5 Basic water
As described above, basic water must be of a certain quality. In particular, the water must not be too
hard. Hardness-causing substances in the water can react with coolant additives and lead to deposit
formation. Deposits in the cooling circuit can drastically reduce heat transfer from the components to be
cooled to the coolant, which again can result in overheating and engine damage.
Basic water must correspond to the values specified in the table below. Such water quality can for
example be achieved by using ion-exchanged water.
Analysis value Unit Permissible range
Appearance - Clear, free of sediment and suspended matter
Odour - Neutral
pH value at 25°C - 6.5 - 9.5
Electrical conductivity µS/cm < 10
Rain water, brackish water or sea water, condensates and normally also tap water do not have the
required properties unless the water is treated appropriately.
Water analysis must be performed with greatest care and accuracy.
6 Selection overview
As described above, there is the possibility to use products with or without frost protection (glycol) or
premixed products or concentrates (mixture with basic water).
Products that are not or not any more listed in this Technical Instruction are not necessarily unsuitable for
Jenbacher Engines. However, the data or control methods necessary to assess their suitability are not
available.
Use of such products is under the operator's own responsibility.
Different products must not be mixed. If a product is changed, the amount remaining in the engine must
be kept as low as possible. Flushing the coolant circuit is recommended.
