GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Write the corresponding correct answer on the answer sheet provided. Write only the letter corresponding
to your answer.
2. A specific amount of time will be given for you to answer each subject. DO NOT PROCEED to the next
subject unless the time for the first subject has pass up. Remember that in the actual UPCAT, the proctors
are very strict about the time. You can’t move on or go back between the subjects. For example, you’re
currently on the Science part. You finished early and you still have 15 minutes during the Science part.
You can’t go back on your Language Proficiency or start early for the Reading Comprehension. The time
allotment for each subject must be followed strictly or the proctor will capture your test paper and answer
sheet.
3. Strictly No Cheating! This mock examination may be conducted online, and you may think to search for
the answers on the internet. But keep in mind that this examination is done to test your aptitude regarding
the test and it helps you prepare what to expect for the actual UPCAT. It also helps you figure out how
time runs by during an examination and helps you do your own time management. So answer as honest as
possible. Remember that if you cheat on this test, you are only cheating yourself.
4. Submit your answers sheet on your designated Proctor. You may check your proctor on the roster list
posted on the group.

Multiple Choice: Choose the letter of the correct answer. All answers must be provided on the answer
sheet.
After gaining its independence from France in 1953, Cambodia, like many other newly independent
countries, had to face the new escalating global problem of the time: the Cold War. As far as Cambodia
was concerned, the effects of the Cold War were discernible from the outset, with the formation of the
Indochinese Communist Party in 1951 in Vietnam and its influence on the communist movement in
Cambodia. However, it was not ideological conflict alone that accounted for the destruction of Cambodia
in the following decades. Michael Leifer, for instance, notes: “Ever since the decline of the ancient
Khmer Empire, geography has combined with politics to shape the fortunes of the Cambodian state.”
Similarly, British journalist William Shawcross also writes: “Cambodia is a victim of its geography and
of its political underdevelopment.”
- From the The Geopolitics of Cambodia During the Cold War Period by Sok Udom Deth, Ohio
University

The victory of the small Greek democracy of Athens over the mighty Persian empire in 490 B. C. is one
of the most famous events in history. Darius, king of the Persian empire, was furious because Athens had
interceded for the other Greek city-states in revolt against Persian domination. In anger the king sent an
enormous army to defeat Athens. He thought it would take drastic steps to pacify the rebellious part of the
empire. Persia was ruled by one man.
In Athens, however, all citizens helped to rule. Ennobled by this participation, Athenians were prepared
to die for their city-state. Perhaps this was the secret of the remarkable victory at Marathon, which freed
them from Persian rule. On their way to Marathon, the Persians tried to fool some Greek city-states by
claiming to have come in peace. The frightened citizens of Delos refused to believe this. Not wanting to
abet the conquest of Greece, they fled from their city and did not return until the Persians had left. They
were wise, for the Persians next conquered the city of Etria and captured its people.
Tiny Athens stood alone against Persia. The Athenian people went to their sanctuaries. There they prayed
for deliverance. They asked their gods to expedite their victory. The Athenians refurbished their weapons
and moved to the plain of Marathon, where their little band would meet the Persians. At the last moment,
soldiers from Plataea reinforced the Athenian troops.
The Athenian army attacked, and Greek citizens fought bravely. The power of the mighty Persians was
offset by the love that the Athenians had for their city. Athenians defeated the Persians in archery and
hand combat. Greek soldiers seized Persian ships and burned them, and the Persians fled in terror.
Herodotus, a famous historian, reports that 6400 Persians died, compared with only 192 Athenians

Keeping tropical fish at home or in your office used to be very popular. Today, interest has declined, but
it remains as rewarding and relaxing a hobby as ever. Ask any tropical fish hobbyist, and you will hear
how soothing and relaxing watching colorful fish live their lives in the aquarium.
If you are considering keeping tropical fish as pets, here is a list of the basic equipment you will need. A
filter is essential for keeping your aquarium clean and your fish alive and healthy. There are different
types and sizes of
filters and the right size for you depends on the size of the aquarium and the level of stocking. Generally,
you need a filter with a 3 to 5 times turnover rate per hour. This means that the water in the tank should
go through the filter about 3 to 5 times per hour.
Most tropical fish do well in water temperatures ranging be tween 240 C and 260 C, though each has its
own ideal water temperature. A heater with a thermostat is necessary to regulate the water temperature.
Some heaters are submersible and others are not, so check carefully before you buy.
Lights are also necessary, and come in a large variety of types, strengths and sizes. A light source is
necessary for plants in the tank to photosynthesize and give the tank a more attractive appearance. Even if
you plan to use plastic plants, the fish still require light, although here you can use a lower strength light
source.
A hood is necessary to keep dust, dirt and unwanted materials out of the tank. Sometimes the hood can
also help prevent evaporation. Another requirement is aquarium gravel. This will improve the aesthetics
of the aquarium and is necessary if you plan to have real plants.
14. What is the general tone of this article?
a. Informal
b. Formal
c. Technical
d. Opinion
16. What evidence does the author provide to support their claim that aquarium lights are necessary?
a. Plants require light
b. Fish and Plants Require Light
c. The author does not provide evidence for the statement
d. Aquarium lights make the aquarium more attractive

