Equations
Problem 5.5 A flow of 2000 cfm of moist outdoor air at 90 F and 70 % RH mixes with a 1000 cfm stream of return air at 65
F and 20 % RH. Determine the temperature, relative humidity, humidity ratio, and enthalpy of the mixed stream for
a. a sea level location
b. a location at 6500 ft above sea level.
c Plot the processes on a psychometric plot and discuss the importance of elevation on the results.
ft3/hr
V̇1 = 2000 · 59.9999996 lbm/hr (1)
cfm
T1 = 90 F (2)
RH 1 = 0.70 (3)
ft3/hr
V̇2 = 1000 · 59.9999996 lbm/hr (4)
cfm
T2 = 65 F (5)
RH 2 = 0.20 (6)
Set up a Parametric Table with the atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, enthalpy, temperatures, and humidity ratios for
the two conditions. Determine the properties of the two air flows
ρ1 = ρ (AirH2O, T = T1 , P = patm , R = RH 1 ) lbm/ft3 (7)
w1 = ω (AirH2O, T = T1 , P = patm , R = RH 1 ) lbm/lbm (8)
h1 = h (AirH2O, T = T1 , P = patm , R = RH 1 ) Btu/lbm (9)
ρ2 = ρ (AirH2O, T = T2 , P = patm , R = RH 2 ) lbm/ft3 (10)
w2 = ω (AirH2O, T = T2 , P = patm , R = RH 2 ) lbm/lbm (11)
h2 = h (AirH2O, T = T2 , P = patm , R = RH 2 ) Btu/lbm (12)
Determine the mass flow rates and the outlet humidity ratio and enthalpy using a mass balance
ṁ1 = V̇1 · ρ1 lbm/hr (13)
ṁ2 = V̇2 · ρ2 lbm/hr (14)
ṁ1 + ṁ2 = ṁ3 lbm/hr (15)
ṁ1 · w1 + ṁ2 · w2 = ṁ3 · w3 lbm/hr (16)
ṁ1 · h1 + ṁ2 · h2 = ṁ3 · h3 Btu/hr (17)
Determine the temperature and mass flow rate of the outlet stream
T3 = T (AirH2O, h = h3 , P = patm , w = w3 ) F (18)
RH 3 = φ (AirH2O, h = h3 , P = patm , w = w3 ) (19)
The temperature of the outlet stream is the same for both elevations but the humidity ratio and enthalpy are significantly
different. The relative humidity is about the same
Using the sealevel psychrometric chart for the higher elevation would yield significant errors.
The differences arise from the much higher humidity ratio at the inlet conditions for the higher elevation
