40 Years on -
40 Countries
T his year 2014 marks the 40th anniversary of my first meeting with Mr
Bowen in 1974 in Adelaide, South Australia where he invited me to train
with him and document and eventually teach his original procedures.
From this first simple handshake with Mr Bowen 40 years on we now have
over 100 accredited instructors with Bowtech/Bowenwork practised in 40 different countries. Our animal arm
Equine Muscle Release Therapy and CCMRT is practised in 12 countries. In later issues we invite articles on how
Bowtech got started in your country and your goals for the future.
Extreme weather conditions, cyclones, super typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines, floods in England, fires in
Australia, tornados and freezing temperatures in America, homes and lives lost, leave a huge trail of grief with
physically and emotionally scarred folk. So many left homeless and so many traumatised from unemployment.
What can we say? …This is life, maybe. However shining like a beacon through many of these tragedies where
possible, the Bowen practitioner may offer a helping hand with Bowen procedures, compassion, encouragement
and support.
The stories in this issue show what Bowen is all about, how unfortunate people can be helped.
Every community and country has special needs for Bowenwork. Every age group, the very old, the very young,
the sufferers from natural disasters, all may benefit from Bowen.
Once again the magic of Bowen can lend a helping hand. In just one precious hour they can feel relaxed,
rejuvenated and ready to go on. Their overused muscles can be softened, their exhaustion eased and their energy
restored. Best of all, however, is a compassionate ear, a pleasant conversation which often is sadly lacking because
of their isolation. Thanks Anne.
WELCOME
Our special thanks to our instructors from around the globe who conscientously train our new instructors.
We warmly welcome to our family of instructors Tara “Cobalt” Coy from Portland
Oregon USA, Rita Azeredo from Portugal and Carmen Sopon from Romania.
Finally, be ye all of one
We wish this trio of talented instructors every success and enjoyment in bringing mind, having compassion