In 1689, Cotton Mather, minister of the Old Church in Boston, published an account of supposed
witchcraft that occurred the previous year involving an Irish washerwoman named Glover. Mather’s
publication entitled “Memorable Providences, Relating to Witchcrafts and Possessions”, included a
description of the signs of witchcraft. Owing in part to the minister’s status and reputation, his
commentary was widely circulated and discussed throughout Puritan New England. Samuel Parris, the
Salem minister in whose house the events of 1692 were initiated, owned a copy.
For which cause, the night after, she was heard expostulating with a Devil, for his thus deserting her;
telling him that Because he had served her so basely and falsely, she had confessed all. However, to make
all clear, The Court appointed five or six Physicians one evening to examine her very strictly, whether she
were not craz’d in her Intellectuals, and had not procured her self by Folly and Madness the Reputation
of a Witch. Diverse hours did they spend with her; and in all that while no Discourse came from her, but
what was pertinent and agreeable; particularly, when they asked her, What she thought would become of
her soul? she reply’d “You ask me, a very solemn Question, and I cannot well tell what to say to it.” She
own’d her self a Roman Catholick; and could recite her Pater Noster in Latin very readily; but there was
one Clause or two always too hard for her, whAFTERereof she said, “She could not repeat it, if she might
have all the world.” In the up-shot, the Doctors returned her Compos Mentis; and Sentence of Death was
pass’d upon her.

The poetic expressiveness and creativity of Japanese women poets of the Manyoshu era is generally
regarded as a manifestation of the freedom and relatively high political and economic status women of
that era enjoyed. During the Heian period (A.D. 794-1185) which followed, Japanese women became
increasingly relegated to domestic roles under the influence of Buddhism and Confucianism, which
excluded women from the political and economic arenas. Yet, since poetry of the period came to be
defined solely as short lyrical poetry, known as waka, and became the prevailing means of expressing
love, women continued to excel in and play a central role in the development of classical Japanese poetry.
Moreover, while official Japanese documents were written in Chinese, the phoenetic alphabet kana was
used for poetry. Also referred to as onna moji ("women's letters"), kana was not deemed sufficiently
sophisticated for use by Japanese men, who continued to write Chinese poetry, increasingly for
expressing religious ideas and as an intellectual pastime. Chinese poetry ultimately yielded, then, to waka
as the mainstream of Japanese poetry.
22. Based on the passage, mainstream Japanese poetry of the Heian period can best be described as...
a. A cultural outgrowth of Buddhism and Confucianism
b. Philosophical in concern
c. More refined than the poetry of Manyoshu era
d. Sentimental in nature and lyrical style
23. Which of the following statements about kana finds the LEAST support in the passage?
a. It was used in Japan after AD 793
b. It was used for Japanese poetry but not for Japanese prose
c. It was considered inappropriate for austere subject matter

Flappy Bird, a mobile game created in 2013 by Dong Nguyen from Vietnam became a hit at the start of
2014. At the end of January 2014, it was the most downloaded game in the iOS App Store. The game is
extremely addictive and difficult so users strive harder to score higher. Due to its intense popularity, the
creator decided to remove it from the App Store. Because of its millions of downloads, Nguyen claimed
he was making $50,000 per day from it. The demand of Flappy Bird made some gadgets owners to sell
their devices with Flappy Bird installed for twice or thrice their original price.

Before the Civil War, and in particular before February 1936, the Falange had few members and could
not be regarded as a significant political force. In broad terms, it shared political ground with other right-
wing groups in its condemnation of the policies and reforms of the first government of Spain's Second
Republic. The regionalist aspirations of Catalonia and the Basque Country, the politicisation of the
working classes through the existence of marxist and anarcho-syndicalist trades unions, and the
legislation which gave political and social freedoms to women were among the developments which were
perceived as threatening the established order. Criticisms such as these were common to opponents of the
Republic, but the Falange went further through its ideological analysis of Spain as a nation divided and
having lost national pride and former greatness. Following the rhetoric of the philosopher Jose Ortega y
Gasset, who in 1922 had talked of 'the serious illness from which Spain is suffering', the Falange
constructed an ideological alternative to parliamentary democracy. The totalitarian system it advocated
would end the 'disunity' caused by regionalism, political parties and the class struggle.
- From The Yoke of Isabella: The Women’s Section of the Spanish Falange 1934-1959
27. What was the ideological analysis of Spain?

University of Chicago

Passage 2, Mula sa “Ang Wika bilang Instrumento ng Pambansang Pagpapalaya” ni Randy David
(1988)
Faculty Center Conference Hall)

and retail trade, at pagbabangko.
a. OFW remittances
b. Investment mula sa mga dayuhan
c. BPO industry
d. Lokal na negosyo at pagawaan
c. Parehong a at b
d. Wala sa nabanggit
44. Ano ang pangunahing isinasaad ng teksto?
a. Mga salik sa kalagayan ng ekonomiya

Rafael.
