NO. 5 INTERVIEW

Learner Centered-
Teaching

INTERVIEW GROUP MEMBERS:

Carabido, Lisa Jean

Menchero, Kazelle Ann
Tirao, Ericka
Porley, Lawrince Rey
Saguit, Maria Christine Rose
In this Group activity we choose the no. 2 which is:

With your groupmates, interview at least five teachers (one

from each level – preschool, elementary, high school, college,
or graduate). Ask them to explain their ideas on learner-
centered teaching and how important this is for the learners.
Let them cite examples of strategies or activities they employ
in their teachings that could be considered as inclusive and
learner centered.

Ideas on learner-centered teaching and how important this is for the

learners?

Preschool teacher
-Learner-centered teaching creates a collaborative environment that
students are eager to participate in. Students are encouraged to think
critically about what they're learning and consider how they want to learn
and demonstrate knowledge. This can involve small groups where
students can learn and share knowledge.

It is important because it encourages students to reflect on what they are

learning and how they are learning it. It is teaching that encourages
collaboration, acknowledging the classroom (be it virtual or real) as a
community where everyone shares the learning agenda.

Elementary teacher
-Learner-centered teaching focuses on students' passions and
interests, and also highlights their strengths. This instructional method
moves students away from passive learning and toward active learning.
Active learning entails students talking about learning, sharing strategies,
and helping each other problem solve and learn concepts.empowers
learners to participate actively in the learning process. Unlike more
traditional teacher-centered approaches which focus on the instructor, this
model places the learner at the center of the learning process.
High school teacher
-As a Grade 7 and 9 English teacher focusing on literacy, grammar
skills, and the competencies students need to master, I believe learner-
centered teaching is crucial to student success. It recognizes the diverse
backgrounds, learning styles, and needs of each student, allowing for
personalized and meaningful learning experiences.

One of the most important aspects of learner-centered teaching is its

ability to engage students actively. When students feel involved in the
learning process, they are more motivated, which enhances retention and
application of knowledge.

Collage teacher
-Learner-centered teaching focuses on the needs, abilities, and
interests of diverse students, positioning them at the core of the learning
process. This approach emphasizes active participation, collaboration,
and critical thinking, empowering learners to take ownership of their
education.

It's important because it fosters a sense of autonomy and motivation,

catering to diverse learning styles and needs, making education more
inclusive and effective.

Graduate students
-learner-centered teaching is grounded in the belief that students
learn best when they are actively involved in their education. This
involvement comes from recognizing and catering to their individual
needs, interests, and learning styles. It acknowledges that each student is
unique, and thus, requires a different approach to achieve their fullest
potential.
I experienced handling students and I learned that learner-centered
teaching is grounded in the belief that students learn best when they are
actively involved in their education. This involvement comes from
recognizing and catering to their individual needs, interests, and learning
styles. It acknowledges that each student is unique, and thus, requires a
different approach to achieve their fullest potential. This shift in focus
from a one-size-fits-all approach to a more tailored and responsive model
has profound implications for student success. Sabi nga ni Papa Howard
Gardner meron tayong Multiple intelligences.

As a graduate, I am a visual learner who recognizes the great effect of

learner centered teaching. When I was in my field study and practice
teaching era, differentiation strategies, sasayaw, kakanta, magdadrawing,
dadrama, at iba, magiging talented talaga. But this allows my students to
work at their own pace and develop their skills without feeling
overwhelmed or under-challenged.

Examples of strategies or activities they employ in their teachings

that could be considered as inclusive and learner centered (below):

Preschool teacher

- the strategies that I used is using props to let them know what thing is
that, for example doing games that are connected to shapes, and let them
know. story telling I used puppet to gain their attention and they continue
to listen while telling the story.

Elementary teacher

- These are the strategies to employ in teaching:

 Create a safe learning environment.

 Diversify learning material.
 Taking into account students' needs.
 Make it easy for all students to participate.
 Develop a rapport with each student.

