UNDERSTAND
Philippine Hazard Map

What is Hazard Map?

Hazard Map is a map that highlights areas that are

affected by or are vulnerable to a particular hazard. They
are typically created for natural hazards, such as
earthquake, volcanoes, landslide, flooding and tsunamis.

Example of Hazard Map in the Philippines

We can see at the

left side an example of
hazard map brought by
Typhoon Glenda dated
July 15, 2014.

Through the map
legend we can identify
the areas that were
affected by typhoon
Glenda.
There were no areas
affected by Signal No.4.

Let must know the uses of the hazard map!

Hazard maps are created and used in conjunction with several natural disasters. For
instance, the hazard map can be useful in detemining the risk of living in a certain area.
Hazard map can also help people become aware of the dangers they might face from
natural disaster such as tropical cyclone, monsoon, flood or ipo-ipo in a specific area. The
use of the hazard map can be through a color coded Warning System for Rainfall and
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal for typhoon. This was given by PAGASA ( Philippine
Atmospheric,Geophysical and Astronomical, Services Administration) to inform the public of
possible flood.Let’s find out below what exactly these warning or wind signals mean.

PAGASA Color Code for Rainfall and Flood Warning System

TROPICAL CYCLONE WIND SIGNALS

Wind Signal Lead Time Winds Impacts of the Winds
(hours) (KPH)
TCWS #1 36 30-60 km/h No damage to very light
damage
TCWS #2 24 61-120 km/h Light to moderate damage
TCWS #3 18 121-170 km/h Moderate to heavy
damage
TCWS #4 12 171-220 km/h Heavy to very heavy
damage
TCWS #5 12 More than Very heavy to widespread
220 km/h damage

What are the areas prone to hazard brought about by tropical cyclone, monsoons,
floods or ipo-ipo?

The areas in the philippines that are prone to hazards brought about by tropical
cyclones, monsoon, and floods or hurricanes are indicated below.

According to a report entitled “Getting a Grip on Climate Change in the

Philippines”from World Bank, there are at least 23 provinces in the Philippines that are
prone to natural calamities. The reason why Philippines is prone to typhoons and other
natural calamities is due to the absence of enough land barriers. The hazard – prone
areas in the Philippines are enumerated below.

SAQ-1: From the table above, can you identify area/s that is/are at very high risk to
rainfall, typhoons, and floods?
SAQ-2: What about area/s that are at very high risk to both typhoon and floods?
SAQ-3: Why do you think these provinces are prone to natural calamities?

Let us Practice using Hazard Map!

Now that we are ready, let us practice using the hazard map. Let us get some example of
the areas that are prone to hazard from the table above.

Directions: Describe the condition of the three provinces (Manila, Pangasinan.and

Western Samar) as illustrated below with their corresponding color code warning signal
brought by rainfall and flood.

 YELLOW warning means “heavy rain are expected, flooding is possible, so

MONITOR weather conditions.”
 ORANGE warning is a sign that, “with intense rains, flooding is threatening , and the
public is advised to be ALERT for possible evacuation.”
 RED warning signal, “torrential rains could cause serious flooding in some areas, so
affected residents must EVACUATE as soon as possible.”
