A. READING COMPREHENSION
Read the passage carefully. Then decide which of the following options is best. Only one option in
each question reflects exactly the meaning of the text.

Famous radio DJ Tony Blackburn thinks that loneliness is no respecter of persons, and that being in the
public eye can make you feel extremely isolated.
‘I’m sure a lot of people in the media are terribly lonely if they will only admit it,’ he said. ‘That’s why
you see them in pubs and wine bars, because they have nowhere else to go. They turn to drink to escape
the feeling. Being famous is like being extremely beautiful, in that it makes you seem unapproachable.’
‘It can be very difficult for someone like me to go into a pub, for instance. People stare, and come over
and ask for an autograph, which is very nice and flattering, but the assumption is always: “What on earth
is he doing here?”. Initially it is very easy to meet people, but it is always very superficial, and they are
always the same kind of people.’
‘I have suffered very badly from loneliness in the past because I was very ambitious as well as shy.
Eventually, however, you can begin to enjoy loneliness and stop feeling sorry for yourself. I feel you
can’t have everything!’.
Adapted from: John Nicholson and Jill Eckersley, ‘The Loneliness
