Solution:
1 2 1 1
det B = (−1)1+1 · + (−1)1+3 · = −2,
2 1 1 2
which implies that
det B5 = (det B)5 = (−2)5 = −32.

Proof :
det (PAP−1 ) = det P · det A · det P−1 = det A
6. (Practice) Let U be a square matrix such that UT U = I. Show that det U = ±1.
Solution:
det I = det UT U = det UT det U = (det U)2 = 1 ⇒ det U = ±1.

Solution:
det AB = det A det B = −2,
det B5 = (det B)5 = 32,
det 2A = 24 · det A = −16,
det AT A = det AT det A = (−1) · (−1) = 1,
det B−1 AB = det B−1 det A det B = det A = −1,
det A−1 = (det A)−1 = −1.
8. (Practice) Solve the following system of equations using Cramer’s rule.

x + y − z = 6, 3x − 2y + z = −5, x + 3y − 2z = 14.
Solution: x = 1, y = 3, z = −2.
