Skills

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards Patterns and Algebra

B. Performance Standards Demonstrate knowledge and skills in patterns and algebra (linear equations and
inequalities in one and two variables, linear functions, systems of linear equations, and
inequalities in two variables; exponents and radicals, quadratic equations; inequalities;
functions; and polynomials and polynomial equations and functions).

C. Learning Competencies/ Objectives Knowledge:

Write the LC code for each.  Illustrate rational algebraic expression
(LS3MP-PA-PSE-JHS-27)
 Perform addition of rational algebraic expressions (both with the same
and different denominators)
(LS3MP-PA-PSE-JHS-34)
 Perform subtraction of rational algebraic expressions (both with the
same and different denominators)
(LS3MP-PA-PSE-JHS-35)
 Represent real-life situations using rational
 alg·e·braic expressions (LS3MP-PA-PSE-JHS-36)
amount of work done per unit · speed per unit

Skill: Perform the given tasks individually, by pair and by group.

Attitude: To perform the addition and subtraction of rational algebraic

expressions

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Springboard/Motivation Real or Not
(Establishing a purpose for the lesson)
Directions: Look at the following pictures and tell which of the following
objects is real or not real.
B. Activity Pre-Test
(Review of previous lesson/s or presenting the
new lesson)  Learners will answer the pre-test questions using the worksheets.

Directions: Circle the letter of the correct answer.

C. Analysis Let’s Try This Out (Group Work)
(Presenting examples/instances of the new
lesson) Divide the class into 4 groups. Give each group a worksheet and let them do a
brainstorming to warm the class about rational numbers.

You went with your sister around the barangay to show her more
applications of mathematics in every day life. Now that she is more familiar
with variables and polynomials, help her represent each scenario with a
mathematical expression using variables for the missing values.
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new Let’s Learn!
skills (sub-activity #1)

Why is studying rational numbers important?

It is important to study rational numbers to know the distance to be run, time
taken to run the distance, number of participants in a race, coming first or
second or third, number of heart beats you take every minute etc., are all
rational numbers. Using rational expressions and equations can help you
answer questions about how to combine workers or machines to complete a
job on schedule. A “work problem” is an example of a real life situation that
can be modeled and solved using a rational equation.

E. Abstraction Ask
(Making generalizations about the lesson)
 What is rational expressions?
 How do we add and subtract rational numbers with the same
expressions?
 How do we add and subtract rational numbers with different
expressions?
 Why is it important to study rational numbers or expressions?

F. Application Engage
(Developing mastery)  Let learners answer the different questions below.
Activity 1
Directions: Add or subtract the given rational expressions. Write your answers
on a separate sheet of paper.

Activity 2

Directions: Apply the indicated operation to the given rational

expressions. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper
G. Valuing (Finding practical application How will you apply rational numbers or expressions in your daily life routine?
of concepts and skills in daily living)
H. Evaluation Directions: Solve the following word problems using rational expressions.
(Assessing learning) Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. Item 1 serves as an
example.