Reaching Out
With Bowen
My family is from Tacloban City, Leyte, Philippines. Our area is among the
strongest hit by Super Typhoon Haiyan or locally known as Yolanda last November
8, Friday. At 4am it started to rain in Tacloban. We could feel the 380kph wrath of Haiyan
from 7:30am to 8:30am with super strong winds, heavy rain. It was like we were inside a top speed
washing machine. It went on and on and on with zero visibility slamming, blowing roofs off/away, breaking
window glasses, flattening houses and vertical structures, cars on the road thrown into farmlands etc. Our place
is located far from coastal area, we did not experience the storm surge that hit coastal areas where water reached
as high as 30ft, 18ft, 12ft depending on the area. By 11am the storm and strong winds has subsided and went on
damaging other areas in Leyte and the rest of Visayas.
Bowen is amazing. We are a big family and household. I was able to Bowen all the family members at home
including everyone who came by our place after the typhoon, ranging from a one year old baby to a ninety year
old grandfather. I mainly did the “Reset Button” on them standing up or sitting down and they said it gave them
tremendous relief from the typhoon and storm surge trauma the next day.
Surprisingly after the ‘Reset Button’ on each of the seven kids none of them at home looked severly traumatized
or experienced shock. After that awful typhoon, I could see them smiling and playing with each other a few hours
later and in the days that followed as if nothing had happened. The adults at home didn’t appear to be gazing into
the air as well, unlike those who came by our place without Bowen on them yet.
On day two, morning it was still raining. Rainwater found its way inside our house through the broken ceiling
and broken glass walls. I fell on the slippery wet stairs and hurt my right elbow really badly. I was protecting my
head from impact. Good thing I’ve reached Bowen Level 2 with you Ms. Rita. I was able to Bowen my elbow. The
‘Reset Button’ I tried to do to myself but with no big effect. I had to teach one at home the ‘Reset Button’ so he
could perform it on me. Right after he did the ‘Reset Button’ on me, I immediately felt a blood rush to my elbow
and in minutes there was no more pain.
There was swelling, now a week after all there is only a mark where I hit my elbow and no more swelling. On a
scale of 0 to 10 the pain was only 5. The effect of Bowen on me was instant..
Five kids - ages 4-10. Respiratory procedure due to asthma. Did not reach major asthma attack with mediacation
maintenance. We can’t afford kids to have asthma attack since no electricity for nebulizer and no hospitals
Page
operating in the area. Two babies - Baby Bowen ceaseless crying and coughing.
Can sleep better already, continuous sleep. No trauma.
One adult - respiratory procedure severe coughing, trauma from storm surge.
Relief from storm surge trauma. Coughing continued even after Bowen but
minimized coughing interval.
One adult - respiratory and pelvic procedures. Coughing and tired legs from
walking minimum 22,000 steps per day. All roads were full of debris and fallen
electric posts. Great relief from painful and tired legs after two days.
One adult - respiratory, pelvic, ankle head/neck procedure. Can’t sleep
for two days. Trauma, stiff neck, sprained foot, occasional coughing. Fell
asleep right after Bowen. Big overall body relief. When I asked him if
there was blood rush in any part of his body, his answer was a long sigh of
“Everrryyywhheerrrreee...”
One adult - ‘Reset Button’, lower back procedure. Chronic lower back pain for years already, severe trauma,
painful feet from walking thousands of step before reaching our house. Was able sleep on his back that night after
Bowen. Asked for more Bowen the next day for his knees and foot. Immediate relief. Left our home with lesser
trauma. He experienced storm surge 12ft, was home alone when typhoon struck.
Thirty plus adults who came by our home to get food/water. Performed ‘Reset Button’. Felt better, breathing
normal before leaving again.
Rita, I wish I could have stayed further in Tacloban to continue Bowen on others. In a span of two days before
leaving my severly devastated and chaotic hometown Bowen kept me busy day and night. Everyone I did ‘Reset
Button’ including our family, drivers, household help, guards, employees and their families who came by for food
and water. It was mainly for security reasons that made us leave and the need to contact other family members in
Manila and London who for sure were already worried not any hearing news within 72 hours.
Should peace and order be restored in the city, I will go back to Tacloban and do more Bowen on them.
Thank you again Rita for everything. I will continue learning Bowen and doing it for other people.
This is all I can share with you all for now.
To all of you, please continue doing Bowen for others.
Best regards,
Zarah Mercado

Lance had been a Thalidomide victim and as a consequence his entire life had been “dogged” with pain, anger,
ridicule. (He was born with a distorted face, no ears and no gall bladder) As a consequence he experiences
feelings of a complete lack of self worth. (Both kids and teachers made his life a misery)
Now a new situation has arisen for all those affected by Thalidomide: their bodies are deteriorating. Many
have had to use their bodies with contorted actions: feeding themselves with their feet, twisting their bodies to
manipulate their armless hands to do all these actions we take for granted – eating, drinking, brushing our hair
and teeth, and toileting. Can you imagine a life spent being stared at laughed at, teased, bullied and lonely?
It is only since 2008 that they have all connected as a group to join with one another in compassionate friendship
and support.
Lance is now the President of the Australian Thalidomide Association and he and his lovely pro-active wife are
leading the vanguard for recognition and compensation from the Drug Company involved and the Australian
Government.
Just last week he stood before me looking crestfallen with shoulders drooping as he entreated “Save me! I just
want to run away”.
The magnificent Bowen Technique flowed through his aching body, soothing, relaxing, restoring. Nothing fancy:

A new man came through the door on his second visit one week later, walking easily, smiling and relaxed.

