2. What do you know about thesis?

5 minutes

4.3 Analysis The teacher shows statements that should be avoided when writing a thesis statement and
how should it be written instead.

Thesis statements avoid the following:

 the first person (I believe, In my opinion, etc.)
 unclear language (It seems, etc.)
 attempting two topics at once (even if they seem related). Pick one and stick
with it.
 just stating a fact - A thesis is something you plan to make an argument about.
A thesis statement should:
5 minutes ✓ contain a topic (main idea of what you are writing about)
✓ contain an opinion about the topic (what your attitude is toward the topic)
Process in WRITING a THESIS STATEMENT
Step 1: TOPIC. State the topic under consideration. (E.g. cats)
Step 2: ISSUE. State the specific issue in the form of a debating proposition (for
something). The issue usually answers the question “what?” What about cats? (E.g.
Cats should be subject to leash laws.)
Step 3: POSITION + RATIONALE (because clause). Your topic and issue = your
position. Now, using a because-clause, e.g. Cats should be subject to leash laws
because they are natural wanderers.
4.4 Abstraction The teacher discusses the lesson. The learners acquire knowledge regarding the following
points:
 What is the simplest definition thesis statement?
 What are the things to be avoided when writing a thesis statement?
20 minutes  How can you write a proper thesis statement?
4.5 Application
The teacher lets the students answer the following.
In writing a thesis statement, the following must be avoided: (1) too broad, (2)
too wordy, (3) too general, (4) title, and (5) fact. Now, in each set of thesis statement,
identify the better one by putting a check mark (✓) before the letter.

1. A thesis statement should not be too broad.

1a) Good teachers make Mountain City Elementary a fantastic school.
1b) The world is a magnificent place to live in.
2. A thesis statement should not be too wordy.
2a) Some problems with Mountain City Elementary School is that it needs a
larger playground, an air-conditioned gym, an auditorium, restrooms connected
to each classroom, running water in the classrooms, and a number of other
physical changes to the building.
2b) Mountain City Elementary needs several changes to its facility to make it a
10 minutes better school.
3. A thesis statement should not be too general.
3a) Daily writing practice has led to improved writing skills for the students at
Mountain City Elementary.
3b) Mountain City Elementary is a good school.
4. A thesis statement should not be a title.
4a) Cost of Living

75 degrees.
5b) The climate in Mountain City is ideal for outdoor sports.

4.6 Assessment
Read the following paragraphs. Write a topic sentence for each paragraph. When you
5 minutes have completed the topic sentences, write one thesis statement that would be
appropriate for an essay on the same topic.

1. _________________________________________________________________
People with good attitudes tend to be more effective problem solvers, and teamplayers
which are the types of people most employers are looking for. Being able to
see the positive side of a negative situation is a valuable character trait in the
workplace. Positive thinking contributes to more productivity and workplace harmony,
whereas, someone who is negative and complains a lot could affect others with their
negativity and result in less productivity in the workplace, which is why most employers
steer clear of pessimists.

2. _________________________________________________________________
Nothing is more frustrating to an employer than someone who cuts corners or
leaves work incomplete. Employers want to hire people who are not just positive about
doing work, but are willing to put in a bit of extra effort to get the work done. If you can
show an employer that you are willing to break a sweat to get a job done, they will take
you more seriously as a capable candidate for the position you are applying for.

3. _________________________________________________________________
Passion and willingness to work hard can only offer a prospective employer so
much. Unless you can show how your experiences have helped prepare you for the
position you are interviewing for, the employers may decide to go with a candidate
who has completed the appropriate training already. It is costly and time-consuming
to train a new employee, which may make many employers hesitate before hiring lessqualified
applicants.

The teacher asks the students to answer the following on a sheet of paper.

Rewrite the following statements to make the thesis statement clearer that how it is
stated.
1. The government should show concern about mental health.
4.7 Assignment/Agreement
___________________________________________________________________
2. The TLC provides great resources for understanding how to use commas.
___________________________________________________________________
3. Patients like nurses when they are nice.
___________________________________________________________________
4. Dragons can be scary when they breathe fire.
___________________________________________________________________

4.8 Concluding Activity The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons: It
2 minutes gives your writing direction and focus. It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.
