iv
What I Need to Know

What is social science? Is it synonymous to humanities and natural science? What

are its disciplines? To fully understand this field of study, this module will help you
identify the nature and functions of social science disciplines and differentiate it from
other fields like natural sciences and humanities.

It is therefore a “must” for you to know the basic knowledge of the different fields of
Social Sciences. Learning the importance of this field in your daily life can make you
a more productive citizen. Only through deeper understating of its concept and
application can make you learn best as a Senior High School student.
After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Differentiate the nature and functions of social science disciplines with the
natural sciences and humanities,

2. Compare and contrast the two branches of sciences (natural and social
sciences) based on given categories and realities; and

3. Appreciate the relevance of Social Sciences in our daily life.

What I Know

Direction: Read each item carefully and write your answers on your notebook.

Test A. Read carefully the situations presented below. If it is a concept of social

science, write SS and if it is not, write NSS

1. Jack examined about how ants propagate and multiply.

2. Mario surveyed about how students of Himamaylan National High School take
care of the environment.
3. Anna decided to be exposed in one of the tribes in their community.
4. Ruffa examined his friend’s lungs and found out that the latter has lung cancer.
5. Christine managed his constituents well and became a good leader to them.

Test B. Analyse the situation below and decode the mystery that is enchanted within
the story. Answer the questions that follow.

Long time ago, three enchanted islands exist in a place called “WonderLake”:
A. Isla Humango, the biggest one, is full of stories and enchantments. Every creature
living in the island had his own unique experiences, with rich in art and music.
The island is given a unique language and writings, the other two islands were
not. Stories among WonderLake were all written in the stones of the island’s main
port. They also have their own unique ways to worship their God, a divine
creature named “Aba-ba”. The island also believed to be rich in enchantments
such as black magic as well.
B. Isla Nahango, the middle island, is home to millions of creatures. Every creature
is living on his own and is not controlled by any being, with each creature
independent from each other. There are many species that could be found in the
island alone, from their fauna to fiona. The middle of the island is a vast tropical
forest where these creatures lived. Humans who happened to visit the island had
seen vast array of creatures that is new to the human eye, hence became the talk
of the town.
C. Isla Pahango, is the youngest and farthest of the three, located at the southern
tip of the group. Every creature coexists with each other, and is influenced by
interactions made with every creature. Every creature living in the island
maintains their good relationship. The first community in WonderLake believed
to be in this island, and in which civilization begins. Diversity of creatures as well
as their behaviour and characteristics are found in the island, yet they are united
with a central. Their offices as well as agencies are on this island.
WonderLake now is in dilemma of what lies on every island. What is the mystery
behind each island?

1. Which of the said islands is inhabited by humans?

A. Isla Humango and Isla Pahango C. None of the Above
B. Isla Nahango and Isla Pahango D. All of the above

2. Which of the said islands is good as object of study about creatures and their
uniqueness?
A. Isla Nahango B. Isla Pahango C. Isla Humango

What island do you think focuses on the said realities? Choose among the three
islands above and write the letter of your answer on the space provided.

3. Human Experience _____________

4. Natural Creatures _____________
5. Human Interactions _____________

Lesson

1 Social Science is?

What is Social Science? This question leads us to a realization that we need to know
the basic of Social Science being a student of HUMSS. This module will present to
us the realities and characteristics of Social Science as a distinct study linked to
Humanities and Sciences, as well as the reasons why we cannot separate these
concepts.

TEST B. Write as many words as you can that you think are related to:

Social Sciences Natural Sciences Humanities

1. What are the similarities between Social Science and Humanities? Social
Science and Natural Science?
2. Can you say that Social Science is Natural Science or vice versa? Why?
3. Can you separate Social Sciences from Humanities? Explain briefly.
What is It

SCIENCE
L. scientia, ‘to know’, ‘to study’

Science is generally understood as an endeavour to understand, explain and predict

the world we live in using distinctive methods of enquiry in an attempt to construct
theories. Traditionally, science is defined as an organized body of knowledge acquired
from careful study, observation or experimentation.

SOCIAL SCIENCE
L. socius, ‘ally’, ‘companion’ + L. scientia, ‘to study’

Refers to the systematic study of various aspects of human society. This is a major
classification of educational fields related with civilization and the interactions
among people in a society. According to ESRC (2015), the social sciences speaks of
matters concerning the world beyond our experience and aids in elucidating how our
society works. The term “social science” first appeared in the 1824 book An Inquiry
into the Principles of the distribution of Wealth Most Conducive to Human Happiness
by William Thompson (1775 - 1833).

NATURAL SCIENCE
L. natura, ‘nature’ + L. scientia, ‘to study’

Refers to the disciplines that deal only with natural events (i.e. independent and
dependent variables in nature) using scientific methods (ledoux, 2002, p. 34). While
the employment of scientific methods is generally regarded as typical but not
exclusive of natural sciences, it is the focus on natural events that distinguishes
natural from social science.

HUMANITIES
L. studia humanitatis, ‘study of humanity’

Refers to the study of the way humans manage and sort out and record their
experiences. According to Stanford (2015), to understand and record the world, we
have used philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language.
REMEMBER THIS!

HUMANITES, the idea of examining and celebrating the human side of our
social existence, enters our discussion!

 We have on one hand, an empirical and objective approach to human existence

and, on the other hand, an imaginative, creative and “humanist” side of social
analysis.
 Disciplines of Social Sciences related to humanities are: HISTORY,
ANTHROPOLOGY (including archaeology), and LINGUISTICS for it deals with the
human past and touch the meaning of being human, which makes the whole
exercise border abstraction and subjectivity.
 Social Sciences related to empirical research and aims are the following:
ECONOMICS, SOCIOLOGY, PSYCHOLOGY, POLITICAL SCIENCE and
DEMOGRAPHY.
 Social Science, however, cannot be wholly categorized as exclusive to empirical
study or humanistic concerns because they can be both!

Direction: Read the story of Arnold and analyse the situations being presented in
the story.

Arnold is a social scientist in nature. He resides in a community that is highly

populated. However, he started to wonder how to resolve the dilemma that they

Case Analysis
Read the story below and analyse the situations being presented in the story.

The class of 2019 of Himamaylan National High School finally decided to take a trip to
Batanes. They have the mission to introduce the islands after the trip to the class.
However, during the trip, they had discovered that people in the island are less prone
to the virus as well as other communicable infections compared to the other places in
the country. As a matter of fact, they recorded zero case for more than two months.
With this, they choose to expose more to the island and immerse to the people and
write an article about this achievement of the province.
From the situation given above, answer the following questions:

A. Give at least one situation that can be resolved using Social Sciences.

Direction: Read each item carefully and use your notebook to write your answers.

TEST I. Analyze whether there are concepts of social science in the following
situations or not. Write SS if it has or NSS if it has not.

1. Juan, a doctor, examined how the deadly virus spreads.

2. Marie conducted a study by surveying the townsfolk about their stand against
modernization.
3. John wanted to immerse with the Mangyan tribe to study their ancestral culture.
4. Maria, after having scanned the brain of her friend, found out a cyst and
concluded that that an operation is needed.