Kiara is 20 years old and her Mum made an appointment to see if Bowen Therapy could help with her very painful
wrist and ankle. She is a super keen Special Olympics swimmer in both butterfly and freestyle and her wrist and
ankle injuries had been distressing her.
At first she was very nervous but I told her how I would play computer games on her body to make her arms and
legs go faster, with a big smile she agreed.
After each set of moves I sat nearby (rather than leaving the room) as a
reassurance for her and completed the session with the Ankle and Elbow-Wrist
Procedures. The Elbow-Wrist thrust gave her a fit of the giggles as she tried to
copy my demonstration doing it over and over.
Several days later when her mother came for her own Bowen Session she was
ecstatic! Kiara had swum and impressive P.B (personal best) with not one
mention of a sore ankle or wrist. Since that time she has continued improving
and has just come for her next “computer game” session in preparation for a big
carnival in Sydney next week. I had to make sure to finish with the Elbow-Wrist
Procedure, so she could do the thrust, to make her arms go faster.
Having the privilege to work with clients with special needs has been a constant
reminder of the enormous potential of the Bowen Technique. Many of these
people, young or old, cannot understand or articulate their needs and still
miracles large and small are achieved.
It may be that their spasticity is eased, their breathing is improved, their bowels
work more effectively or their rigid arms, hands or legs can move more freely.

Since I became a therapist in 2007, every single patient has translated into the joy of
helping to solve a problem for someone, gaining experience and growing enthusiasm
for the Bowen therapy.
I was the first ‘national’ therapist in Portugal and I’ve always wanted to help spread
Tom Bowen’s original technique. I think I accomplished this by organising many
courses, surrounding myself with a growing number of colleagues and establishing
the Portuguese Bowen Association (APTBowen). Growth has been slow but steady,
resulting in a now credible association that has conquered its legitimate space in the therapy landscape here in
Portugal.
Trevor Griffiths and John Wilks have helped channel my intentions in the right direction, so the process of
becoming a teacher has ended up giving me far more than just another diploma, but rather a whole new insight.
I still have much to learn, but the experience of teaching new courses will definitely help me to perpetuate the
wonderful work Ossie and Elaine have brought to the world over many years.
Carmen Sopon
The Original Bowen Technique
Bucharest, Romania
I am Carmen Sopon and I live in Bucharest, Romania. Ever since I first heard about this
“miraculous” therapy, watching a documentary with Ossie and Elaine Rentsch on TV, in
2002, I felt, deep in my soul, it was a technique I needed to learn more about.
I ended up organizing Bowen courses in Romania and from that moment on, my entire
life has changed. I was very lucky to have Andrew Zoppos as a teacher and mentor,
whose passion and dedication for the Bowen technique are contagious.
I became a Bowen practitioner and soon I realized there is no bigger satisfaction than being able to help fellow
humans (and animals, for that matter) getting over their sufferance. I was honored to be accredited as a Bowtech
instructor and I really feel my soul has found its true mission in this life
Becoming a Bowenwork Instructor presents an opportunity for me to empower future practitioners with the gift
of self-correction for the people they touch. What a powerful ripple of positive change! I’m honored to be on this
journey with you all.
Page 12
The Art of Helping with Bowen........ As instructors
we are always asked about how to approach a case. And I always answer with what was passed down to me from
Ossie and Elaine: There are three ways.
1. Treat the Area of concern.
2. Treat with prerequisite BRMs and the Area of concern. or
3. Treat with the BRMs or if flux, as much of it as the body allows.
This brilliant synopsis, highlights the effectiveness of the Bowen technique in addressing a tremendous amount of
challenges and pathologies that we see.
If it is focal and acute consider no. 1. Treat it directly, as the issue is contained and localized. If it is focal but, has
lasted for a period of time, associate organs or structural compensations have set in so then consider no. 2. And if
the body is attempting to use the totality of its systems to resolve, then consider no. 3.
The elegance of Bowen is that we can respond in kind to assist in any stage, in any illness.
Empty the cup, and respond appropriately.

Hello Farida,
I would like to thank you for including me in this course and saying what a pleasure
it was to meet you. I am left with a state of awe around the work and how it affects us
energetically. Farida Irani
I also felt rejuvenated and rested when I got home which is unusal for me after a course.
Normally, I would feel tired and drained. The space that you create energetically when you teach is unusual and
thoroughly appreciated.
I had a wonderful experience during the meditation as well, so thank you, and I hope to see
you again in the Bowen world in future.

