a. Determine an expression for strain energy stored in a body subjected to

b. A 2 m long alloy bar of 1500 mm2 cross-sectional area hangs vertically and
has a collar securely fixed at its lower end. Find the stress induced in the bar,

when a weight of 2 kN falls from a height of 100 mm on the collar. Take E =
120 GPa. Also find the strain energy stored in the bar.
c. Derive an expression for strength of hollow circular shaft when subjected to

shear stress τ.
d. Find out section modulus of hollow circular section of a beam with outer

diameter and inner diameter is D and d, respectively.
e. Find the Euler’s crippling load for a hollow cylindrical steel column of 38
mm external diameter and 2.5 mm thick. Take length of the column as 2.3 m

by Rankine’s formula using constants as 335 MPa and 1/7500.

4. Answer any one of the following. [10×1=10] CO
a. A plane element in a body is subjected to a tensile stress of 100 MPa
accompanied by a shear stress of 25 MPa. Find (i) the normal and shear stress

on a plane inclined at an angle of 20° with the tensile stress and (ii) the
maximum shear stress on the plane.
b. A steel rod ABC is firmly held between two rigid supports A and C as shown
in Fig. Find the stresses developed in the two portions of the rod, when it is
heated through 15 K. Take  = 12 × 10–6 / K and E = 200 GPa.

a. Determine the slope and deflection of simply supported beam of length l

b. A solid shaft of 200 mm diameter has the same cross-sectional area as a

a. A closely-coiled helical spring of round steel wire 5 mm in diameter having

a. A cylindrical shell of 500 mm diameter is required to withstand an internal
pressure of 4 MPa. Find the minimum thickness of the shell, if maximum

tensile strength in the plate material is 400 MPa and efficiency of the joints
is 65%. Take factor of safety as 5.
b. What are the effects on the dimensions of thin cylindrical shell subjected in

internal fluid pressure? Derive an expression for its change in dimensions.
8. Answer any one of the following. [10×1=10] CO
a. A hook carries a load of 7.5 kN and the load line is at a distance of 20 mm
from the inner edge of the section which is trapezoidal. The load line also
passes through the centre of curvature of the hook. The dimensions of the 10 5
central horizontal trapezoidal section are: inner width = 30 mm; outer width
= 15 mm, depth = 30 mm. Calculate the maximum and minimum stresses
