What is/are
1. Thermodynamics?
It is a study by which it explains the relationships between heat, work,
temperature and energy. Another explanation is, how energy is being transferred
between these components
2. Thermal Energy?
Thermal energy can be defined into many things, but for the context of this
subject. It is the Energy that is coming from the temperature.
3. 3 Laws of Thermodynamics?
First Law - It is impossible to generate or destroy energy, according to the First Law of
Thermodynamics. The First Law of Thermodynamics is a statement that energy can be
exchanged between a system and its surroundings by the transfer of heat (q) or by the
performance of mechanical work. Alternatively, some sum it up as "the conservation of
energy" (w). Formula: ΔE = q + w
Second Law - An isolated system that is out of equilibrium would often experience an
increase in entropy over time, eventually reaching a maximum value.
Third Law - There are various ways to structure this law. If one could achieve absolute
zero, all bodies would have the same entropy, according to the most basic law. In other
words, there is only one potential state for a body at absolute zero, and that state has a
distinct energy that is known as the zero-point energy. Entropy in this condition is
equal to zero.
Who are the people behind these names?
1) Joule
James Prescott Joule- English physicist who established that the various forms of
energy, mechanical, electrical, and heat are basically the same and can be changed one
into another.
2) Newton
Sir Isaac Newton - English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, alchemist, theologian,
and author. He was one of the Greatest physicists and mathematicians.
3) Pascal
Blaise Pascal- Pioneer in the natural and applied sciences
4) C. P. Snow
Charles Percy Snow, Baron Snow Of The City Of Leicester - “The English novelist and
physicist Charles Percy Snow (1905-1972) wrote "Strangers and Brothers," a series of novels
depicting the professional and intellectual classes and detailing the struggles involved in
the pursuit of ambition and the exercise of power.”
5) Brayton cycle
George Brayton - The first two stroke engine with continuous ignition was created by
engineer George Brayton and marketed under the name "Brayton's Ready Motors."
6) Otto cycle
Nikolaus Otto - He is recognized as the first person to develop an internal combustion
engine that runs on petroleum fuel and has a four-stroke cycle.
7) Boyle's law
Robert Boyle - the one who came up with the renowned Boyle's law, which states that a
gas's volume decreases as its pressure rises and vice versa. He was a strong supporter of
the experimental method and a notable scientist and thinker of his time.
8) Charles' law
Jacques Charles - Charles's Law, also referred to as the law of volumes, is an
experimental gas law that explains how gasses tend to expand when heated. Joseph
Louis Gay-Lussac, a French natural philosopher, published it for the first time in 1802,
however he credited Jacques Charles' unpublished work from the 1780s with making the
discovery.
