breeds, you can make the compartments on one side larger than the other. Fig.1
● Allows heat to be carried from the work area to the living room.A solid bulkhead can be
installed across the building below the fourth section.
● The first part is heated and contains eight compartments for hospital use.
● The remaining compartments have no heating. In addition to a cupboard for bedding, food
and coal, the workroom also has a stove, sink, washing machine and table. Of course, a
medicine cabinet is a must-have item and should be included in every dog kennel, large or
small.
● The plan in Figure.3 shows a slightly different arrangement of the working space of the rear
kennel, with an open walkway between it and the main body of the kennel.
● Keeping the doors open at both ends of this passageway allows air to flow freely at all times
and prevents small children from circulating inside the kennel.
● There were two large cupboards for bedding and food.To use it as a hospital, her one wing of
the compartment must definitely be heated. If this cannot be conveniently done from the
boiler in the working area, you can install small heaters on the wings themselves.
● The size of this plan is unlimited, the only drawback is that the northern section is not
equipped with a cement place, since it is cold in winter. However, these compartments can
always be used with the Nursing Pen.

THE WORKROOM
● This is equipped with a stove, hot and cold water, and a sink. You'll also need suitable
containers and cupboards for food and bedding, as well as a large, well-stocked medicine
cabinet.
● It is best to have a floor that can be washed thoroughly every day and has a drainage hole https://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/guide-for-the-care-and-use-of-laboratory-animals.pdf
in the middle. Most kennels usually require a large, sturdy table on which the dog can be
placed for trimming, grooming, etc.
● The work area should have a laundry tub with a divider in the middle for washing and rinsing
the dog. This is always useful in all kennels for all purposes.
● When using raw meat, a refrigerator and a meat grinder to mince the meat are very
helpful. Many odor kennels use one of the many types of canned meat on the market, which
are the most satisfying and economical in the long run.
COMPARTMENT
● The size of the compartment or living space for the dog depends entirely on the type of
animal/breed kept. In either case, for convenience, these plans use 25 sq ft compartments.
But of course this can easily be changed without affecting the plan at all.
● The larger the room, the more comfortable your dog will be and the more space they will
have to run around. But this doesn't have to be an exaggeration, as you need to get plenty of
exercise outdoors
● A 25 sq ft room is sufficient for all species up to setter size, especially if he keeps only one
dog in each room.
● Each living room should lead to a small concrete yard where the dog can run at any
time. Also, all of these concrete yards should open to a large grassy yard where the dogs can
exercise together or separately if needed.Of course, this also brings with it the problem of
fighting, but that is a question of kennel training and must be decided by the owner himself.

ACOUSTIC DATA

GENERAL ACOUSTIC DESIGN PLANNING

● Acoustic site planning is the placement of buildings on a site to minimize the effects of noise
by taking advantage of the site's natural shapes and contours. Open spaces, non-residential
land uses, and barrier buildings may be located to protect residential areas and other
noise-sensitive activities from noise, and residential buildings may be located to avoid noise.
● Acoustic architectural planning integrates noise reduction concepts into individual building
details. Architectural aspects include building height, room layout, window placement,
balcony and garden design.
● The layout of the buildings on the site can be used to minimize noise pollution. Acoustic site
planning is often a successful technique for reducing noise pollution when incompatible land

● Program / Use / Building Function: Community and Support Center, Transport Center,
Medical Center – all for Pets and focused around adoption and fostering.

The first building of its kind, the Pet Resource Center represents a revolution in the pet care
industry. By intentionally eliminating kennels and cages, its function is similar in many ways to an
animal shelter, but its basic philosophy is the exact opposite. They are using data to build
infrastructure to transport animals from overpopulated areas of the country to underserved areas,
and to protect animals from kennels and cages that negatively impact their health and behavior.
Rather than locking her up in the city, she is placed in a local foster home.

Instead of being hidden away on the outskirts of the city, this building is centrally located and easily
visible and accessible to everyone. It is home to a medical center for temporary animals and local
rescues, a community center with engagement activities for local residents, and a support center
for all foster parents and animals.Events like Crochet with Kittens, Foster Fridays and Adoption
Saturdays help them connect with the community and make them role models for future centers
around the world.

Pet Café TRYST / Parallect Design

ANIMAL SHELTER, RENOVATION SHANGHAI, CHINA

This pet cafe is located in the famous Tianzifang commercial area in Shanghai, with only a narrow
door leading to the street, the main space for use is on the 2nd and 3rd floors. This is not a
commercial space design.typical commercial but a project to renovate an old housing area.pets are
the main users of every space on a daily basis. The goal of the design was to provide a comfortable,
playable space for pets and provide a cooling space for guests.