High school teacher

In my classroom, I implement several learner-centered strategies that

promote inclusivity:

 Differentiated Instruction
 Collaborative Group Work
 Student-Centered Discussions
 Peer Teaching and Feedback

1. Differentiated Instruction: I tailor my lessons to meet varying ability

levels. For example, when teaching grammar, I provide more complex
sentence construction exercises for advanced learners while offering more
scaffolded activities for those who need extra support. This ensures that
all students are working at their appropriate level of challenge.
2. Collaborative Group Work: I regularly assign group tasks where
students with different skill sets can learn from each other. For instance,
in a grammar review session, students with stronger grammar skills can
assist peers who might struggle. This not only builds their language
abilities but also fosters cooperation and social-emotional skills.
3. Student-Centered Discussions: I encourage open-ended questions and
class discussions where students can share their thoughts and experiences.
By asking students to connect the themes of a story to their own lives, for
example, I create opportunities for everyone to participate, offering their
unique perspectives.
4. Peer Teaching and Feedback: Students often learn best from each
other, so I incorporate peer teaching exercises. During grammar exercises
or creative writing activities, I ask students to review each other’s work.
This not only allows them to spot errors or identify areas of improvement
but also encourages a deeper understanding of the material by explaining
concepts to their classmates.

Collage teacher

- in English language teaching, I use collaborative storytelling,

where my students can work together to create a story, sharing ideas,
practicing language skills, and supporting each other. Another inclusive
activity I employ is "jigsaw reading," where different groups read
different parts of a text and then teach their sections to peers, promoting
both peer learning and a sense of responsibility. By centering the learning
experience around the students, these activities help build confidence,
communication skills, and a supportive classroom community.

Graduated

- One of the strategies I employ to make my teaching more inclusive and

learner-centered is project-based learning (PBL). I gave my students the
freedom to design their own volcano. This approach not only allowed
students to explore their interests but also encouraged them to apply their
learning in creative and practical ways.
It also provided opportunities for collaboration, as students worked in
groups to brainstorm ideas and execute their projects, thus enhancing
their teamwork and communication skills. As touch holders we are
flexible and multitalented individuals kaya marami tayong pwedeng
gawing paraan upang mas makapagbigay ng kalidad na edukasyon sa
ating mga mag-aaral. Learner-centered teaching is a powerful approach
that prioritizes the needs, interests, and abilities of students. By
incorporating strategies, we, the educators can create a more inclusive
and engaging learning environment that fosters student ownership and
motivation. As a teacher, differented strategies and methods not only
enhance the educational experience for my students but also align with
my commitment to providing a supportive and responsive learning
environment.

Important insights we learned from the interview

Learner-centered teaching is a powerful approach that prioritizes

the needs, interests, and abilities of students. By incorporating strategies,
we, the educators can create a more inclusive and engaging learning
environment that fosters student ownership and motivation. As a future
educators, different strategies and methods not only enhance the
educational experience for our students but also align with our
commitment to providing a supportive and responsive learning
environment. it is always important for teachers as well as the future
educators, to know about current trends and plans for the future. The
learner-centred movement has been in operation within education
institutions for a number of years. It is worth knowing about both the
value and disadvantages of learner centeredness in the classroom. Such as
using the students’ experiences is not possible, if they do not have any
experiences to discuss or share. In short, students will need a teacher
input to be able to engage in a learner centred activity. Also, students will
need to slowly develop their skills in being able to negotiate aspects of
the curriculum. we hope and learned that, through our interview from the
teachers we conduct information about learner centered teaching is
because the information that comes from them helps us, one is to give an
offering to increase our knowledge in learner centered teaching, the other
is that they give strategies so that they can cultivate the youth to their true
potential and to not to be unfair or biased to others, they also pay
attention to the slow leaner children so that no child is left behind. these
messages give us motivation and inspiration because as a future educator
we also need to support and cultivate their talent and intelligence.
