Tafsir

Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman as-Sa'di explaining the previous verses says:
Allah informs that those who disbelieve in His signs and bring hardship upon the
Messenger of Allah --had implied and said:

"Why is not a sign sent down to him (Muhammad) from his Lord?" "Why is not a sign sent down to him (Muhammad) from his Lord?" "Why is not a sign sent down to him (Muhammad) from his Lord?" "Why is not a sign sent down to him (Muhammad) from his Lord?"
And by their claim that if the signs were to come they would indeed believe, so Allah
responded to them with His statement:

Meaning, seeking Allah's pleasure; then guidance and misguidance is not governed by
their handsuntil they make that [i.e. their pleasures] be in agreement to Allah's signs.
So because of that they have rejected the signs.

The messenger did not keep bringing forth signs which they would be assisted by
them [i.e. to guidance] and considering them; rather when the messenger came to
them with signs clarifying what he came with is from the truththat will be suffice [for
them] and he had achieved the intended goal.
The prophet is more of a benefit to them than them seeking out the signs which
would assist them to guidance. Verily, had the signs were to come to them they would
have concurred to what the disbelievers had implied; but they didn't believe in the signs
due to their immediate chastisement (disbelief). Afterwards Allah mentions the
distinguishing mark to the believers saying:

Meaning the Dhikrullah [i.e. mentioning Allah] removes from the hearts of the believers'
unrest, anxiety and disarray; bringing their hearts true happiness and delight.

"Verily, "Verily, "Verily, "Verily, in the remembrance of Allh do hearts find rest." in the remembrance of Allh do hearts find rest." in the remembrance of Allh do hearts find rest." in the remembrance of Allh do hearts find rest."

Meaning, the mentioning of Allah is fit to bring gratification to the hearts, sufficient
that nothing else can bring contentment to the hearts (of the believers) except for the
mentioning of Allah. For verily nothing is more delighting to the hearts, desirable and
pleasant than the love of its Creator [i.e. Allah]; having familiarity and awareness of Him
according to the hearts awareness and love of Allah will be the level of hearts mentioning
of Him.
Upon this statement, that the mentioning of Allah is by definition the servant's
remembering of His Lord from making Tasbeeh [i.e. saying Sub'hannallah], Tahleel [i.e.
saying Laa Ilah Illallah], Takbeer [i.e. saying Allahu Akbar] and so forth.
It has been stated: "Indeed the meaning of Dhikrullah is the Qur'an which He had
revealed as Dhikra' [reminder] for the believers". Then based upon that tranquility of
the hearts is done by way Dhikr of Allah; this harmony occurs when the hearts are in
acknowledgment/cognizant of the meanings of the Qur'an, its verdicts and rulings,
resulting in bringing comfort to the hearts.
For verily that tranquility points to the manifested truth, supported by evidences and
proofs, so with that (Dhikr) calms the hearts. Verily the hearts calmness is not soothed
except by Yaqeen and 'Ilm [i.e. certainty and knowledge of the religion] and that is
guaranteed to be found throughout the Book of Allah in a most complete and perfect
fashion.
As for other books besides the Qur'an which do not refer back to the Qur'an,
subsequently the hearts will not be soothed by them; rather the hearts will not cease in
anxiety due to their conflicting proofs opposing to the rulings (of the Qur'an).

This is merely that he will know from the reports of the Book of Allah, pondering on it,
and by contemplating on other than the Qur'an from the various sciencessubsequently
because of that he will verily discover the differences between those sciences and the
Qur'an is a tremendous distinction.
Afterwards Allah says:

Meaning, they have believed with their hearts in Allah, His angels, His Books, His
Messengers, the Last Day; confirming that Emaan [i.e. belief] with righteous deeds.
Deeds done with the heart similar to having love for Allah, fearing Him [i.e. His
punishment], hoping for (His reward) and deeds done with the limbs like the prayer and
similar to that.

Meaning, for them is a wholesome situation and an excellent return, and that with what
they have been granted of Allah's pleasure and hospitality in the Dunya' and the
hereafter; for them is complete comfort and total serenity. In short, the tree Tuba' which
is in paradise, the person will travel in its shade for one hundred years without coming
from (under its shade) as mentioned in authentic narrations.