The second and third floors were originally a simple space with very rough walls, not a pleasant
living space for pets.During the design process, four ladders were added to the space to create a
new way for pets to climb from the second floor to the third floor. In the following procedure, one of
the feed scales will be overridden in case the space is too full.On the wall are many kennels and
ladders for pets to play. The original window was also remodeled into the shape of a pet house, and
the decorative lights also had a cat shape to maintain the overall image of the pet house.European
ash wood is used as the main material throughout the space.

for customers. At the same time, the round holes between the remaining seats are designed for pets

Because the connecting ladder creates 3 large holes on the 3rd floor, it can be dangerous to
customers' lives. So we designed alcoves that float in the air to remind customers that there is
something below and also to prevent them from entering the hole.

small boxes" combination. From a human perspective, these models are feasible. But as anyone
who has ever owned a dog knows, sometimes dogs are happy to meet other dogs, but humans are
unhappy because they get scared. Therefore, dog-to-dog encounters should be avoided as much as
possible at unnecessary times. Thus, at the beginning of the program, the development of the porch
was avoided and there was a certain gap between the independent style and the townhouse style.

Architects pursuing perfection almost pursue the constructive logic of spatial forms, that is, this
type of frameless construction does not want to appear in the initial design of columnar structures in
straight frames goods that are best throughout the design.slab structures (hates beams and
columns and is obsessed with thick slabs, a unique hobby of architects and I don't know when it
started). The vertical shear walls and diagonal roof panels form a box-like, multi-layered “panel
frame,” as proposed by the original structural consultant, Zhang Zhun.Although perfect, this
non-aligned structural system requires high requirements for design and construction, as well as
consideration of protruding parts of the structure from construction drawings, which is
time-consuming and not necessary.cannot always be done.Given that I was not taking the job of a
“small spiritual building” where Ma Yin did not care about time and costs, but a commercial building
where time and costs were important, I was hesitant.and abandoned the so-called extreme pursuit
of architects.and choose the hidden frame structure, use the small overlap of the upper and lower
boxes to find the position of the frame column, and then use architectural methods to let the
column blend into the lower cavity space. The above-ground frame is only structurally modified at
the basement roof slab level.

Kennels / Atelier GOM ground and first floor plan : Paw Pets Spa / Office AIO

SPA, ANIMAL SHELTER , BEIJING, CHINA

● Architects: Office AIO
● Area: 126 m²
● Year: 2022
● Principal: Tim KWAN

Office AIO supports humane spaces for pets.As pet ownership increases, how can we
comprehensively address animal welfare? When Paw Pet Store reached out to Office AIO, the team
reimagined how a commercial store could use space planning to talk about caring for our little
companions.Located in a residential regeneration development in Beijing, Paw occupies a corner
of an existing single-storey building facing the street.Office AIO turns a former executive office into
a retail store that sells, cares for, and feeds pets, from quick check-ins to temporary “hotel” stays.

A Human Shop: 4,444 pets are real customers. For Office AIO, the pet store is not a simple place to
exchange pets.It is inhabited by animals, which have their own comfort preferences.Although
industry standards tend to place pets on facades behind glass, they tend to attract innocent
nuisances from passersby.Drawing from this common practice, Office AIO strategically places pets
away from the exterior facade and inside full-height, multi-story glass volumes. It protects them from
unnecessary looks with electromagnetic glasses and treats animals like “real” store customers, not

The design connects with peaceful nature throughout the space to maximize comfort. The ceiling is
covered with scrap wood panels that give the place an organic texture while also absorbing sound.
He took advantage of the single-story location, opening the top with skylights to bring in more
natural light.Earthen slate floors add outdoor accents to the interior.A muted color palette was
chosen to help cats and dogs, who can only see limited colors, distinguish between the outside
world and Paw as their special destination.Blue terrazzo flooring was chosen to highlight the store's
main program. For exhibition areas, hotels and spas, beige Corian is used for ease of maintenance.
Wooden tables and counters add a warm feel to the common areas.

Rework traffic to reduce resistance.Despite their small footprint, the team carefully mapped the
movements of dogs and cats respectively, thereby minimizing antagonism that could arise between
species. Each species has its own territory within the store, including a different entrance, reception
and grooming booth. Both respective areas have check-in counters at either end of L-shaped
cantilevered desks, designating different reception areas at the front without affecting the efficiency
of staff behind.

inference:

● Momentary freedom is very important here, since the architectural element is a spacious
place.
● When designing the hospital, emphasis was placed on both ventilation and accommodation
structure.
● The land does not contain grass because the landscaping element has not been
implemented.
● Many other spaces are implemented in this design, including an administrative block for
animal and visitor registration, and a canteen.
● Services are well organised.
● In order to attract more visitors, I would like to design a space that resembles a playground.
● The ceiling which is wrapped up in earthenware pots plan and the brickwork shaping jali
design acts as great aesthetics.
