CAM

KDM (PRPC15)- JAN 2024 2

CAM

• A machine element with reciprocating, oscillating or rotating

motion used for imparting a reciprocating or oscillating
motion to another machine element (follower) by direct
contact is called a cam

• Cam may remain stationary, translate, rotate whereas follower

may translate or reciprocate and oscillate

Elements of Cam Mechanism

• A driver member, Cam

• A driven member, Follower

• A member for supporting cam and to guide follower, Frame

Cam and Follower mechanism belongs to category of higher pair

According to the shape

• Knife-edge follower
• Roller follower
• Mushroom follower

According to location of Movement

According to Movement

Terminology

KDM (PRPC15)- JAN 2024 13

Motion of the Follower

• Angle of Ascent: angle through which the cam turns during the time the follower rises
• Angle of dwell: angle through which the cam turns during the time the follower
remains stationary at the highest or the lowest position
• Angle of descent: angle through which the cam turns during the time the follower
returns to the initial position
• Angle of action: total angle turned by the cam during the time, between the beginning
of rise and the end of the return follower

The follower, during its travel, may have one of the following motions.
1. Uniform velocity,
2. Simple harmonic motion,
3. Uniform acceleration and retardation, and
4. Cycloidal motion.