After almost 30 years living in Australia, Instructor Anne
Winter decided to bring ancient wisdom over to Europe in
combination with Bowen Therapy. Together with her husband
David she taught her post-graduate seminar ‘Energy, Vibration
and Bowen’ in Austria in her German mother tongue.
The two day course was very well received by the intuitive
practitioners of Linz and Mattsee, who found the subject not
only exciting but also enhancing their awareness to experience
the vibrational aspect of Bowenwork and its unique (w)holistic
impact on the physiological, psychological and energetic aspect.

BOWEN ASSOCIATION
OF
IRELAND
On the 14th December, the Bowen Association of Ireland organised an AGM, Training Day and Christmas Party
at the Ashdown Park Hotel in Gorey. This picture is of a few guests at the Christmas party.
It was an excellent day. Participants were very impressed and appreciative of the quality of the inputs on the day
and the information delivered. The title given to the Training Day was, ‘Empowering You to Earn More Money
with Bowen in 2014!’ and was organised by the BAI committee.
An expert panel was organised in the morning, with inputs from Dave Howick, accountant, Philip Cullen, financial
advisor and Alan Kelly, business mentor. Lisa Stacey, web designer, had to send her apologies due to illness. An
informative question and answers period followed their valuable 10-mins presentations.
Instructor Suzette O’Leary was then asked to give an input on effectively choosing Bowen procedures for
treatments, and Instructor Shalini Sinha completed the day with a talk on the Skills of
Communication and Fostering a Positive Mindset in Building your Bowen Practice.
The group enjoyed their lunch together and continued to build supportive relationships with
each other – a strong value of the Bowen Association of Ireland.
The day finished with beautiful 4-course meal Christmas party, music and some enjoyed a
peaceful night’s stay in the hotel before the journey home.
The Sedona Chamber of Commerce announced that more than 2,600 people registered for the Sedona Marathon,
Half Marathon, 10K and 5K!
Supported by his wife Theresa, 3 of his 5 daughters, a sister and brother-in-law along with his Bowenwork
practitioner Teresa Peterson administering Sports Bowen off track he started the run in great spirits. He returned to
the starting gate 2 hrs-5 min- 4 seconds later and then waited for the posting of the results.
Butch started running only one and a half years ago. He said it was very painful just running a 100 yards at that
time. A few months ago a family friend introduced the Weisenbeck’s to Teresa and Bowenwork in Flagstaff, AZ.
He said, “that is when things started looking up.”
Butch commented on Monday after the run, “Bowenwork helped me to recover quicker and relieved pain in my
knees and back as I trained and the day after the run I felt good with no after effects or pain. Bowen definitely gave
me the edge to run with no pain and to run faster.”
Butch now has the results from the marathon and found that out of the total 792 half marathon participants he
placed 215th and of all male participants 116th. The runner in his category coming in second followed a good 6
minutes behind and completed the run in 2 hrs-11 min.- 24 sec. so he is 266th overall.
Running events for the future are in the planning and his family looks forward to more great runs for grandpa
Butch.

EMRT™® CMRT™®
The official & original Bowen on animals
Endorsed by the BTAA
www.emrt.net.au emrt.ali@bigpond.com Ph: +61 0418 455 801
Our Human classes are often carried out in the open air where the
animals can watch as we learn how to balance the body of the rider;
Before any work is carried out on animals, the students learn about
feel and timing in the body, when and how to perform the moves
– they have to practice on a teacher before they are let loose on the
animals!
Raquel and Bron (pictured right) work on a grateful working dog.
It is lovely how the animals always thank you for helping them.
The responses in the animals is always joyful to see.
As we had a 6 day class and with qualified EMRT® practitioners at
hand we used this wonderful opportunity to document the
changes with the Equus College Research Equipment to show the changes in the animal both 4 and 2 legged.
For further enquiries and details Equus College has developed research based on
of EMRT 2014 and 2015 dates and measuring the electric body science and theory using
courses please contact Ali Goward on Digital Frequency Counter.
email: emrt.ali@bigpond.com or any For information on this amazing work please contact Ali
