Honors Algebra I

I can factor Perfect Square trinomials

I can solve equations involving perfect squares

Starter

Find each product.

1) (3−a)2 2) ( x +5)2 3) (3 x−2 y)2

Factoring Perfect Square Trinomials

 A trinomial that is a square of a Binomial
 Make sure the first and the last terms are Perfect Squares.
 The middle term must be two times the roots of the first and last terms.

2
Example: 16 x + 24 x+ 9

Is the first term a Is the last term a

perfect square? Yes, Is the middle term twice the perfect square? Yes,
because 16 x 2=(4 x )2 product of the square roots of because 9=32.
the first and last term? Yes,
because 24 x=2 (4 x )(3).
Determine if each trinomial is a perfect square trinomial. Write yes or no. If so, factor it. (You can always use
AC method too, but if you can recognize a perfect square trinomial, it saves you a lot of time.)

1) 4 y 2+ 12 y +9 2) 9 x 2−6 x +4 3) 9 y 2 +24 y +16

4) 2 a2 +10 a+25 5) 8 y 2 +24 y +18 6) 9 x 2−6 x−35

Solve each equation. Check your solutions.

7) 9 x 2−48 x=−64 8) a 2+12 a+ 36=0 9) y − y + =0

Square Root Property
To solve a quadratic equation in the form of x 2=n, take the square root of each side.
If x 2=n, then x=± √ n (for any number n ≥ 0)
Example:
2
x =25
√ x 2=√ 25 2
x −25=0
x=± 5 ( x−5 ) ( x +5 )=0
(x +5)=0∨(x−5)=0
±5

14) During an experiment, a ball is dropped from a height of 205 feet. The formula h = -16t2 + h0 can be used to
approximate the number of seconds t it takes for the ball to reach height h from an initial height of h0 in feet.
Find the time it takes the ball to reach the ground.
