LESSON 2: ELEMENTS OF DANCE


OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:


a. Identify the elements of dance.
b. Apply these elements in creating dance choreography
c. Realize the importance of the elements of dance on choreography and performance.

HOOK
Let us start the lesson with an opening prayer.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Holy Lord, thank you for grace. Please help me move beyond the hurdles
that trip me up and give me the strength and wisdom to look up and see
the hope I run toward in Christ.
In Jesus name, Amen.

To begin with elements of dance, do the following activities.


ACTIVITY 1

Under “Activity”, list down five activities which are part of your required daily routine. Be as specific as
possible. Under those five, list another five activities which are not part of your daily routine and that you
choose to do and in the ‘Place” table, list down the description where your activities occur.

Answer the following question. You can use the back of this paper in explaining the given questions. Write
the activity number.
1. Are your required activities mostly active or passive? Why?
2. Do you consider yourself active or passive person? Why?
3. Do you consider yourself a small-space or large-space person? Why?
4. Do you prefer long-term or short-term activities? Explain your answer.

The beginning activity uses your prior knowledge to bring you to the elements of dance in relation to
your everyday activities.
To provide you the necessary information about the elements of dance, read and understand the lesson
on page 9 to 10 of your textbook.
After you understand the elements of dance do the next activity.

1. Observe how your chest expand as you breathe. How the space you occupy changes?

2. Change your posture by sitting back, crossing your legs, or lowering your head.
Answer the following questions.
a. How much time passed during that shift?
b. Can you perform the same shift more quickly or more slowly?
c. How much effort did you use to execute the shifting?
d. Did you use your neck muscles to hold up your head, or are you supporting your heads with your
hands, arms and back muscles?

ACTIVITY 3

The movements have propelled by energy or force. Dances uses different energy and varied use of these
minimizes the monotony of the movements in a performance. List down the six qualities of dance energies
presented and describe each energy. You can use the back of this paper or a separate sheet of paper. Write the
activity number.
